ok boys and girls, i'm looking into buying a 12 guage... any suggestions?
not looking to spend more than 3 or 4 hundred.

my buddy has an 870 express but i have read mixed reviews online about their machining not being quite as good as the wingmaster and causing some reloading issues.

just curious if there are any other guns i should be looking at in that price range?
experiences with 870 expresses?

New 870s are definitely worse than older 870s.

Mossy 500s/590s are still good new.

What do you want to use it for? Hunting? Defense? 3 gun?

I dont hunt at all myself, but my girlfriends family has a a couple hundred acres in southeast ohio so it's definitely not out of the picture entirely. at some point i may go out and try to get a deer.

at this point i mainly want one to shoot clays with, maybe mess around and shoot rabbits around home.
lost your job? keep buying foreign.

I might also mention that my freinds 870 was jamming but the guy using it might have just been short stroking. You want a pump or semi? Out of your price range but I have heard great things about Benelli's 'SuperNovas' but come in at about $500..I am very happy with my mossberg 590a1, the 500/590 are a bit cheeper then the a1.

On a side note: I noticed on some of my Remington slugs that the slug is loose inside the hull...is this safe to shoot? I assume it is but just want to be sure..

i have an interstate arms / hawk/ norinco 982 12g pump and i love it. its a Chinese copy of the 870 but from what i have seen they are higher quality than the new 870s. i picked it over the mossberg because it came with ghost ring sights and the safety isn't in a retarded location like the 500. never had a single issue with it. the only thing ive done is strip it and clean out the factory "lube" and re lube it with frog lube its super smooth now.

Funny thing you mention the safety as I hate cross bolt safeties like in the 870 design.

I agree that the new 870 clones are nicer than actual 870's, although many of them are heavy as shit.

gnar_rider:

Look for something with a full length barrel with a vent rib if you plan to shoot clays, any of the defense guns with ghost ring sights will be shit for that purpose.

There is a basic Mossberg 500 combo with a 28" vent rib barrel and a shorter defense or deer barrel for a good price.

Or their equivalent versions with synthetic stock and foregrip, though I like the feel of wood furniture over plastic myself.
