I've also heard of more and more Kimbers being junk out of he box and requiring multiple trips back to the factory, with each return being a complete hassle.

wow, good to know.  I dont believe i have ever known anyone that personally had a kimber.  they just seemed like nice guns.

im seriously looking to get a S&W M&P compact in either 9mm or .40. is there anything else i should look at before i buy one?

I've put almost 1000rds through my FS M&P.  I love it, feels better than the glocks I've shot. I'd say do it.

Majority of Kimber issues can be traced to the magazines. 1911's in general are picky about magazines but Kimber's moreso than most.

Friend of mine just got one, mags were all shit. Swapped to Wilson mags and helped but the slide release was also causing feeding issues. CS was decent. Its a known issue so they sent him new parts at no charge without asking for originals to be returned.
