It definitely wasnt the seatpost guts. I slathered the post in grease, put it back in the frame but it still creaked. A bit of bedtime googling told me that regular grease and carbon is a big no no because it can make it swell. In the morning I checked it and the creakiness has gone. Took it out and wiped off all the grease and did the same to the frame. The creak was still gone. Hurrah!

Tl;Dr
It creaked, I greased it, it doesn't creak.

Stopped to check everything over while doing a loop of sherwood pines this morning.

Rides really well, although the forks could do with an oil change I think so that will be on the cards when I get back from Sweden in a couple of weeks. Off to Cannock on Friday as well.

The "carbon gripper" stuff? That is fine to have in there. It has little bits of something in there so you don't have to torque the parts as much and they will still grip. My Chinese post that came with the frame had some texture on it already, though, you would be able to get away without using the paste if yours is the same.

In Estaing now. Weather is superb. 20 degrees every day.

Smashed the climb to Conques yesterday. As an Irishman I'm not too used to this heat yet. Maybe I'm fucked for Italy in the summertime lol.

Fucking stoked I see fighter jets tearing through the valleys every day here. Defiantly a treat for me.

Threw up a few more pics on Instagram if anyone's interested. @hugh356

Yeah the post did have the grippy stuff but I figured I was meant to use the carbon gripper anyway..

Last pic of my mtb in working mode (actually had a flat for this picture). Had the chain/derraileur/hanger snap off the other day to my luck.

Speaking of snakes I ran over one on the hard shoulder today and the wheel threw him up onto the pedals/my bare legs.

I fucking hate snakes. Stopped about 500m up the road and nearly cried. Fuck snakes.

Obligatory Australian comment about you and your pussy encounter with a pussy snake because it isn't an Australian fuck you up (but will leave you alone if you don't try to hurt it or some stupid shit) venomous snake.
