The Bike Shop / hardtail mountain bikes
« on: November 26, 2014, 08:37:41 AM »
I don't ride BMX anymore. sorry. I have been doing everything else that's possible with a bicycle lately though.

I ride a "small" custom built Surly Karate Monkey 29er (1x9 gearing, 80mm squish fork, giant tires) even though most would say I should be on a size up for my height. maybe I prefer the smaller frame from years of riding little bikes. I find that I avoid a lot of the really "interesting" trails around here. the terrain has lots of gnarly exposed rock with some steep descents and drops and I hesitate to even go near that stuff. I have taken some of it a few times, but usually because someone led me out there and I could not find my way back home by myself.

so I want a bike that's more confidence-inspiring and I think all the marketing hype around 650B wheels is getting in my head. FS bike is not in the budget, so if I wanted a more capable HT, what have you bmx-gone-mtb guys experienced on 29"/27.5" tire-ed bikes?

The Bike Shop / Re: Frame History?

1. ancient 1980s Schwinn Predator that I pulled out of the trash circa 1993. Skyway Mags!
2. random crappy garage sale Diamondback with a standing platform. this was my "street bike" because my Predator was my flatland bike.
3. Morales flatland- trans green with a Kore fork, Graveyard bars and sprocket, etc. I saw it last night as a friend owns it now.
4. S&M Sabbath- combined street and flatland bikes into one bike. GFR Redneck, Castillo bars, T1 sprocket, 3/16" chain, etc. I miss that Sabbath!
5. Trek Subvert 3.0. wanted a street-er bike than my Sabbath. meh, gave it to a friend eventually.
6. Dirt Bros Trailer Park- gave up on flatland and just rode street after this.
7. Kink Freebird- rode this once and didn't like it.
8. MacNeil Ruben- raddest frame ever. cut off the gyro tabs and cut down the dropouts.
9. Integral Expo- bought this cheap and thought it would be better than the Ruben. meh.
10. Simple Debut- great sale on Sidewall. most modern bike I ever owned. sold it while in ATL to buy mtb stuff because bmx in ATL was boring.
11. Premium street frame from 2003 or so. just bought this to get back into it after a two-year break.

indication of how frugal I am- the only of those frames I ever paid full retail was the Morales ($200 new) and the Trailer Park, and that was $200 straight from Dirt Bros. the Sabbath was purchased at my first bike shop job around 1998, the Integral was technically new but super cheap from someone on BG, and the Simple was a NOS closeout on Sidewall. Everything else was used and one of you might have sold me some of those frames.

I have an old Leatherman multitool that I would like to modify but I can't get the damn thing apart. any tips on getting those little bolts loose to open it up and liberate one of the screwdrivers to make room for something else? I have been grabbing the ends of those discs with pliers and slipping and pinching my fingers for the past 30 minutes, no results.

I have been considering buying a machete for clearing trails while mountain biking for a while. they are certainly very useful for other things than cutting holes in people! I just don't know how to carry it while riding. I think a folding saw would be more helpful.

hey guise, I don't know a lot about knives, but I once had a nice Spyder pocket knife and lost it. i have a $20 gift card from REI and I was hoping to spend $20-30 on a new one. I just need something that clips in my pocket and can be used for everyday stuff like opening packages and slicing fruit. any suggestions?

Dajo Ascent

Gerber Evo Jr Serrated

Columbia River Pazoda (with awesome spork thing!)
Gerber Remix
etc

so REI has a lot of knives under $30. what's going to be most useful for me?

anyone want to buy my Tacstar T6 flashlight? it's made to be put on a gun and used to blind whomever you are about to shoot. I wanted to use it as a headlight for my commuter bike but it's overkill for that. takes 123A batteries.

(sorry to bring this thread up again but no one is going to read about this in the sell/swap forum.)

Site Help and Rules / stupid search function
« on: March 23, 2008, 11:07:00 AM »
the search function does have a very serious shortcoming- minimum word lengths.

it's impossible to search for a term like "KHE" or "rim" because they are too short. how else might i search for topics about a "rim" or just KHE parts?

do you weed out old user names that are abandoned? some people sign on, post one or two threads, then never return. (probably a wise decision on their part and evidence that there is life after bikeguide.) is this a drag on the infrastructure of the site?
