Magnetic pedals would be interesting to check out.

I guess they couldn't really replace clip in shoes in mtb and road riding, because those require that you have a lot of resistance for pulling the pedal up... but then very little resistance when you do a different motion with your foot to unclip.... If the magnets were strong enough for you to pull up on the pedals, then it would also be very difficult to "unclip" or "unmag." 

On a random-ish note, Pascal's foot cancer made me wonder if that's what Bob Marley died of.  Apparently he had a different type of cancer in his toe, but didn't get it amputated and ended up dying.
