Always wanted to try out flatland but never had the balls to go and buy a bike

Is it actually that essential to have a flatland specific bike or could a lot of it be done on a regular bmx with four pegs?

You definitely don't need a flatland specific bike. It does make certain tricks more comfortable, but it does't make it any easier. I know a kid who rides a 21" POS wal-mart bmx thats getting pretty good.
Throw some pegs on your bmx and give it a try. The first few months are really tedious and frustrating, but once you learn some tricks and progress it becomes way more fun than street or trails IMO.
