On behalf of couch I figured I'd post a sneak peak of the hub guard he's making available for the Gsport Ratchet hubs.

7075 aluminum guard is made to replace the non drive side collar on the Ratchet hub. Simple plug and play component. The guard is roughly 2 oz in weight and will become available hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks. They'll retail for $30 + shipping.

We have one currently being ridden by a local rider and we're testing for any bending issues (crushing into spokes). If all goes well there will be a small batch available and as interests rise we'll have more available.

Feel free to comment with questions and mention any interest in purchasing one.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r184/20inwheels/Couch/IMG_0021.jpg

The guard may appear small next to the drop, but this is due to clearance issues with certain dropout/chainstay/seatstay configurations. It is kept the same 30mm OD as the stock collar next to the dropout.

Thanks for looking :]

Looks nice for sure.

I really want a Ratchet, but I just bought a WTP Supreme hub like, seven months ago and its perfect.

Maybe i'll take my guard off and grind the flanges all to hell so I can justify getting a Ratchet, and this hubguard.

Technically that looks like it'd work with the Homer hub too. If I'm right in assuming the non drive side sleeve is the same on all hubs or something. Good work couch!!!

I don't see any reason why I couldn't do that.

Update... Material has been ordered. It should be here tomorrow or Monday. I highly doubt this will need months of testing and I don't want to make you guys wait.

The first one I made, shown in photos, is a press fit. It doesn't use an O-Ring like the G-Sport collar. Would you guys rather have an O-Ring or a press-fit?

Does a curved profiled profile-esque* one work/wear better than a flat angled one like an fbm?

Would be good to see one in place for scale and fit. Is there any detailing on the back?

*Work it out, i cant think of any way of rewording so it makes sense.

couch
01-30-2009, 02:45 PM
In an effort to keep the prices down for you guys I kept the machining on the backside to a minimum. There is plenty of clearance to not rub the spokes but there arent any face grooves/counterbores... I'l post up a photo of the back side later. Production models will vary slightly.

I originally made it with a conical surface similar to the FBM guard and was going to relieve the back out. I figured it would look a lot cleaner and be faster to make (in turn being cheaper for you) to do the radiused surface instead. I think it looks much better anyways. Especially since the Ratchet has such beautiful curves...

Just curious, but do you do them all by hand or have CAD/CAM program for them?

couch
01-30-2009, 03:40 PM
It depends on what I'm making and when I'm making it. Most of the turning lately has been done on our engine lathe (manual). The hub shells were turned manually, so was the hub guard in the photo. The hub collars we're all done on a Swiss-type screw machine (cnc). I ran them in between jobs. The axles were started on the engine lathe and finished on one of our cnc lathes. Production on the guards will be done on one of our cnc lathes.... what am I missing... All the milling is done on either our vertical or horizontal cnc mills, depends on what machines are available for me to use. I do all the work myself...

Everything is drawn with AutoCAD and programmed with MasterCAM at my house.

Why not have a thick layer of plastic over it so it slides faster? Like with the BSD Jersey Barriers. Another idea, not sure how practical it would be, would be to have the guard on a bushing so instead of snagging and slowing grinds down, it just spins. How well do you think that would work?

I'd love to get a white one after the 48h Ratchet is out.

-MEAT-
01-30-2009, 04:19 PM
Cool, hope youll do a second run when the 48s are out? I wouldnt bother with the o-ring myself either, all the other hubs were fine without them.

Plastic will wear faster and leave less aluminum structure to prevent from going into spokes. 7075 has proven to work relatively well for those that are not 'Gland friendly', and tends to catch less than other alloy. This is just an alternative guard. Pegs don't need bushings, neither do guards. K.I.S.S.

couch
01-30-2009, 04:32 PM
I have absolutely no interest in any type of plastic. I wont be offering any colors either unless you want to pay extra for hard anodize. If there is a big enough demand I can send them to our local plating shop and have it done. As of right now I dont plan on doing it though. Unnecessary cost for you guys. The hard anodize will help harden the surface of the guards but I cant justify it right now since it is going to get beat real quick anyways... I could do it though if there is enough demand. As for white, no way. I dont want to have them painted/powder coated.

There are more photos of my stuff here... notamessenger.carbonmade.com

I have an online store too. It isn't ready to be posted yet though...

any chance you could put a chromo end piece on the outside edge like mutiny does? dont know how much it matters but ive had a mutiny for a looong time and its held up extremely well.

either way this is going to make it very hard for me to resist buying a ratchet now (when the 48h version comes out). i told myself i wouldnt buy one until someone made a guard for it (that isnt a gland) and now there is one...

There is really no need for it to have a chromo end piece. A full crmo guard would have an advantage of 'taging' less. However it would rust and it would weigh a bit more.

The reason the mutiny guard probably lasted so long because the steel cap prevented deformation along with the thickness of the guard supports it more so on the axle (comparison to the 7-8mm width of a FBM).

As you can tell from this guard it is supported the full width (some 20+ mm, I forget the exact measurement). This supports the guard greatly and being that it is minimally relieved on the back side only strengthens it overall. Should be one hell of a guard.

A lathe works in 2d, you could draw the parts as 3d model, but youre guna have to convert them back to a 2d profile at some point and most machines use the autocad file type anyway. Its a hell of a lot cheaper and quicker than the 3d programs too.

However, as stated earlier in the thread, (I believe) I said I don't even have the material yet. Just the prototype being tested. I just moved to a new apartment and I don't have internet there yet so I haven't been able to update the bigcartel site yet. I need to change it from buy now to coming soon. I wasn't ready for anyone to see the site yet which is why it wasn't sut up for coming soon. Oh well.

Please don't make any orders, or at least if you do, understand it is going to be at least a week until they are ready to ship. Thank you for your patience. Take note though, if you place an order now, your order will be processed first...

so happy when i saw this post but i've got a qn.

wouldn't the guard get "crushed"(get narrower) when you're tightening it crazy hard since it's an aluminium compared to the steel collars?

the steel collars sticks out 1mm or so, will the guard be the same width as the collar or will be slightly wider so that it'll be "crushed" to fit nicely?

i had problems with my profile cone spacers(rear hub) rubbing against the bearing covers and causing the wheel to screw up. it happened when i had a hub guard. just afraid the same thing might happen to my ratchet if i were to get one of your guard.

couch
02-01-2009, 05:29 PM
The Profile cones crushed because of the o-ring groove they put so close to the end of the collar. I had the same problem. I made a solid one and never had a problem after that.

My guard is a few thousandths wider than the og collar. Not noticable though. I did this just to simplify dimensions, not for any crushing reasons. the bearings have a large inner race and the guard has a huge contac area, I highly doubt it will rub, especially since there is so much clearance between the actual guard and the hub shell/bearing. The guard only comes in contact with the axle, inner race and dropout. It is no where near anything else. You won't have this binding issue.

Also, the Marmoset hub features aluminum collars and has no issues of crushing just for a real life instance.

The guard is made of a stronger aluminum (7075) then most collars/aluminum hardware so there shouldn't be any worries.

The hub shell sits pretty far inward on the wheel (dish) so there's not to big an issue that requires a larger OD of the guard. If we did make it much bigger we'd get comments of it being too large so ya can't win either way, haha.

Coupled with a 2.1 tire (and larger) should provide for a VERY protective setup of both the shell and the spokes.

Oh dear, so you're saying you want a spoke guard? Hub guards are meant to protect the hub, I don't think it needs to be any larger than it is, plus the ratchet has beastly flanges so really you're #1 concern is the spoke head and bend. Which the guard definitely covers.

ok superchief i mean zombie. hmm...go grind some shit then i might think about listening your opinion on this.

I will openly admit I don't grind, but that doesn't mean I can't understand the function of a hub guard, If your going to bash on it then do it because it's "ugly" to you, questioning the size means you're questioning it as a whole

am i allowed to vote for a marmoset compatible guard with a spacer so it can work on a ratchet? but "blend in" the spacer

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/9331/doubledutynq5.jpg

i'd buy 2, and when they wear, rotate them front-back (when the coaster comes out)

Cankles, great idea. For now though I am going to make hub specific guards. Maybe some time in the future when I have some time to play around I will make a batch like that. I need to sell these first so I can buy material for matching Marmoset guards... I really do like your idea though. If I make those I'l hook you up with a set.

As for the size issue you guys have now... The OD of the guard is 2.500", slightly larger than the hub flange. Note, this isn't a "spoke guard", it is a "hub guard". Like super.chief stated, it is protecting the weakest part of the spoke, the head/elbow. I wouldn't stress it. I will try and get some comparison shots up soon. Photos of it side by side other guards.

Alright, so here's the deal. I am going to have 25 of them hard black anodized. The lot charge is just over a hundred bucks at my local plating service.

Price for black guards will be $35.

The remaining guards from this batch will stay silver. I will add a black option to the online store. That will be the best way to order them. That way I can keep track of everything better. Again, I don't even have material yet, it will be here tomorrow morning. Ordering now isn't necessary since I won't process the order or even accept the payment until I have them finished. I will process the orders in the order I receive them though so if you want to, make the order. Order order make the order in order to order one and send the order in the order I receive the order, order order.

I will have 9 polished guards ready to ship by the end of the week hopefully. The barstock I ordered came a little shorter than expected so I didn't get quite as many pieces as I planned. looks like it barely covers the flange?

super_chief
02-18-2009, 12:42 PM
Yes, you'd be correct in noticing it barely overhangs the flange. As we all know Gsport hubs are quite large to begin with so we didn't want to push it too much with a large OD guard. With your wheel dish, tire, and this guard you should have a very minimal amount of spoke area exposed. The guard should work quite well depending on how unique your grinding skillz are.

As Seditious Canary would be quick to point out, this guard is not neccessary as we should be landing directly on the pegs all day long.

We decided to keep the guard fairly flush with the hub to keep the aesthetic lovers happy and because, well, it's a HUB guard. We all know what other guard is out there if you're chasing after some spoke protection.

Thanks for eye ballin'

Nice.

i hope empire sells them for the same price as couch sells them for.

if not, shame on them. :)

How do you work that out?

If you want the convenience of Empire paying out up front, holding stock, running a website and credit card set-up and being there all the time to answer the phone and deal with questions then you need to PAY FOR IT...

It MAY be that Couch can shave some money off the price he charges Empire to account for the fact he wont have this hassle, but my guess is that the price is pared right back already so expect at least some price rise...

And if you are going to moan about it then you better moan about the difference between retail and wholesale price of every other thing you buy too, from food to toilet roll...

:)

firstly,
the smiley symbol next to my last sentence indicated that that sentence was a joke. obviously i know if there will be a rise and i fully understood that it is normal.

however AFAIK, couch's price is retail price. so maybe i can safely expect empire's price would be the same because they also sell at retail price right?

also, CMIIW on this but, because empire is awesome, they will be happy enough with that tiny profit margin without needing to be greedy and raising the price like no tomorrow (not that they do it already) :) although i believe they are the only shop on earth that sells the ratchet guard

I'm disgusted that you didn't get your name in the select by brand section.
