I'm looking to boost my signal, and I've run into a problem. Leave it to a Mac product to suck a big one.

I've got a Belken wireless router, and a friend gave me an Apple Airport Express. After reading some literature on the Airport Express I've learned that it is not possible to use it as a tool to boost my signal unless I have an Airport Extreme.

Seriously? C'MON!?

Haha. I can't stand the Airport Extreme. I'll try to find something else.

It is possible, but you basically have to run an ethernet cable to the express, then setup a "new" wireless network. It's a finicky process because you have to give it the same SSID and change the subnet, then turn off DHCP on the express, but I don't see why it wouldnt be possible. However, to do it without running a cable would require an AEBS or another Express with a cable run to it as I described before.

Just out of curiosity, why can't you stand the airport extreme? Sure it's a little expensive but it's worth every penny, especially if you have some external hard drives you want to connect to it. Plus if your computer has 802.11n, its super fast.
p.s. I do own an Airport extreme, so I'm speaking from experience.

If you are interested in doing what I suggested first, PM me and I'll give you a walk through.

For my basic needs of face-melting-fast internet speeds, the extreme just doesn't cut it. I could get some pretty intense routers for the same amount of money, but in reality I just need something to boost my signal so I don't get kicked off the web every five minutes while trying to do research.

Plus 802.11n increases the range of your network by around 30% but I respect your decision to not buy an Extreme, just saying.

I understand. I'm just not too concerned with speed. I stopped gaming after CS 1.5.

But every now and again I login to the 'ol steam account.

Yea the speed wasn't an issue for me, it was more so the range and the ability to attach hard drives. Now I can browse bikeguide from my back porch and the AEBS is on the second floor at the front of the house.

Right now I can get internet if I click my heals three times and wish on a shooting star.
