Does is seem like the newer round is longer? From your picture it almost looks like the shoulder lengths are different, which would cause the round to seat differently in the chamber. That can cause the overpressure problems since the bullet would be seating further back in the chamber from the way that shoulder looks to my internet micrometer eye.

EDIT: Changed the photo because the last one I took was shitty. The new round is on the right, the one on the left is what I normally shoot.

Whoops, you're right. I was comparing the two as if the new one was on the right. Goes to show how the Soviet Union packaged their rounds. Could just be brittle brass or an overcharge of powder as well. If your Mosin shoots the bulk pack just fine it doesn't seem like it should be an issue of headspacing.

Shoulder demensions look off i have the same problems on my mosins, its not easy to find 7.62x54 but 7.62 39 is plentiful, the 54r is hit and miss and from various supliers and regions canada sucks for ammo but svt40's are plentiful and cheap.

The left round is spam can x54r, the right one is romanian.

The split neck rounds were PROBABLY split before you shot them and you did now know it.

Take apart the bolt completely, clean it.  Check the primer depth on all your rounds and check for splits/cracks, even tiny one, in the neck near the crimp.

too true! i'd love to be able to casually squeeze off a few rounds now and again for a laugh, but fuck potentially allowing some trigger happy, paranoid moron to actually own one.

Im so glad i was only in the UK for a day and a half this time around. too many chumps

Seems about right.  A few of the UK guys on the board are good people though.

Might buy a M&P .40 from a freind. Is $470 to much for a gun with about 500rds threw it it. Will included the backstraps, carrying case one extra mag and 550-600 rds...kinda feel like it is.
