Actually we can get ahold of all those things. and we can shoot them.
I personally know a dude with some 1919a4's and some browning 50's and a minigun.

Civi's should be able to own anything they want as long as they do the atf or nfa paperwork. with the Civi's dont nee attitude you sound like an anti.

yeah and i see no problem with that. Any one in this thread or any one who owns a gun knows the risk and precautions of gun ownership. unless you are one of the random euro pricks who come in here and call us rednecks.
Plus i will be the first person to tell you i bought my shotgun to shoot who ever comes in my house un welcomed.

So I am awaiting my FOID card and I am pondering my first purchase. What do you guys think about a Glock, G17 model to be specific. I know that 9mm will be the cheapest round to buy out of what glocks can handle.

it really doesnt matter what i think or what other people think.
You need to go to a range and rent  a few 9mms in your price range and shoot them all. and go with what ever feels good in your hands. Dont just buy  a glock because its a glock. you need to buy what feels good.

Very valid point. I have shot with the g17 before and to be honest I love the gun. Is it worth trying out different Calibers in the glock family. I want something for home defense as well as target practice.

on a side note any places for cheap ammo? I could use several hundred rounds of 7.62x54r preferably surplus.

Yup.  I had originally been considering a G17 myself.  Once I got to handle and shoot one I couldn't stand the way it felt in my hand and ended up going with a 9mm XDm.  9mm may also be the cheapest to shoot but you should also look at its availability in your area. It won't do you much good if you can never find ammo for it.

I have a Glock 27 and I love it. Its a .40S&W

Unless you're buying twenty boxes at a time the price difference between 9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP isn't going to be that big of a difference. If you can, go with something bigger than 9mm. Proper shot placement is key, however there's no real reason not to go with something with a little more power. The Glock 17's are great firearms. All of the Glocks are. Anyone that says different either hasn't shot one or simply has their head up their ass. They don't fit everyone's hands, but no gun does. You said you love it though so it obviously fits your hands. Go to the range and rent the same size in different calibers then make the call.
