The Bike Shop / best brakes around these days?
« on: November 16, 2014, 06:40:56 PM »
So, after a 3 year hiatus from BMX, I'm back riding and I love it. I'm building up a new bike, and one thing is for sure: it needs to have brakes. As much as I like the way brakeless bikes feel, it's all fun and games for me until I have to go down a hill, or slow down at a skatepark, or feel lazy on a manual, etc.

I remember a few years back Fly brakes were pretty much the best around (or at least my personal favorite). From what I can tell now, they still make a brake, but it lacks the cool machining that I liked on the old ones which makes me want it a little less. My questions for you guys are what brakes do you all run, any new brakes worth checking out (those new Shadow Drew Bezanson ones look cool), any brakes to stay away from?

Also, for what it's worth, they'll be mounted on welded 990 mounts on the seat stays, and they'll be grabbing a black hard anodize Odsy 7ka rim. Any feedback is appreciated.

Seems like a decent idea. I had a set of profile hubs on my last bike and they were great. Looking forward to purchasing another set for a new build I'm working on.

I would seriously pay $100 for a pair of black and white Etnies Terraneas. I had two pairs back in like 2007 or whenever they were being made. Those were awesome.

As of right now, Adidas Busenitz shoes are treating me pretty well. I hope cup soles/more padded early/mid 2000s style shoes make a comeback. I loved the shoes of that era.

Guy definitely has a more classic style which is refreshing to see. That high speed 360 over the road was nuts though.

Backwards rail at the end was savage

The Bike Shop / Re: FBM Re-Releasing the Angel of Death?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be ordering one of these. I had the original AOD 10 years ago when I first started riding. It was my first "real" aftermarket frame. Stoked as hell they're re-releasing it and the geometry is pretty much fine with me. I'm not super picky about geometry, as long as it's not anything extreme like a super short or super long backend or some super steep or super mellow head tube angle. I'm actually going to call FBM to see if they'll make one with welded CS guards (like the old T-1 Byrnes Barcodes and 1st gen SFA). If they could that would pretty much seal the deal for me.

The Bike Shop / Re: Mid school "collecting"

I wouldn't call myself a collector, but I had a couple of cool gems at one point. Unfortunately they were all at my mom's house and she threw them out years ago. The two highlights were my old Angel of Death frame that I rode when I was 14, and one of Bob Scerbo's old Animal OG sprockets that was actually given to me by Grimaldo Duran in 2004 when I was 13. In hindsight, I wish I'd saved more of my old parts, especially my gray Primo Pentagon seat, original aluminum railed Primo Balance seat, original metal Cielincki pedals, and a few others that I can't think of right now.
