The Bike Shop / Re: What did you do to your bike today? (v2)
« on: April 10, 2014, 03:31:52 PM »
Thanks for the compliments, but my fiancee just called to let me know she was unable to swing by the LBS.  I will take a few "as it sits" pics tonight after I steal a set of pedals off another bike in my shed.  I sold a few things I thought I would never use that would have been perfect for this bike.  I had a red sparkle Primo seat collecting dust that is on there and I forgot about the odd size seat post/clamp, but streached a Hoffman clamp and used a shim with an old Primo Rod for now.  The bars have a set of like new Robbie Morales Primo Grips on them, but they are not going with the bike.  Not sure if I have a spare set of ODI laying around or something else I have removed in the past.  I almost set it up with some one inch Hoffman bars and a front Bulldog brake for fun, but the other bars looked more correct.

Had an old 1999 Schwinn Joey Garcia Automatic frame deliver today.  Throwing it together for a friend of my fiancee to have a bike to ride as his car is about to die.  I have a lot of random mid school parts laying around from my dumb collector days, so I only have to purchase new rim strips, grips, and tubes to finish assembling the bike.  I threw on an older Pitchfork, Solid Iron Cross bars, Primo Pro top load stem, D-Cupp headset, Primo Powerbite cranks and bottom bracket, Superstar 990, and a set of rims that consist of Odyssey 48h rims, Primo Pro rear, and Primo SOB front hub.  If I remember, I will take a picture when it is finished.

I had a rough idea of what I wanted to build it up like. 48 spoke wheels and front brakes
If Joe and I hadn't made a trade that ended with me getting my wheels, I was planning on ordering a set of Profile 48h hubs and lacing to a set of Odyssey 48h rims I had laying around.  I was going to mimic my old 2001 Barcode that Gordy now owns.

2 quick questions cause im building up my morsecode.

front brakes yay or nay?

is 36-10 gearing too wild?
If my calculations are correct, 36-10 would be 72. I was running 28-9 which is 62.2 and the "standard" 44-16 is 55.  That being said, I would bump up to an eleven tooth driver or a 30t sprocket.

As far as front brakes, I would do it.  I had planned to use the new Fast Pitch fork w/990 mounts on my new Barcode based on an dumb idea in my head to be different.  I thought of using Pitchforks, but ended up getting Demolition Elite forks without brake mounts as I remembered I hate setting up a front 990.

The Bike Shop / Re: Frame History?

Stunned by the number of frames some of you guys have gone through. I've been riding for about 15 years, and there's a good chance I'd still be on the S&M had it not been taken from me haha.

I will admit that I only had so many due to being stubborn, stupid, and playing catch up on what I had missed.  I was too stubborn to buy a new bike when I started back in 2010.  They were overpriced in my mind.  I had also just joined the bmx museum to find a few parts for my old Predator.  Caught a mid school bug and tried to track down a few frames that I wanted when I tried and failed to start back in 2001.  Won a Hutch from Porkchop BMX and traded it to get my first "new" bike, a Fit TRL 3.  Decided to listen to "experts" and bought the 21" S&M CW2.  Always felt long, so I bought a 20.75", but the geometry felt different.  Traded a 96 Dirt Bike to get a 21" WTF and hated the WTF more than anything I have owned.  Bought a 20.5 ATF to help a friend who was getting a divorce and loved it except that it fits my future step son better than me.  As soon as Joe Rich sent me an e-mail about the new Barcode frames, I sent the deposit and started saving for parts.  The Barcode will be my last frame/bike for a long time as I am about to turn 37 and have multiple injuries that limit what I can do on a bike and there is nothing I can do to improve most of them.  I no longer have a bicep tendon in my right arm, torn rotator cuff same arm, and the week before Christmas, my doctor informed me that I had snapped the T-1 in my neck in the past and C-5 and C-6 are bulging/pinching nerves.  I let off more than a few of the frames/bikes I have owned/rode, but most have just been fun projects to fix up to sell to purchase the next project or help someone out who needed a bike.

Hugh, I planned my Barcode from the beginning and was going to be "picky" and only use certain parts.  Then when it arrived, I stripped all the parts from my ATF to see if I liked this version of the Barcode over the two I have owned, 2000 or 2001 and the brown 2006.  Ran into some money and slowly I have assembled my Navy Barcode with mostly new parts.  I still need to locate my real camera and take a few pictures as I believe it is complete for now until the Black Flag bars deliver.  I think the only parts that are not new are the seat, post, sprocket, and hubs, but these are items I would not change.

I was in no rush either, but it cost me the bars I wanted for my Barcode. Hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow and I will take a few pictures of my fiancee's brown and my navy Barcode with a real camera.

New Animal MTT tires, Fly Ruben pedals, Fly Manual brake, and Tree cable delivered and was installed last night.  Woke up this morning to a blown front tube, so I am going to grab a few new tubes on the way home tonight.

Hoping the last of my parts arrive today so I can finish my Barcode.  Should at least have my brake, cable, and tires deliver, but I have a larger sprocket and pedals that should arrive in the next few days or so.

barcode with orange tires and camo parts actually looks good, but i like more unique bikes so this comment probably doesn't matter lol. i'd keep it as is :)
The brown Barcode is my fiancee's bike and nothing will be changed unless she says so. ;D
I was talking about a spare set of orange tires that I put on the blue one (not pictured) until my new parts arrive.  Life got in the way of building the blue one the way I wanted to originally and I just pulled the Odyssey pomegranite parts off until I have slowly been able to order the parts I wanted.  If not for a trade with hboost, I would not have my wheels.  The maroon T-1 bars will be replaced as soon as I find a set of the black FBM Black Flag bars.

Thank you for the compliment.  Tammy and I love to be a little different with our bikes.  She loves to hunt and wanted a "doo doo brown" frame, the real tree Odyssey Dirt Fork, S&M Redneck, and orange Odyssey parts were just icing on the cake to her.  It has taken too long to get it to this point, but she says it is finished (until she sees some other part in real tree camo or brown/bronze).

Huffy Department store Bike with small ape hangers
Murray Department store bike V-bar
87 Schwinn Predator (rode until 2001ish)
96 Hoffman Condor 1" (bought in 2001, did not realize that it was 1" and a 96, but rigged a mix between the two headset sizes to add a Dans complete parts package).
1999 DiamondBack Venom
2010 Fit TRL 3
1996 Hoffman Big Daddy
2011 Cam Wood V2 21"
2011 Cam Wood V2 20.75"
1996 Dirt Bike
2012 WTF
1996 Dirt Bike (#2)
2012 Holmes 22
2010 ATF 20.5"
2014 Barcode 20.75" (should be ready tomorrow night)

I only listed ones I can truly say I rode.  I have owned a few others that may have been ridden one time, two at most, before I sold or traded them because they felt wrong.  The Holmes 22 is one that should be on the list of traded bikes, but it only took a dozen small part swaps to get it to the point that I no longer hated it.

I am waiting on the last few parts to finish my 2014 Navy Barcode.  They should deliver tomorrow, so I will add a picture or two as soon as I swap the brake and tires out.  Here is a few of the slow progression to get it where it should be.

It currently has a set of the ugly Orange Odyssey Ross tires, but they are getting replaced now that I know the chep brake I had laying around will not work.

Here is my financee's brown 2006 Barcode:
