The Bike Shop / Front hub guard opinions
« on: August 17, 2015, 05:34:03 AM »
I'm struggling to decide between either Merritt or G-sport front guards. I recently got reacquainted with a Glands 2 that I've put on my rear wheel and it's better than any hubguard I've had so far.

I'm running an Animal hub but keep going through those plastic guards on 180 smiths etc.

So before I import some hubguards (neither brand is available in my country) I'd like to hear if anyone's had any problems.

Yeah, looks like it. I'm just an old dude hoping it's not true. Dans Comp's not getting any more Edwin grips, Custom Riders in Uk have 90% of the AbikeCo stock on "discontinued" status too. Time will tell.

Is Animal dead? I know Schnell posted some info on that other forum and got Navaz a bit upset but since then there's still been no talk about what's up with Animal. Anyone got anything on it?

That 3 bar to invert out of that ditch. Nose manual up to tailwhip was nuts and I love those 180 downside whips.

The only thing I can find fault with is that I would have loved to see a head on shot of that truck to table and preferably not slowo-ed. Everything else was 10 years ahead. So well filmed and edited too.

I'm a big fan of Devon Smillie's riding.

also Grant C, Seeley, Animal young guns, Dub/BSD guys etc.

I'm 38, only grind stuff and have never ridden a ramp for more than 10min. Anyone who's pushing the weird grinds on little ledges is fine with me. Give's me something that I can still go out and try without pulling my back out.

Anyone Dig interviews seems to be in line with my tastes too.

The reason the bars got discontinued was that Animal wanted to do the bigger ones and they wanted to use my name on them and I said no, so when they got made I told them they can not do mine anymore, I thought the bars were fine the way they were. Just some bullshit really. I would like to remake them as Skapegoat bars but I don’t really want to go that route and be a bike company because it never seems to work out well for people who choose that. Obviously the politics with me and Animal goes a lot deeper than that but that is the simplest way I can explain it.

He's been off the Team page for months now. This is no surprise to most people. He had that interview in Dig talking about the bars and him and Ralph not seeing eye to eye but didn't elaborate.

For me, I took the locknut off the non-drive side of my hub and just put the guard on. The frame holds everything together so that locknut isn't really missed. I've been running my KHE ACB with no locknut for about 2 years.

Other option is to put your dropouts over the outside of a bench vice and slowly open the vice. This will widen the rear a bit. Do it in small amounts ie flex it out and then loosen again before flexing it out a bit further etc.

Worked for me.

Surly tread pattern should play a part in this too? A street tyre in a certain size would stretch less that a dirt orientated tyre of the same size?

Adam doesn't care and neither do the brands. As long as you are referencing them, getting them hits etc, then they have won.

Wasn't he riding a Cvlt recently? I take it this is a spare bike and the "in jail" thing hopefully isn't true.

Mosh was ahead of it's time. They had a really stacked team too.

Isn't it technically Vinny's company via Animal (but in the same way that Sunday was Jim C's via Odyssey)? Ed and Tom just had frames (and I suppose some commission on them).

The frame market is so over saturated anyway that I think it would be such of a hassle to keep it going.

I'd have it if the lever was oilslick. Those tyres are hideous too. Freaking marshmallows.
