The Bike Shop / Re: I hear you guys like big tyres

Yeah, I've seen this before and determined that i would braaap the fuck out of it.

Also, upon further inspection, you could use those wood inlays to hide your fasteners.  Cut a groove 1/8" deep or so, fasten the plates to studs brazed to the columns with flathead screws, epoxy strips of finished wood into the groove.

I think this is my final answer.

If I were building that at work, my first thought would be to hit up our foundry and see if they could cast it.  Maybe cast it in three pieces, do the surface finish, than assemble them with a large bolt through the middle.

But since they would either tell me no, or if they said yes, I wouldn't like the price, I think I would stick with the three pieces.  Either size the ID of the column large enough to get a ratcheting wrench in there, or cut access openings opposite each of the stud that would be hidden behind the plates when assembled, but are accessible before the three pieces are assembled.  If you use socket cap screws, you could get away with some pretty small holes and make some little plugs to fill the holes once the plates are attached.

Then I would tell the designer who drew the thing that I would appreciate it if he considered producability before designing insanely cool looking shit.  :P

That bitch is sick.

I really liked my 2-ton, but I was crashing a lot, and crashing hard.

I'll get another 22 when I get a lot more consistent.

The Lounge / Re: Do you like old or new bike companies?

I know it's not popular, and I'll most likely get hated for this, but I'm stupidly loyal to S&M.   Odyssey and Profile also, but that's not nearly as unpopular.

I took a really long break from like 1995ish (when I joined the Navy) to 2012,  and when I came back, S&M (and ODY/Profile) seemed to be mostly exactly how I left them.  Moeller was still in charge, and they even still sold Dirtbikes.  I didn't even recognize most other companies.

Are the Dugan tires going to come in P-Lyte?

I've really started to like light tires.

I'm diggin the blue.  Whenever they do another run I think I'm gonna scoop a brakeless frame in whatever color they do that isn't raw.

I love this bike.  I keep trying to ride my ATF because the geo is more modern and I'm supposed to like it more, but it never feels right and I end up putting my barcode back together after a day or two.

My 4 pawl driver skipped way more than my 3 pawl ever did.

Torx is the worst invention. Causes so many problems on cars.
I've never rounded one.  I vaguely recall learning at some point that they resist rounding better than hexs.
In theory. Add in rust, over torquing, and parts stretching/compressing and they're way more of a hassle than they're worth. Unless you use an impact gun to remove them, there's a good chance of stripping because they do NOT like to be used with a ratchet or L shaped key. They like perfect rotational force whereas allens seem to be more ok with a lever being used. At least in my experience anyways. I run into a lot of problems with Torx bolts on automotive brakes.
Brakes aren't fair because in addition to the large (mostly shear) stresses, corrosive environment and presence of brake dust (which tends to penetrate crevices it shouldn't be able to, then bakes/rusts things together), they are also seeing a ton of thermal cycles.  I kinda think that the reason Torx is used so relatively extensively in brakes is because of the cam out resistance.

That's all speculation though, and just because I've had success with them doesn't make them the best, just what I prefer and use when I can.  In my limited (and not very successful) FSAE brake design experience, I speced 12 point bolts for all the brake fasteners, but that was because that's what they used on F1 cars, so they had to be good.

I don't doubt that it has a mechanical advantage over 6mm. I prefer bigger sizes when working on things, but nobody offers replacement tools for it. Park Tools does not make a 7mm allen key in any of their tools/sets.

Now move over to 1/4 or 5/16 and I would understand that.

People would kill me, but if it were up to me, I'd use torx for everything.

Wobble sucks, but was easy to fix.

I never had the slipping issue you mention.

But man, motherfuck the skipping.  Maybe I need new pawls or something.

Barge LS is pretty nice.  Kinda like Vans that don't shit the bed quite as fast.

RVMs are my favorite, but they are getting hard to find.

The Bike Shop / Re: Keychain help

My observations on the keychain:

They are crazy sensitive to being too tight, and make a ton of noise if they are.  I run mine just barely tight enough to not slap.

They need to be lubed straight out the box.  I use that wax like chain lube you get at Walmart.

They creak if the master links are too tight.  I back mine off about a quarter turn from fully snug.  But I also check it pretty regularly to make sure its not loose.

I have one of the first batch and I love it.
