The Bike Shop / Removing blown bearing race in odyssey driver
« on: May 06, 2015, 03:01:51 AM »
Specifically the newer type, with a roller bearing in the middle and a normal sealed bearing on the outside.

because of the roller bearing, i cant get the race out with the usual angled bit of metal/screwdriver + hammer to the back technique which usually does the trick for drivers with multiple sealed bearings in them.

thoughts? suggestions?

Bike Gallery / Angel of Death
« on: May 04, 2015, 09:59:22 PM »
Took some proper pics of my bike before it gets too thrashed. Was told it looks almost normal yesterday which was a nice compliment

Frame: FBM AOD 21.25
Forks: Odyssey
Stem: Bud BMX
Bars: Perfect 10s
Grips: ODI
Seat: Primo
Post: Colony
Clamp: Primo Viking
Cranks: Eclat
Pedals: JCPC
Sprocket: MDS 28t
Chain: Keychain
Wheels: Gsports laced to 7KAs
Tyres: Animal GLH 2.25
Front guards: Knight
Rear: Zodiac and Daily Grind
Pegs: 1 Snafu, 1 Cult placcy, 2 randoms off complete bikes

Pretty much my perfect/dream bike now, feels weird cos its so solid though. Im used to rattly flexy pieces of shit

Also my sunday as it currently stands (needs normal grips on it, and a rear hub rebuild)

The Bike Shop / FAO big sprocket/driver hunters
« on: April 21, 2015, 02:36:11 AM »
I know some of you have voiced your frustration on here before at not being able to get hold of sprockets and hubs with drivers as large as youd like these days.

I spotted the following available on tree's website, so i thought i would share

30-39t spline drive sprockets

11-16t 2pc thread on drivers

not sure what hub internals tree hubs use these days, as far as im aware they used to be joytech but those look more like the old proper hubs-maybe someone can clarify, so you can work out what hubs theyll fit

The Bike Shop / New coasters (wtp + profile)
« on: April 14, 2015, 07:46:18 PM »
because noone rides anymore, yall was slow off the mark with some new coaster offerings

firstly wtp helix.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGRzD2a20y8

essentially another yuhub bastard offspring (though that shell looks to have some blowfish dna)
but that 3 point clutch resistance drag thingymajig seems to me like it could be a vast improvement

with the drag spread across 3 bearings, they might end up not jamming up like they normally do and getting ground down as quickly. shame the hubshell is a hog so youd have to be all weird and awkward about your friends knowing you were riding it

next up the profile z coaster

it really sums up the current state of bg that everyones not losing their shit about this. its profile, but its a new design, but AMERICUH, but wobble etc
http://bmxunion.com/daily/profile-racing-z-coaster-slack-cam-ring-videos/
http://bmxunion.com/daily/profile-racing-why-the-z-coaster/

when i first saw cam rings i facepalmed, cos firstly its annoying enough to have to buy extra parts to change the slack. added to this profile small parts/spares etc cost a fuckin fortune outside of the states so on top of the extortionate price this hub will cost alone, your going to need to shell out even more to play around with the slack (not such an issue in the US where such things are more competatively priced)

it looks like a decent mechanism from what i can see though (which isnt that much on the vids), though im not quite sure how the drag works. good point about the clicking too mr degroot, that does give a decent indication of whether its engaged or not which is useful. it may drown out some of the squeak from your naan bread gum tyres as you do fashion squeaker skids though-you have been warned

two main questions about this hub
1. whos gonna be the first to buy one, take it apart and take lots of pictures for us?
2. whos going to be the first to rip off the mechanism and start printing their name on clones using the same internals?

it does look a lot more reliable than the yuhubs, but i dont trust company blurbs so the strength of the design and reliability will have to be determined once this hub is released into the wild

The Bike Shop / zinc coated stem bolts yay or nay
« on: March 21, 2015, 12:10:07 AM »
probably the nerdiest query since q factor was an issue, but are there any positives or negatives to having zinc coated stem bolts? (aside from them not rusting)

the head of one from my stem was seized in recently and i had to cut the bolt in half to get the stem off, the rest of the bolt unthreads fine so im guessing the sticking point was the head, and i was wondering if it was worth tracking down some non zinc coated m8s (ive already got some more zincy ones but i dont want them to get stuck again)

The Bike Shop / BG "cool" frames
« on: March 04, 2015, 06:40:23 PM »
Seeing as this year does indeed seem to be the year of the CCR, i figured why not have a thread to remember all the frames that have been super cool over the years in the small corner of the internet that is the bike gallery.

Last year it was the barcode for sure, before then honourable mentions are fit s3, take ivy, seshin shithawk, could maybe even say sundays were at one point. post some more of them and refresh my declining memory cells

The Bike Shop / removing marmoset collars
« on: February 15, 2015, 05:21:00 AM »
without mangling them or the hubshell, whats the best tactic? got a nice fresh one and i need to get the cone spacers/collars off to put some guards on but theyre on really tight

The Bike Shop / quick spoke length lacing question (gsport hubs)
« on: February 09, 2015, 08:22:12 PM »
ratchet to hazard lite, 36h. i should be lacing this 3x is that right? spoke calculators say 184mm spokes for this build but im sure the ones i took out of an identical wheel i dismantled were 186s

also marmy to haz lite, thats a 186 job yes?

Bike Gallery / BTM camo
« on: February 02, 2015, 07:30:38 PM »

Frame: BTM 21.25
Fork: Odyssey F25
Stem: BUD BMX
Bars: Perfect 10s
Grips: old kink ones i found in the shed
Seat: Primo
Post: lolony
Cranks: Eclat

Chain: Kmc 10 euro one
Pedals: JCPC
Front wheel: WTP supreme on Odyssey Hazard
Rear wheel: Federal coaster 48h on Odyssey 7KA

It looked like this before, took my brake and cassette off for a change, and also switched bars cos these are shorter. Will probs go back to them and the brake etc when I get my AOD, just fancied a coaster nibble and a bit of a change.
I also sewed the rip in my seat up, now these have been discontinued i gotta take extra care of it (plus the duct tape just kept coming off)

Quote
Nigel Sylvester might be BMX's most recognizable figure, but his life and career are anything but typical of the sport. From starting his own clothing line to putting out videos featuring French Montana, the BMX pro has carved out a personal brand within a culture that values staying insular. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we follow Nigel across the country to see where he came from and where the sport is taking him next. Catch Part 1 and Part 2 later this month on VICE Sports.
