See what I was saying about "panties in a twist".

But please, continue responding by jumping the gun and translating my posts into what you want them to be.  Also, please try to be more creative with your insults.

You started the name calling.

I haven't translated any of the inane garbage you've spewed from your fingertips into anything. What you say clearly showcases your archaic way of thinking and your lack of substance is articulated quite clearly through out this thread.

You posted an article in support of opposition to gun control, I posted one that shows why stricter gun control is needed. You write it off as not relevant because it's two weeks old. I'm embarrassed for having thought you were at least a critical thinker who's able to conduct a debate by following the rule of logic and reason, but I was wrong. I'm sorry for giving you too much credit.

I don't know why I bother, you'll write off everything I say with your shield of ignorance and feign notions of superiority through indifference to what I write.

You're a testament to why America lost its good standing in the world and a shining example as to why the 'left wingers'  in society stand firmly atop the moral high ground.

I don't need to be creative with insults if I'm simply stating observed facts
You still are, and always have been, a tool, and in my own realization of how brainwashed you are I understand that any civil argument is lost on you.

No.  It supports the notion that cockholsters like you easily get your panties in a twist.  You could have at least found a more recent news story.

Hey, next time I'm in Louisiana we could settle it with a fistfight, but you've got a gun so it wouldn't be fair. I'd rather have a beer because I still always respected your right to an opposing viewpoint, I just disagreed with them.

But I'm a cock holster and I get my panties in a twist.
You however are the reason people fly airliners into your countries buildings.

My news link is invalidated because it's two weeks old?

I forgot that a massive killing spree is out dated after two weeks down there because it's so fucking common.

You're a mindless tool and the world would be a much safer, friendlier, and  better place if you and people who think like you weren't on it.

You're a dumb fucking redneck Wheelr, and you'll get yourself killed defending a fucking convenience mart one day, and the world won't even blink.

And do you feel that this article supports your stance on guns and gun laws?

Quote

At least 10 people were killed Tuesday in a shooting spree that spanned two small southern Alabama towns, state officials confirmed. The gunman, who turned the gun on himself, and the wife and child of a sheriff's deputy were among those killed.

The shooting started in a neighborhood in Samson, a town of about 3,000 about 15 miles north of the Florida border, just after 4 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) and ended 12 miles away at a manufacturing plant in Geneva, said Alabama state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, who represents Geneva County.

"He was shooting at just ordinary people going about their business," Smith told CNN, saying she had been briefed by state and local law enforcement.

The gunman, whose identity was not disclosed, shot himself at the Reliable Metal Products plant, state public safety spokesman Kevin Cook told CNN.

Authorities are also investigating an arson at a residence in neighboring Coffee County, where a body was found. That incident is thought to be related to the shootings, Cook said.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the gunman, who Cook said was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, knew any of the victims.

State police Cpl. Steve Jarrett told reporters that the gunman killed six adults and one child in three residences in Samson, before heading down state Highway 52, firing at least seven bullets into a state trooper car. The trooper sustained minor injuries from shattered glass.

Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward said one of his deputies lost his wife and toddler in the shooting at the first house. An infant was also wounded. Video Watch Sheriff Ward describe what happened »

"I can't describe what happened, why it happened," Ward told CNN affiliate WTVY. "It's just a sad day for Geneva County."

The gunman then killed another person at Samson Pipe and Supply and then another at a service station -- both on Highway 52, Jarrett said.

A witness told CNN Radio she saw a woman's body at the Big-Little Store service station off the highway as people gathered at the crime scene.

The gunman ended up at the Reliable Metal Products plant in Geneva, where police rammed his vehicle, forcing him to get out. He fired a 30-round burst with what appeared to be an M16, grazing Police Chief Frankie Lindsey with a bullet.

"Then the subject entered the business. Within minutes, shots were heard. ... Law enforcement officers found him dead," Jarrett said.

"There are believed to be additional people shot and wounded during these episodes," he said.

Sheriff's officials says the gunman was a former employee of Reliable Metal, CNN affiliate WEAR-TV reported.

The FBI bureau in Mobile, Alabama, sent an agent to assist the Geneva County sheriff's office and local police, a spokeswoman for the FBI said.

Col. Christopher Murphy, head of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, called the southern Alabama shooting spree "the worst that DPS has a memory of."

Another mass killing occurred in southern Alabama in 2002, when Westley Devon Harris gunned down six members of his 16-year-old girlfriend's family at their farm in Luverne. Harris was convicted and sentenced to the death penalty in 2005.

Small Member, I understand what you are saying but you seem to forget the purpose of the 2nd Amendment.  It is there to fight against a tyrannical government.  It's no surprise it is mainly the Dems who want to amend it.  They want to change the government toward a radically different model than what it was founded upon and many people won't stand for it.

The second has stood strong for years and sadly, many want to strip it away due to others reasons such as the failure to uphold a civil society and strictly enforce current laws.  Like mentioned before, all part of the "blame someone/something else/depend on the government" society some want to grow.

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have." -Thomas Jefferson

I never understand how so many can criticize the government on one topic and then go on to believe they always have our best interests in mind.  The federal government needs to shrink and state governments need more say in what their people can or cannot do.  California has strict gun control, people can move there if they don't agree with the majority in the state where they currently live.

I would be against it.  Again, we need to straighten out the current mess before we keep moving forward in the wrong direction.  It always makes me sick to see murderers and rapists get off with easy sentences and to then watch some question why crime is so high.

Our crime problem runs way deeper than the people's right to bear arms.

I understand too your point of the 2nd Amendment being there to protect the other rights in the constitution. I suppose its necessary too, even if only as an idea to hold on to.

The fact remains that if the 2nd amendment was suddenly removed today, even through legislation, the gun culture wouldn't suddenly disappear in the United States.

I think my issue really revolves around peoples opposition to gun laws and how they use the 2nd amendment to oppose them.

I've always been an opponent of the second amendment based on the common interpretation of it.

So I guess I've got to change my argument a bit. I can't now necessarily say I'm against the 2nd amendment entirely. I still think it shouldn't be there to protect gun ownership specifically, but that it should protect the right to rise up against an oppressive government. I think the specific wording of the amendment should be changed.

That, however, is a universal right to mankind and no document can make a claim against it, for it would be simple human nature to resist and therefor that fact alone would render any real need for a right like that in any kind of legal form to be almost arbitrary.

I've never been opposed to people owning guns, I've been opposed to people owning any type of guns they want.
I guess it just comes down to what kind of guns you can own, and who can own them.

I'm pretty sure that's where all our real arguments stem from.

That, and as a Canadian, I don't fear my government.

Ummmm, it is my right.  The reason it is number two is to insure the protection of the other rights you love so much.  I understand YOU don't think it should be a right but it has stood for over 200 years which to me is bolder than any statement you can make.  My other reasons I cite for owning a firearm are just side benefits.

All it would take is for the government to amend that right and suddenly it disappears. All the guns in the world can't stop a piece of legislation in a civilized country that adheres to the rule of law.

But you'd probably go to war for it right? They went to war over slavery too.

Slavery was part of that exact same document for 88 years as well.
200 years is certainly a longer period of time, but the simple fact that there are indeed amendments to that document proves that it in and of itself is not as infallible as you seem to think it is. It was changed before and it can be changed again.

Quote from: wheelr;2907662

Ownership of an inanimate object and ownership of a human being is two entirely different things.  Keep trying.

For us, yeah, but not according to the document we are talking about. For the 'forefathers' slaves were inanimate objects. They were possessions pure and simple, and they were defined as such in the literature of the day.

You're completely missing the context in which the document was written, and that is basically my point here.

What if you were constitutionally entitled to own miniature train sets? Or tea cozies? Or hats?

The idea that a possession is worthy of the highest legal protection a country can afford is so disturbingly absurd that it boggles the mind of those of us who use reason and logic to progress further in society.

Quote from: wheelr;2907662

Can you explain how the second amendment is "grossly misinterpreted today"?

Any situation in which someone tries to justify owning automatic weapons or excessive amounts of guns by using the 2nd amendment.
You can justify it by the reasons you may need said weapons (hunting, defense, sport shooting) and those are technically sound arguments, but using the constitution doesn't provide any solid grounds for owning weapons.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Quote from: wheelr;2907662

And sadly, the second isn't "a right of equal stature".  One must go through a background check in order to purchase a firearm.  One must follow hundreds of laws specifically addressing where, when, and how he can carry a firearm.  Maybe we should require background checks in order to excercise one's freedom of speech and freedom of religion as well.

Again, according to the constitution it is. There are many laws in place which limit the 1st Amendment to certain degrees and in certain situations. Many popular religions allow the practice of several things which the rule of law deems unacceptable. Stoning, canings, capital punishment, animal sacrifice, etc. that we have laws against.

I'll reiterate my point; the ownership of any specific possession should not be an inalienable right of equal importance as the other rights contained in the Constitution and subsequent amendments to it.

Would you be for or against a law that requires all new firearms for civilian issue to be usable only by its registered owner through any type of control  system (ex: fingerprint locks, dna locks, etc.) should said system become available?

I'll even concede to my hypothetical question that the system is not connected to any network so that the government couldn't 'shut it down' if they had to.

No, it's not.

Keep trying.

Keep trying at what?

You preach all the time how owning a gun is your 'right' because it's in the constitution. You have other reasons why you want a gun, and that's fine, but you always come down to the fact that it's your 'right'.
This is my observation based on the many discussions we've had on the topic.

Quote from: wheelr;2907554

Well, to be fair to the citizens they should have just outlawed murder and gang activity instead of stripping the people's rights.

And the only other thing that was in the constitution that protected the ownership of a specific thing was the right to own slaves. (Article 1, sections 4 and 9, and Article 4, section 2)

You argue that you are constitutionally entitled to own a specific item. In this case it is a firearm.

In their case, it was a human being.

I've always been against the second amendment as it is grossly misinterpreted today.

I've never had a problem with owning guns. I've had a problem with the idea that owning guns is a right of equal stature as the right to religion, freedom of speech, and all the other very important rights that protect a persons right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Man, get off this 'my right' thing.

Your argument is identical to why they wanted to own slaves.

Identical.

'Well, it's my right! It's in the Constitution!'

+1 for the right to own assault weapons eh? I'm sure they're loving their guns in Alabama.
The only people to shoot back were the police.
Sure, 'it all happened so fast' but that's how these things happen.
The gun laws are some of the lightest in Alabama, so why didn't someone blast him when he started shooting?

It's yet to be clarified if these were registered weapons. I have my suspicions that they are indeed registered.

I see very very little evidence as to why assault weapons should be legal under the constitution. They sure as hell weren't part of the arms the fathers were talking about.

Rifles? Sure. Handguns.....ugh....maybe....maybe. Assault weapons? Why not missile launchers? I should be able to own artillery too!

Fuck...

It was lame a year ago when the last comic showed up and it's still lame. And I bet a large majority of the forum posters don't even recognize them, given the abundance of new people.

Indeed. Or a least do a new episode.
