The Lounge / Re: So, lets talk about Garage Ramps!
« on: October 23, 2015, 01:18:34 AM »
I looked into this before, I think I decided on a 4.5ft transition with it being 5ft tall. I have an old 'Thrashers' magazine about ramp building with loads of plans, and I remember looking at them for a while before planning it all out.

Post pictures of how it turns out!

I imagine airing an an eliptical ramp might get some getting use to.

i scanned and posted the THRASHER ramp plans book that I ordered a long ass time ago.

I have never spent time riding one, but it might be interesting to build a ramp with an elliptical transition.

http://rampplans.org/rpdo_mini.html

I don't know if this one is exactly elliptical.... but what it does is create a steep part only at the top, for peg tricks, but it also has more wheelbase area at the bottom to land on....

Site Help and Rules / problem getting to The Lounge and Bike Shop sections
« on: September 09, 2015, 11:47:35 AM »
The links to The Lounge and Bike Shop seem to frequently not work on this site.  Same problem on different computers, different browsers etc.  When I click on The Lounge or Bike Shop, it simply reloads the main bikeguide forum home page.

More specifically, it is the banner strip/stripe just under the ads that does not appear to link properly:

Even though it's some kind of fictional land (monsters and such), Lord of the Rings relies heavily on regional and class accents.

Imagine if you changed the accents in Lord of the Rings so that the Orcs sounded posh and the elves sounded cockney.

Or what if Game of Thrones had American or Australian accents....  "Fantasy" wouldn't be believable.  Which raises an interesting point--people need those stereotypical touchstones based in reality in order to "accept" fantasy.  Even though, the point of "fantasy" could be a completely different world. Why not just make up entirely new accents?

I say DON'T get the surgery, at least until you've tried everything else.

I developed carpal tunnel type symptoms when I was doing a temp job that involved 8 hours of computer mouse clicking in a database every day of the week for about 10 months (a boring job that paid very well).  I burned out my right arm, then switched the mouse to my left, then burned it out too.

Nothing helped until I quit that job and quit using a computer at all for several months.  It was repetitive strain injury.

I ended up taking a couple of jobs after that which involved very minimal computer work.  Now I can use computers again, but I do have to have it set up correctly. I have to have the keyboard and mouse low on a keyboard tray--not high up on the desk.  If I use that type of desk setup, symptoms will come right back within a day.

The bad part is I can't play guitar at all anymore. That brings the symptoms back.

Don't mess up your body.  Quit doing whatever it is that is triggering this.

. . . and either try getting a new cable or squirt some tri-flow down your existing cable to minimize friction.
 . . .

Most people fail to do this.  New housing without any kinks in it and FILLED with Tri-Flow is key (i actually use a light layer of white lithium grease on inner cable in addition to Tri-Flow).  Kinks in the housing or the inner wire create friction in the pull and reduce braking power.

When you add a good lever to this, your brakes should work really well regardless of the cleanliness of the rims and pads.  I'm not saying cleaning them doesn't help, I'm saying it's not the primary issue.

Short levers are not as good as long ones (basic physics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever ).  http://www.empirebmx.com/catalog/brake-stuff Those bent-out ones, like the DiaTech Gold Finger are a stupid work-around.  It's better to get handlebars with a narrower bend-to-bend distance, then have a long grip and plenty of finger room.  You can still do index finger braking by moving your hand to the outside of the long grip.   Like this:

I must be getting old because I can't stand this stuff. Pastrana turns everything into a circus and people get hurt for no good reason. Look at the video--these guys are dangerously high by any standard, rotating fast, and landing hard. Every one of them is moments away from a life altering injury and Pastrana is just cheering them on because it isn't his health he's risking. I know they have the ability to opt out, but the action sports peer pressure wins every time and these guys can't back down for fear of being labeled weak. Colin Winkleman destroyed both his ankles and a wrist for one of Pastrana's dumb shows and ended up taking his own life a year or so later. I can't help but think his career ending crash had something to do with his suicide.
BMX isn't BMX when it becomes a circus act.

That really sucked to hear about Winkleman. I'm trying to remember which show it was.  It was just Jackass right?  Pastrana wasn't involved with that?   Nate Wessel built the ramp and attached it to the van?

Ideas for quick fixes?

Auto Belt Dressing. Spray a little on. Your brakes will lock up.

This is only a quick fix though. I personally would rather have well lubed new housing, quality lever, quality brake, quality pads etc.

The Bike Shop / Re: Which bike size for a 5 year old?
« on: July 06, 2015, 10:15:23 AM »
I met a few parents at the skatepark and they all complain about the weight of the bikes. I think they have gotten WTP and United bikes, but might be wrong, its BMX companies though. The bikes are basically miniature versions of good bikes but weight so much that the kids cant get it off the ground, something to consider.

as far as lightness and stability, there is something to be said for bmx racing mini's, micro's, juniors, etc.

My 5 year old nephew is getting interested in bmx and always asking to come with me when I go riding so i want to get him a decent bike. I'm not sure which size would be best for him. He's about normal height for his age i think. I don't want to get him something too small that he'll outgrow in a year nor something too big that will be hard for him to handle. I'm looking for a bike that'll last him until he's 9 or so.
What's good?

I think a kid probably needs two or even three bikes from age 5 to 9.

That's an average of a foot of growth in height and like 45 pounds up to 70 pounds (on average) in weight:

The Bike Shop / Re: Larger bars with 5 to 6 degrees of upsweep?
« on: July 02, 2015, 04:22:59 PM »
Does anyone know of any bars with 5-6 degrees of upsweep, 10-12 backsweep that are 9 inches or greater?  I've noticed my wrists / hands naturally rotate so that I'm putting more pressure on the outside of my wrists and I'm thinking more upsweep can help with this.

Thanks.

Tree Bicycle Moto are tall and have a 4 degree upsweep option.
http://www.empirebmx.com/tree-bicyce-co-moto-handlebar

Or these:
http://www.empirebmx.com/daily-grind-bmx-century-high-handlebar

These aren't 9", but you could run a tall stem:

Maybe someone should invent slanted grips that add upsweep to bars that don't have it..... ; )

. . . We're moving to Colorado soon  . . .

Definitely plan on doing some DH too!  It's fun to hit the mountains during the events like Colorado Freeride Fest etc. as well:

For $350, I'd say get it.  No question it'll be fun.  (And I'm a big fan of both Fairdale and Taj).

At the same time, having spent the last 9 years riding mtb (dirt jump, ss xc, 4x, and DH) in addition to BMX . . . I think in terms of progressive 26" riding, you might get more out of a DJ mtb.  Or, you might get more out of a 24" BMX like a Sunday ModelC/WaveC if you really want to ride concrete park a lot, etc.

Although I definitely appreciate the Taj's early-80's-retro vibe, it's worth pointing out that it does have long chainstays and a low bb.   Progressive DJ-mtb's typically have around 15"-15.75" cs  these days, so 16.41" is long.  Also most DJ-mtb's are around 1" bb drop or even less (for example the TRANSITION BLT has zero bb drop while the PBJ has 25mm.  So, 40mm bb drop on the TAJ seems pretty old school--reminiscent of a Mongoose KOS or something.  The top tube on the Taj is 22.6"--so that's pretty comparable to a Large DJ-mtb.  A 71 degree head angle is pretty close to DJ mtb's--they are typically 69, 70, or 71, and steepen up a little if you run a short travel fork (80mm travel instead of 100mm travel... or a shorter rigid fork).   The now discontinued Volume Sledgehammer and Volume Hessian were more "progressive" for 26" (but I guess in the end not popular enough to continue making..... I have no idea where Volume is now--my impression is they bailed on 26"/700c).  All this said, I haven't ridden a Fairdale TAJ, and I'd be stoked to ride one and see what it's like.

You should probably buy it, regardless of whether you also pick up an mtb.
