The Bike Shop / Re: questions for front and rear brake users.
« on: January 20, 2016, 12:30:35 PM »
. . . . monolever small lever . . .

Short levers have less leverage.

If you're wanting to do one finger braking it's still better to move your lever in further on your bars, use a long grip, then grab the end of a longer lever, like Tech 77's.

The most important factors in bmx braking (in order of importance):

1. THE CABLE. Extremely-well lubed, non-kinked inner cable and non-kinked housing  (Linear etc. are great, but even old Odyssey Slic's work very well). FILL the housing with Tri-Flow or other lube.

2.  Brake lever that doesn't flex, and a long lever is better. Tech 77 = classic.

3.  Pads.  With certain painted rims, you do need a stickier/gummier pad.  Chrome rims do work better, but with the right pads, painted rims work well too.

The brakes themselves are less important.  True, some flex less than others, but even a cheap Dia-Tech Hombre can work amazing, if the things above are dialed in.

Also less important is cleaning rims and pads.  When people start talking about Simple Green, Windex, Coke etc., these are just band-aid issues.  Yes, clean surfaces do brake better. But, if you're needing to do this, you probably have a non-lubed kinked cable and crappy lever.

I have a black gsport birdcage rim. I had a raw flt rim before (the one with holes). My brake is perfectly adjusted. So far I have tried:

Clear Odyssey slim by four pads
Black Aztek pads
Natural (red) kool stop pads
Clear Fly pads

My brakes slip way too much. Guys from Odyssey said that all I needed was to clean my rim with soapy water. Ive tried that and it didnt work. I also tried with coke and same got the same results. They squeak and work for no more than 30 mins. After that they slip. I hate that. Got any tips?

I noticed you didn't mention the brake cable?

I've worked on dozens of bikes and brake setups, and although various things work slightly better or worse, the most consistent thing that seems to make the most difference is having a smooth-pulling brake cable with no kinks, minimize tight bends, and FULL of lube.

If you're talking about a front brake cable, then if you've used it on one bike then remove it and put it on another bike (or back on the same bike), it often works less well, because you've already kinked it where it comes out of the fork above the tire.

People often also have a kink in the inner cable close to the brake lever, as well as near the rear cable stop that goes to the splitter;  those kinks will weaken the pulling power as well.

. . . Id say 67.5% convinced of his innocence,  . .

That's interesting that you use a percentage.  I think of it that way also.

Many people do not understand what "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" means.  Some people think it means 100% certainty. It doesn't.   Courts leave it deliberately vague, and do not say what percentage of certainty constitutes "beyond a reasonable doubt" or said another way, what percentage of doubt a person has is "reasonable."   One person might think it means 75%, while another think it means 90%.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reasonable_doubt   People seem to change their idea of "reasonable doubt" depending on the severity of the crime or punishment. If the defendant can be sent to death row, a lot of jurors will think there needs to be more certainty.  This is why sometimes you have bifurcated trials where one jury decides only guilty/not-guilty (and are not given hints at punishment levels) and another jury decides punishment.

In civil trials (for money damages), the standard of proof is "preponderance of the evidence." This means "more likely than not" which essentially means 51% proof of someone's liability.

Honestly, who thinks they're gonna get a G-Sport wheel for $23.00? It is misleading, but you have to be a moron to think you are getting that wheel for that amount of $.

I didn't try to order it myself.

But, no I don't think you'd have to be a moron.  Huge online retailers sometimes sell old stock just to get it out of the way.  I've seen stuff on jensonusa.com marked down 75% from original retail.

This actually shows it to be marked down:

I messaged the seller, CyclingPros, and this is the response I got.

Hello,

I wish I could, but that is an error of Amazons ASIN system then, and not anything I can change.

The Bike Shop / Re: Does no one make <25t sprockets anymore?
« on: January 02, 2016, 05:46:21 PM »
Or 10t drivers either.
I am building up a 22", and it looks like I want to go with a 23-9, but I cannot find a 23t sprocket anywhere.

I used to remind people about 55-ish gear inches being the classic gear ratio for bmx.

44 / 16 X 20 = 55
25 / 9 X 20 = 55.5

But, it really seems like everyone who switches to slightly stouter gearing has no interest in going back.

So, for 22"s, I'd really suggest you just go with 25/9 X 22".  It's slightly less than 28 / 9 X 20".
28 / 9 X 20 = 62.2
25 / 9 X 22 = 61.1 gear inches

My 22" flatland build (in progress) next to 24" Tribute flatland

1996 Hoffman Taj and Stout 22

Indust Cuatro 24" and Idust 2ton 22" (with 28/9)

Pepper's 20", 22", and 24":

The Bike Shop / Re: Maglock magnetic pedals
« on: December 21, 2015, 10:42:46 AM »

Magnetic pedals would be interesting to check out.

I guess they couldn't really replace clip in shoes in mtb and road riding, because those require that you have a lot of resistance for pulling the pedal up... but then very little resistance when you do a different motion with your foot to unclip.... If the magnets were strong enough for you to pull up on the pedals, then it would also be very difficult to "unclip" or "unmag."

On a random-ish note, Pascal's foot cancer made me wonder if that's what Bob Marley died of.  Apparently he had a different type of cancer in his toe, but didn't get it amputated and ended up dying.

but what about answering my question, which is that , is there any truth behind bigger tire  - less psi - better bunnyhop?
i dont think so but..

Probably yes.  It's like a mini trampoline.   Also, there could be a mental component to it:  In street riding, if you're going to have a softer landing, you might hop harder/higher, because of subconsciously having less aversion to a harsh landing.

So what is the problem with the spindle?

Actually just google imaged it and the spindle has slits.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out exactly what problem those slits would cause.... and I'm guessing "torsion." The force of cranks on a spindle is to twist the spindle in opposite directions. . . . .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torsion_(mechanics)

So, I wonder why they're still on their website?
