Title: brakes and rims choices
Post by: Zoidberg on February 08, 2016, 01:34:40 PM
building up a new bike, yay

which of these would you have if they both were the same price and both used an oddy cable:

fly spring hanger with the fly manual lever or oddy evo2 and oddy lever

and:

sun envy (or any other suns) or proper microlite rims? or are there any other good but not massively expensive ones?

Fly brake stuff and Sun Big Ballers.

I'd go with the odyssey brakes and lever.

The fly brakes use a small diameter cable end in the brake arm. I'd go with Odyssey just because it's easier to find replacement parts.
Sun stuff seems dirt cheap nowadays. Dans was blowing them out for 20-30 bucks a while back, ebay prices seem the same. I'd try to find a city lite or something.

are pinned rims still no good even if they're triple or quadruple pinned?

my friend rode the odyssey quadrant rim with no problems.....you should be fine unless you're riding off roofs like Sean Burns

You'll be fine, unless it's not. Get a welded rim.

I would get the older fly cnc brakes if they can be found. I ride Eclat rear and I find them really good, so can recommend those.

Of the two choices, Odyssey would be my pick. Those Fly spring brakes are rubbish. Why not run the Fly lever and Odyssey brake?

Maybe check race oriented sections on mail order sites, usually sun rims floating around.

just made a little haul of parts i'm happy with and i've got half an hour to spare so i i'll get my geek on:

a mate on my fleet at work just bought a bmx and before he did he was asking me so i said i'd ask about a bit and i had a fair few parts i could put his way for cheep. so he went off and bought a built up loosefer off ebay for 120 quid and amazingly got it couriered for a tenner.

so following that 'had' off here, who i've previously got a barcode frame from, offered me a 2010 20.8 t1 ruben for 20 quid.

no brainer really, new bike for me innit bruv.

so here's what i had:

powerbites with ti spindle
duo pedals, left one stuck in
oddy vermont 30t
tube
oddy cable
macneil post
t1 8.25 bars
redneck xlt
new duo grips, fbm ends
aitkin 2.25

for 30 quid off paulie, i just got today:

fit shivs
front wheel from fit complete
snm tuffman 33t
mds 30t

spanish fly bb on way from alans, had to pay top dollar for this : (

plan on:

bluebird
using the fly headset from the other bike and replacing it with an oddy one
1.9 aitkin for the rear and hoffman seat for 15 each off winstanleys
running the 33t to 9t driver but will use a 30t if it feels shite
sharing the back wheel from my other bike until this gets one
oddy brake set up

swap the post with my other bike

new wheels in time, aiming for nice hubs and reasonable rims

maybe no pegs

leaning towards powder coating frame and forks black and taking off the rattle can black on the bars to get the original cream. everything else will be black. ninja bike

and plan to get it done by summer, it should be a nice contrast to my hamdog

if anyone has any shit to sell me for it, am listening!

current bits (frame is mint but pic is bad. glued in chain stay brake mounts):

hamdog (has three pegs, bit too short for the fourth and is 25/9 gearing):
