I grow orchids. I make hybrids, been instrumental in breeding rare species, I've had pictures in magazines and I have some in a legit hardback scientific book.

Currently my main focus is breeding this species, Dendrobium cuthbertsonii. I picked up on the work of a friend who is chair of computer engineering or nanofabrication at UC Berkley. He developed the protocol for tetraploid conversion in the species. In using mutagens the last couple generations and finally getting some undergrads to confirm 4N plants. Breeding these confirmed tetraploids is going to give me a good population for selective breeding. I have about 40 flasks growing in the lab currently. That accounts for like 5% or less of what I do.

I'm an account manager for an Event Technology company.

Basically we install internet infrastructure for temporary events.  We mostly do big music festivals, but also do corporate events, athletic events, and product launches.  We provided all the internet related services for the media, live stream, and on stage devices for the Amazon Kindle Fire launch a couple years ago.

It's stupid stressful, and I'm considering finding a new job.  I've got 65 jobs on the books for this year that I'm account managing and project managing, and am just getting really burnt out on it.

I go work some of them sometimes too.  Like I was on site in Chicago for 2 weeks for the NFL Draft this year working 16 hour days while I had mono...  and I did about a week on site at Firefly Fest a little while back.

Prodigal, you have a cool sounding job.

Reminds me of the horticulture teacher at my highschool.  We thought he was the un-luckiest man on the planet because he was shot in the hip in Vietnam, had one of his eyes pulled out with a fish hook and replaced where he was cross eyed, and had been struck by lightning 3 times... one of which times he was crossing a barb wire fence and fell and cut his testicles open...

Some of us found out after highschool that he wasn't exactly so unlucky, as he owned the patent for purple roses, and got paid as a consultant by several large farming companies to fly in and check out crops when they had problems.  The reason he had been struck by lightning so many times is that he spent so much time in fields and was the tallest thing around.   He was a multimillionaire and never told anyone at the school and drove a really beat up old truck.

I work at a high end american made cabinet company. We do new construction mostly and also squeeze a couple custom jobs in here and there.

Right now i am a department supervisor and am split between running the thermofoil department, which is my new gig and running back to work in the roughmill where I'm the #2 in charge... i like it but feel more comfortable in the mill. I can operate both departments on my own when needed wich is kickass.

Work for a small product design consultancy, though what we do is more engineering based, lots of injection mouldings, fabrication, mechanical design, electronics, etc. Most agencies will take an idea, loosely cad it up, visualise it and send you on your way, usually for it to fail at the production/compliance/management side. A lot of the work is medical at the moment since that's where the bigger money is, but get involved in pretty much every field from aerospace to dildos (really). The relatively unique thing about our co is that we oversee and manufacture stuff too, so we stay involved with projects from conception to wherever they end up. It's cool and a good ego buzz I won't lie, I get to work on an equal footing with some pretty impressive people, have my name on a tonne of patents and have done a bit of press and TV stuff. 'Glorified graphic designer' and 100% diva

I should get my bachelor's this year, and two more for a masters. So at least three. I actually would have gotten a job in a very prestigious firm this summer, but it was very last minute and I had already signed a contract in the bikeshop. I'm hoping to land a part time job this year, work experience seems to be much more important than school credits when it comes to finding a job after graduating.

Could be for temporary work. I know that some places here will hire someone on with a contract, that way the company can say "you're employed for this length of time, you get no benefits, we can fire you at any time, you will only make this much, etc."

That way, the company can hire you for as long as they need and once that contract is up, they don't need to pay you 2 weeks wage, or severance or whatever.

We've been trying to expand for headcount in high frequency trading, but all the good talent keep being sniped by the big investment banks/ other funds in the market. The fact that nobody has yet tried to poach me for the last two years probably means i'm not as good in the job as i see myself...

I can completely relate to this - our respective companies almost certainly have dealings with each other, I work for PR agencies and departments. Sadly we don't have as the same amount of perks but it's still a chilled out place to work. The PR world is such bullshit that I refuse to get stressed, compared to farming it's a joke. Half the job of a PR is to justify their existence to the wider company... Anyway, one day I'll do something useful.

Mind if I ask where at? My wife is an RRT.

Beaumont in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Damn dude! 1000+ beds? The hospital I am at has ~800 and is absolutely massive (I only work in the attached cancer center which is not that big). The wife is currently at a hospital with around 500 and she has no desire to work at any place bigger. Props to you.

Haha, yeah it can definitely be overwhelming at times. I've been there about two months now and there still isn't a day that goes by where I don't get lost for a moment. They just broke ground on a new ER expansion as well, so our emergency center is about to triple in size.

A lot of the work is medical at the moment since that's where the bigger money is, but get involved in pretty much every field from aerospace to dildos (really).

I'd like to get a replica of my penis made as a dildo, I presume a single picture of the real thing can get you started. Is there a way for you to receive the file? my email wouldn't let me attach a 1TB file since its so big

One size fits all PR/advertising/marketing account director at a large comms consultancy. Being 'creative', we have an entirely free bar in the office and all of the open plan, table tennis, hammock type of feel-good shit going on, which is alright.

My girlfriend is a surgeon in training and fuck me does it make me have days thinking 'what do I actually do' or visions of leaving the firm to go and chop trees down or build something, it is comical how different our respective 'bad day at work' stories are.

Haha yeah man, what company? Four Communications. I have sporadic visions of doing something else but then I think, actually I love what I do and am making a decent wedge, I guess the grass always looks greener...

I'm a bike mechanic at Halfords. Single mothers can bang on about how tough life is but its way harder being a white male living on 50p above minimum wage.
