Title: Smartphone or GoPro for lazy filming?
Post by: sans.terre on March 19, 2015, 06:57:14 PM
Hey gang,

I'd like to clock some footage just for fun this summer. Looking to do it as cheaply as possible. Homies say Gopro is pretty legit and has what you need to get started.

Do you think it might be even cheaper to invest in like a Samsung galaxy X and use the camera off there?
what are your opinions on the quickest/cheapest/best way to get started filming an amateur edit?

looking to spend > 200
i have a pretty decent laptop (lenovo t430u) that should be alright for editing id think. 4g ram, I5, blahvlah linux

You can do much more with a smart phone, but a go pro is cool as well, personally I use contour.

I know for the iPhone there are accesories to add fisheye to them. That way you can shoot long and fish.

i got an iphone fisheye, wide angle and macro lens set for $4 off ebay. only downside is you have to stick a little metal ring onto the phone to use them (it comes with the lenses though), so depends if you can handle having a phone with the metal ring stuck to it

theres cheaper gopro clones out now too which are like 1/4 of the price and can shoot full 1080. i doubt theyre as good as the real things but if your gonna compress to youtube anyway and dont wanna spend much, theyre ideal

I don't like my GoPro 2. Poor quality unless you have really good light. It's so terrible at lower light stuff. Maybe the new ones are better. I'd rather use a smart phone tbh. Plus you can see what you're shooting without the extra led screen backpack you need for the GoPro.

Yea I'd tend to agree with tom on the GoPros. I have a H3+ but the reality is it's a pain in the ass to use all the time, bring with you. Their pretty bulky compared to a pocketable phone. Find a decent case/stand mount for the phone if need be. I'm always shocked at how poorly full quality stuff runs on my computer, on my laptop, forget it. Even on my 32GB iMac it's not hard-smoothie.

This. Its fucking atrocious. Youtube auto quality defaults to 1080 on available videos due to (speculation) my internet connection, but no computer I have can play a buffered 1080 video without tons of stutter, making it unwatchable. My computer can play an emulated FF12(ps2 game) at 4x resolution with minor framerate drops, but it cant play an HD video from youtube.

If you like Apple, get an Eye-phone 6. If you don't, get a Samsung S6.

Im far from a videographer, but I would take a look at the fps. Imagine that the smartphones suck on that account. My samsung note edge films quite well, but for bmx? Who knows

iPhone 6 has 60 fps at full resolution, 1080p HD and 240 fps in slow-mo. That's crazy good for a phone.

As with anything, good lighting and composition makes the most difference.

I just bought a Sony Xperia Z3 compact. Fact is I think iPhone 6's and most phones today are too fucking big. I use the internet and my phone a ton, but there's no way to be subtle with a 5+incher.

Anyways this Sony is nice enough, it's waterproof, 20+ megapixel photos and shoots a 4K video. Expandable memory which yo iPhones will never have, and nice if you film lots and enjoy music or whatever.

This is all first impressions, but as someone who's used an iPhone since gen-4S I'm really liking this Android, customizable homescreens and widgets and shit. Takes some getting used to, but Go, Google, Go.

I'm annoyed that phones are so gigantic nowadays. They should've never got bigger than the iPhone 4 but thinner and lighter.

My friend's Experia has been sent off for repair twice in the few months he's had it having just given up altogether. Let's not start a pissing match, you can have whatever phone you like, yours isn't better than mine because you have it (my phone sucks too, still works though.)

I don't have to pee. I still use my iPhone 5, I bought this Sony 2 days ago. Just making a contrast about expandable memory, for what it's worth, a feature you won't get in an iPhone. Which is a shame because it's not like including a SD slot would be a huge, incalculable risk for them. My thinkin is that if you're recording at 1080p, that could be darn well near 200MB/min, and so if you want to record quite a bit of video, say a day trip or something, you'll probably want to spring for the 64GB. the price gap between 16 and 64 is more than the cost of a 64GB micro SD card.

I guess the point is moot though, because sans.terre wanted to spend $200 tops. Unless you're up for a contract renewal and not afraid of commitment? Then I think you're 6'ing at $200 with most US providers. Which means you'd also be able to get all but the newest of nice Android phones for free.

but this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzHhz6rJxH0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzHhz6rJxH0) feature puts it a bit closer to the GoPro.

Let me ask, are you a G-Mailing man?

yes, yes...i ...i am...

Well my Gmail is the oldest of the emails I still use, but I've been so impressed with the interfaces and things they keep rolling out. I basically enjoyed Googles stuff (Docs, Newstand, Maps, Drive) so much I decided to switch from iPhone. It makes me want to use my GMail more, even though it's longer to type. Full disclosure I study design and have read the google 'Material Design' manual (not that I do anything of that sort) and liked that shit. Android phones are pretty nice cause if you got a GMail account you're rollin. I think it's clean and now that I 'get' widgets I'm seeing some appeals over my iPhone.

I bet there are lots of really good phones out there for a reasonable price. The one I have shoots 20.3mp pictures (they're alright, but at a certain point without a good sensor it's just numbers) the video does 4K or 120fps at 1080. What I literally just noticed was that the camera app (vid and stills) has some 'manual' mode with white balance, exposure comp, couple 'Scene' modes preprogrammed. Nice for me because I have shoot with a Sony camera, familiar. Battery life is like avg 2 days or something and if you're lost in the desert you can switch it to some super-conservation mode to last nearly a week.

As of yesterday I've taken the memory card out of my GoPro and stuck it in this thing. Maybe I'll change my mind when I want to mount the camera on something.

I'm not saying this phone is perfect, in fact the first night I had it I tried to plug it in to charge in the dark. I ended up bending something in the SD card slot. That is what she hath said. The next day I exchanged it at the store. There's lots of Sony software on it that's a bit stupid. I think the Google Nexus/Motorola don't have it, but they are bigger screens too and lack lots of features. If you're not going anywhere in the next 2 years go see what you can get on a contract.
