Title: wow profile so innovative!
Post by: tim_sch on November 16, 2014, 01:07:43 PM
What was the problem of Profile hubs again? Yeah it was the hubs slipping in the dropouts instead of the huge amount of wobble!

Seems like a decent idea. I had a set of profile hubs on my last bike and they were great. Looking forward to purchasing another set for a new build I'm working on.

Wobble sucks, but was easy to fix.

I never had the slipping issue you mention.

But man, motherfuck the skipping.  Maybe I need new pawls or something.

Haha, I've had wobble on 3 pairs, the last pair I said fuck it, bored out the cones to the same dia as the internal axle never wobbled ever again still running the same set 2 years later perfecto ! But yeah they really should rework there tolerances its pretty sad since the customer has to "fix" them to get them to run properly.

So I had this issue where it looks like the driver was being forced into the hubshell, and the driver shim was crazy dished in and was digging into the driver bearing.  It started when I switched to Plegs and BSD hubguards, so my guess is that the loading on the peg was compressing the peg, hubguard and aluminum axle and smashing shit into the driver.

I switched to the steel female axle.  I expect that it won't deform as much as the aluminum and should sort this shit. It also doesn't seem to wobble (yet).

In retrospect, ya. You're right.  It made sense at the time.
I think I just wanted to brag on my shiny new steel axle.

Well, it's good information about issues people were having with profile hubs that were not addressed for 2015. Pretty sure that's exaxtly what the thread is about.

Profile hubs are dog shit, yet still I want another set. When they're good they're good. When they're not they ain't.

I switched to steel female axles, two sets of driver springs and the newer serrated spacers. I don't really have any issues with my madera hubs anymore except that they are loud as shit.

I also chose not to use them again on my new bike.  I just got Tree Hubs.

this isnt 2008, its all about having the quietest hub possible so its easier to hear your tyres squeaking when you do super kewl kickout skidders to slow down

I kinda like my bike to sound normal because it already draws too much attention just by being a raw Barcode.  Sometimes (most of the time) I want to show up at a skatepark and just quietly ride my bike, be introverted as fuck, and not be bugged with 50 questions.

"what kind of bike is that? did you weld it yourself? can you bar/whip/backflip? what hub is that? why do you have plastic pegs? wanna play a game of bike? Are those your kids? is your wife hot? T1 is still around? do you ride trails? have you ever been to blah blah? blahblahgpoegejqbobr2gryvg;hjv q gh1jtdsfqetv2rjgfb1orf"

(Fixed your post/quote for you)

100% agree too, if I go to a park I don't want to BS with a bunch of kids I don't know. I just want to ride my bike.

I used to have a fluorescent orange Funday with day glow yellow rims. That bike was awesome and I kind of miss it, but holy shit the attention it drew was not worth it.

All my bikes have been all black components with a coloured frame. Once I had red wall Odyssey tires. Another time I had a gray fork to match my gray frame. I'm bike boring.
