God Fucking Damn It.  This one is the winner so far.  It needs a double bolt seat post clamp and some OG Tenderizers.  That better be a chromo Rod as well.

The barcode is one of those idea things huh? It transcends minute geometric differences, manufacturers, and generations so that young men can grasp at homogeneity by means of that barcode wishbone.

I want in on the action. I bought both of these before Barcodes were even a thing. I worked in a bikeshop and my paychecks were often in the negative.
1999 Hoffman Lil Deebo. I bent the forks and a brand new set of Profiles the first time I took this beast out, that's why the forks aren't the OG green like the rest of the bike. The seat post is practically solid steel, it's a one inch post with a 7/8" insert all the way down. The whole thing was a boat anchor.

1998 Hoffman. I only had this for like a month. The chainstay dented like crazy after a few missed feebles, so I sold it. I should have kept this one, I've never seen another flat blue one. One of my favorite colors of all time.

I'm thinking sometime after the new year.. Hopefully.

so I don't want to piss off anyone of break BG rules with this question since I'm new to the site, but I grew up on a Barcode, and it's a shame that I have no pictures in this thread to show, but I've been considering having a custom Barcode made with some major geomtry tweaks (75 ht, 9.5 s/o, 13.5 cs, 21.5 tt), and keeping the double wishbone.

what level of hell would I get sent to for doing this?
Title: Re: The Bikeguide Barcode build-off thread
Post by: BilboBaggins on November 12, 2013, 12:26:22 PM
None.. I had intentions of getting a shorter cs one the s&m ones and so did a few other guys on here. S&m said it was a no go... I think you would have to sweet talk solid when they are not busy and maybe just maybe it would happen. Or fbm

circa 2003 at the height of its glory.
circa 2013 with some recently installed hand me down parts from my cleveland bike (8" T1 bars, T1 grey grips, fly brake, animal clamp, aitken seat, red cable, federal front tire and the fit s1 stem). the barcode stays with my folks in california for vacation time shredding. when i move back in august it's gonna get a makeover. i'll swap the tree 36t for one of my gower powers, add a raw T1 fork, another 2 T1 brown tipped pegs (if i find some), and some OG white downtube stickers i've stashed away for 10 years since purchasing the frame. also if the cyclops stem comes out in my lifetime i'll get one for it as well. maximum T1 components!

i got the frame off Had on here in mid Sept and literally just built it up tonight and taken it round the block and off a few curbs having finally got over some sciatic nerve nonsense.

might get some of those new plegs for it, or one for the front and put an old one from my tool box on the back and maybe put the big aitkin tyre back on the front. seems aiii tho

i know this isn't sell and swap, but seems like the place to mention it -

If anyone is interested I have a set of t1 medium bars (with the sticker) threaded and including tree bar ends. beat up but good.
also - a set of t1 forks. same - beat up but good.  both are black.

If any "collectors" out there want them just send me a pm and ill get you some pictures.

Billy, that picture is about a year old now. I had taken the fronties/pegs off and posted it for the Tree instagram to hype up that new topload stem, Moto bars, and the (at the time) prototype V2 steel sprockets. I think that whole pegless cassette setup lasted about a week and a half before I went back to normal.

I spoke to him early this AM and offered the same, £150, and imo that's a really good price for it, I bought a NOS Malyon Barcode last year for £50 and a NOS in the box FBM Nape frame for £20 so...
I got the feeling he wanted to hang on to it,
Nice frame, I'd love one just for the wall but I'm not paying through the nose for one,
Progression I would though,
Still have a sticker set waiting for one,

Pretty sure you can't get a pre-order thru T1, I was on the mailing list but I didn't have the $200 deposit when the orders were being taken.
Best bets on empire , no color choice but all the other options are open.

Personal experience with poor workmanship.

I've had 3 Maas made Barcodes and 2 Maas made Rubens. I've had 2 S&M made SFA's(along with a warpig, dirtbike, ng dirtbike, ng holmes, bennet, black bike, btm, numerous pitchforks, slams and hoder bars).

Both SFA's were so bad that I never got to even assemble them. The brake mounts pointed out and forced the arms to bind at any angle. The bottom bracket was visibly egg shaped. Tom at Empire and Joe Rich took the frames back and made it right. I still love T1 stuff, just not when they are made by S&M
Every handlebar I've ever seen come through the shop from S&M has had the crossbar significantly crooked. The old S&M's were good. The new stuff isn't straight or built with the quality or tolerances they used to be. I'd never buy another.

Nope, but building frames that can't accept "modern" sizes is risky in my opinion.

I can't say anything for certain (we could be measuring differently,) but from what I've read about the latest production sample of the Barcode frames, I'd pay attention to that rear end clearance and your tire choice.

I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I thought it would be pertinent to put my two cents in.

I feel like its an unwritten rule not to talk about your competition. Whether its good, bad, or neutral. That being said, tire clearance is important and I'm glad you brought it up. Lucky for me, I run a 2.0 in the back with an almost perfectly straight wheel because I'm OCD. My barcode should be fine. It would be interesting to see Dan's start listing tire clearance for each frame.

I'd love to see that. It's one of those things that doesn't get addressed by many companies and with the rise of 2.4"+ tires, it will be a courtesy to know that measurement.

But it is also the height of the tyre that matters as well. For example a 2.4' odyssey hawk tyre is nowhere near as tall as a 2.35" demolition momentum tyre. So it may fit between the stays but the height of it means it will rub on the bridges/wishbone.

Has anyone paid empire yet for their original preorder? I haven't since they said they would wait till they have the frames in hand. I'm worried my order is going to disappear

Patience is a virtue with T1 eh?
A few weeks back I made enquiries through their UK distro about a "22 top tube, welded chain stay mounts new barcode, thinking it wouldn't be a problem as S&M do customs anyways, offered to pay the full amount, up front,
6-8 month's waiting time, :)

Empire are sound, they'll sort you I'm sure,

I'm keeping my gob shut until those fucking vile erecto stems go out of fashion,

What's worse?

A) "Vile erecto-stem."

B) Too many spacers under your stem.

C) Ten inch plus bars.

D) All of the Above.
my bike ticks all those boxes

Just wanted to drop in and say that if you are worried about massive tire clearance on a Barcode, then you are probably not the intended demographic.

Is it just me or are a lot more people catching on to T1? I don't think the last run of SFAs were as popular as these are?(Could have not been paying attention)

Bob Scerbo's build. Wish they posted a photo built.

I feel like the Ruben, Hickerson, and SFA frames have been more readily available and are less iconic than the Barcode. I think it's been at least a couple of years since Barcodes were available in any significant quantity.

Barcode build #1 reaching completion.  Shout out to Sans.Terre for being French Canadian and hooking it up with some T1 Type-R forks.  That's what's up.  Also shout out to my hell pile in my garage for coming up with a 48 hole Chrome Hulahoop and a black 48h Big City and also a rear V-Monster.  Shout out to the dude who had 4 hole gold Tenderizers.  And shout out to the fact that he just gave them to me!!!

I have some black cranks lined up but they are not the OG insertless cranks.  So I guess shout out to anybody out there who has any insertless black Powerbites...holler at me!!  I somehow have been able to come up on multiple sets of insertless high polished (not a bad thing, I guess).

Also, I will continue to shout at my new (to me) 2010 Barcode that I will be building up to be put in with the regular rotation.  It's red.  So I know Tom is going to give it a shout out.

I am waiting on the last few parts to finish my 2014 Navy Barcode.  They should deliver tomorrow, so I will add a picture or two as soon as I swap the brake and tires out.  Here is a few of the slow progression to get it where it should be.

It currently has a set of the ugly Orange Odyssey Ross tires, but they are getting replaced now that I know the chep brake I had laying around will not work.

Here is my financee's brown 2006 Barcode:

The brown Barcode is my fiancee's bike and nothing will be changed unless she says so. ;D
I was talking about a spare set of orange tires that I put on the blue one (not pictured) until my new parts arrive.  Life got in the way of building the blue one the way I wanted to originally and I just pulled the Odyssey pomegranite parts off until I have slowly been able to order the parts I wanted.  If not for a trade with hboost, I would not have my wheels.  The maroon T-1 bars will be replaced as soon as I find a set of the black FBM Black Flag bars.

Thank you for the compliment.  Tammy and I love to be a little different with our bikes.  She loves to hunt and wanted a "doo doo brown" frame, the real tree Odyssey Dirt Fork, S&M Redneck, and orange Odyssey parts were just icing on the cake to her.  It has taken too long to get it to this point, but she says it is finished (until she sees some other part in real tree camo or brown/bronze).

So my custom barcode has been sitting in the corner of my room forever. I finally got a bottom bracket for it and I just now found out its a spanish. When did barcodes switch to spanish bottom brackets? Its really dissappointing as I have the fit 24mm cranks and they dont make spanish bottom brackets for those.. Looks like im not going to run the barcode for another year or so.

I guess I just figured since the barcode is the god of all frames, it would have a normal bottom bracket. Mid is all but standard on bmx bikes now. Don't get me wrong, it is totally my fault. I'm just disappointed that I waited several months and paid half a grand for a frame I will probably never ride now.

Skateparkrider, it's a bloody nuisance. I have to use a card reader and to be completely honest, I'm not sure I could be bothered finding the cable!

Do you guys have forks with brake mounts? Odyssey preferably.

I'll be over to you guys one of these days for small stuff like a chain and BB.  I gave my last bike away and haven't ridden in nearly 2 years and I'm being stupidly picky with this build.

Hugh, I planned my Barcode from the beginning and was going to be "picky" and only use certain parts.  Then when it arrived, I stripped all the parts from my ATF to see if I liked this version of the Barcode over the two I have owned, 2000 or 2001 and the brown 2006.  Ran into some money and slowly I have assembled my Navy Barcode with mostly new parts.  I still need to locate my real camera and take a few pictures as I believe it is complete for now until the Black Flag bars deliver.  I think the only parts that are not new are the seat, post, sprocket, and hubs, but these are items I would not change.

If Joe and I hadn't made a trade that ended with me getting my wheels, I was planning on ordering a set of Profile 48h hubs and lacing to a set of Odyssey 48h rims I had laying around.  I was going to mimic my old 2001 Barcode that Gordy now owns.

I'm gonna order the cyclops stem as soon as Empire has it. Might get a group order going for the UK/EU bikeguide guys if you want in. That way we can get less fucked by shipping charges ect.

I'm pretty sure it would cost more to post it from Ireland than it does from the US almost. If people are down for a group order, we could pool together and get them sent to my mum, no VAT and no customs charges, gotta love tax havens.

Almost finished just need brakes cause I'm not crazy like that. The bars do look ridiculous, but they make the bike super rider friendly. In my old age that's a nice compromise when riding.

I few months ago I bought a 2007 MAAS off a member on Museum.

Unfortunately when it arrived the head tube had pierced the box due to minimal packing, causing the bearing seat/lip to bend in.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/15432141095_e9db4ef6fe_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pvFKUc)
The previous owner had also been told me the frame was in excellent condition but he failed to mention a poor attempt at shortening the dropouts had happened.
Anyway, I cut my losses and sorted both issues.
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2941/15428951131_e174131bdf_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pvppCP)
The head tube came good with some gentle persuasion.
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2944/15245595927_ef556f83cc_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pecEwc)
I re-shaped the dropouts and neatened them up. It currently sits at 13.44". I know I'm going to cop it from all you guys but it feels awesome.

I stripped all the paint back and satin cleared it.

If I could have any Barcode, it would be one of those Barcodes.

I remember when those came out and it was a big deal because they had the lowered chainstays with low brakemounts and you could run smaller gearing with it.  There was an add in a magazine that had a picture with brakes and a 25tooth and I remember that being kind of a big deal with chainstay brakes at the time.  There was also a matching Navy Blue bars and forks combo that came out around the same time and I wanted those and one of these frames so bad.

Regrettably sold it complete on eGay in 2006.  Resourced everything a second time around and rebuilt it.  This is the way it looked in 2002,  and the way it sits today.  Learned my lesson, won't ever sell it again.

Two Barcodes I don't get the chance to ride. BG points on the S&M- Super Rat pedals, Native seat, Spev modded stem and a big sprocket. BG points on the Solid - HBoost's old frame (I think?), wobbly old GT cranks for all you Powerbite dudes and a very big sprocket.

Put some brakes and 2 pegs on that blue one and you have pretty much the perfect bike.

Looking tight dude. HBoosts old frame was a 2007 MAAS, I picked it up from him and am currently riding it.

I'm diggin the blue.  Whenever they do another run I think I'm gonna scoop a brakeless frame in whatever color they do that isn't raw.

I love this bike.  I keep trying to ride my ATF because the geo is more modern and I'm supposed to like it more, but it never feels right and I end up putting my barcode back together after a day or two.

28:9 seems a lil small for it. The CS seem lower and chainslap seems common. I'm going to move to 30:9 and see if that minute increase in diameter helps.

I'd add another vote for bigger gears (as in nothing under 30t if you'll have brakes on) but your mileage may vary. You could always try it out with a little piece of velcro pad if you're into that sort of thing. Definitely recommend some on the downtube for that obnoxious cable hanger slap.

Does 28-10 slam the back wheel?
Title: Re: The Bikeguide Barcode build-off thread

Does 28-10 slam the back wheel?

I'm running 30/10 and one half-link which slams on my '15 Barcode (13.75).  The sprocket is a little worn which helps out.  30/10 w a half link is equal to 28/10 for the most part.

A few years ago I had a S&M made SFA which had a 13.75 slammed rear end.  I tried 30/10 and 28/10 but could not get it to work.  It was just too tight. I think the fact that the sprocket, cog, and chain were all new had something to do with it.  I ended up running it at 14".

The 2015 Barcode is a hair under 13.75.  If you sand away the paint in the drop out slots, and make sure your chain alignment is perfect, you should be able to get 13.75 even with a new drive line.

Got a '16 on order from Empire. 21", raw. Anyone else grabbing a new one? Photos will be up as soon as it shows up.

I finally got my new Barcode today. It sounds like sand is in the seat/chain stays, the tubes are closed so it can't come out. Anyone else have this issue?

Here's my new Barcode!

It seems to be built better than my 2007 SFA it replaced. The BB and rearend tolerances are much better. On the SFA, the BB spacer was too short and didn't really function. The rear end length seems to be more dialed, to where I can actually use my nice Profile 3/8" to 14mm adapters. The SFA rear end was way too tight to run them on both sides.

I actually have two of the Fit Series 2 stems. I got one from a local that beat the hell out of it with a hammer. My good one will probably replace it on my old bike.

Here's a current pic of my bike. I haven't had much time to do any riding other than around town with my 6 year old son. That should change soon now that winter is here. I usually drive to an indoor park. Maybe I'll actually scratch it.

Quite a bit of new parts.
-Odyssey Dugan pedals
-Tree OG sprocket
-T1 Cyclops stem

and I went back to my old Fly seat set up.

I picked this frame up off this site right before my last foot surgery. Had to trade my old 2014 for a 1911 .45 to give to my dad to repay him for the rent he spotted me after my short term was discounted more than I was told.  The wheels have been an ongoing project that I never could get true and only recently was able to get my friend to help fix my mistakes. I've had them since the 2014 frames started delivering.  The bars, cranks, and bottom bracket came from old bikes that o parted. The fork was the right price wrong color, but at least I can ride again.  The rest of the parts are new.

I've just located and purchased my first barcode frame.

2004 eurocode with seatstay mounts, I sold it 11 years ago and can't wait for it to arrive.

That bike looks crazy good.  The gold seat post actually sets it off in a good way.

You trimmed the dropouts and went shorter on the rear end IIRC?
