Since Spam seems to have been cut down to acceptable levels, I have been asked to free up Gmail for people to use to register with.

If it gets bad, I will re-enable the block.

You could use @googlemail.com before, it'd still come into your Gmail account just the same.

Visitor message spam is getting pretty crazy, maybe this should be changed back.

It's one Chinese company that found a hole and had nothing to do with Gmail (they have 270+ domains of their own).

I just put a hurt on them, so it should slow down.
