Congratulations. Kids are awesome.

Everyone will want to give you masses of advice and often the most vocal people are those who had bad birth experiences.. try not to let them get to you.  All that really matters is to be relaxed about it. Just try to enjoy it all...

The thing is, that when you are in your mid 30s or whenever with kids you will wish you had them earlier because they are so much fun... Changing nappies etc really isnt a big deal...

I'm getting ready to turn 23 myself in the near future, and figure that kids are out of the plan for at least 3-4 more years or so.

I have 5 nieces/nephews aged 4 or below, so I definitely can appreciate the little buggers and how awesome they are; I just need a few more years to get my shit together and actually have the time and money to properly spend with/on a child.

Being a dad is fun, you get to play with toys again.

My second baby was born saturday. We have a little boy and a girl now so we're stopping there. The first birth experience was very traumatic. The hospital messed up and had to get a cesarian. The second was a all natural home birth and it felt like that is the way babies should be born.

I can see myself being a terrible father, I would probably just fuck with them and teach them the alphabet backwards and that red means go and green means stop. I probably wouldn't have kids very long.

One kid's easy, assume you have supportive parents and people youd trust to look after it? Provided you do, you can still keep your social life alive and it wont change much.

Dont be tempted to have any more...

I used to think that way. Now I couldn't imagine having a kid.

I mean not to harsh on anyone with kids but at my age, the way I conduct myself, a kid would completely negate my way of living. I enjoy going out drinking and hanging around being dumb far too much to have a kid.

Now that I've passed the age where I anticipated a kid being a part of my life I couldn't imagine giving up what I've got for a child. Too much fun exchanged for too much responsibility.

A home birth would give me the chills. What if something does go wrong (wrapped around umbilical cord...). Then you are pretty screwed. Id like to go to the hospital just for the sense of security.

They would do exactly the same thing that they would do in hospital and unwrap it.

I am not suggesting that it is good to forgo modern science. Have the scans, take the advice of the midwives etc, but going to hospital can CAUSE problems in otherwise healthy births. The MOST important thing is for the woman (who is the one who will actually DO everything) to be relaxed, its hard to relax in a hospital. It is very common for women to go into labour and then stop when they reach hospital because they are "stressed". In the wild an animal seeks out somewhere it feels SAFE to give birth, if a lion turns up they can stop and run. A useful evolutionary advance. But for most humans this instinct to stop can cause a lot of problems...

I dont understand why people want to ruin there girlfriends body by letting her dump a kid out her crotch. Its even worse when they get the C-Section and the skin is all flappy. ewwwww!

Ive just seen enough people my age have kids and its awful. They start giving up on going out and getting wasted and talk about there kids all the time and want to show pictures of them to everyone at work. I sometimes feel like grabbing the pic they show me and ripping it half and tell them to snap out of it, they arent the onlyones with kids. There is nothing special about you or your family. I dont care what you had to clean up at 3am, or how you "had a funny when makig the baby formula".

Give me your address and I will come to Florida in 8 months and show you some pics. Please... I beg you, rip one up. As far as the people giving up on going out and getting wasted, its called being a responsible parent. I have been married for 3 1/2 years and trust me, I have done my fair share of partying but you have to grow up eventually. You will see man.

A lot of people think having kids means you have to "settle down."   Some dads give up their 'old life' and settle in. Others don't give up anything and stay on their own mission.

Check out this documentary Surfwise.  It's on Netflix.   Strange and interesting. . . .

"Legendary surfer, Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz, abandoned a successful medical practice to withdraw from the lifestyle of mainstream America. But unlike other American searchers such as Thoreau and Kerouac, Paskowitz took his wife and nine children along for the ride, all eleven of them living in a 24-foot camper. The family spent their days living by Doc's rules on health, fitness, sexuality, and above all surfing. The Paskowitzs' prove that America may be running out of frontiers, but it hasn't run out of frontiersmen. "

thanks for the kind words guys! the only difference that i have noticed is the amount of love i have for him. i never imagined someone could mean this much to me. i'm so proud of my wife too. she delivered him naturally and in a little under 5 hours which is amazing for a first child. oh and gamlin, i actually went to school with a guy named benjamin dover.

Congrats man.

Would be rad to have a dad that rides BMX.
Must be good to know you have someone to pass on your name.  Treat him right.

because the idea of continuing your linage for the sake of a name (and all things associated with it) perplexes me. How we get the concept that we need some sort of permanence in time and go about that by having a child for the rest of humanity to know we have existed is a terrible thing in my eyes.

Had I come from a family that had altered history much more than they have, it might be different. I don't hold close to that chance though, for as that pattern of thinking goes our genetic hubris at best should begin with ourselves. We've all been there though, "you're his brother?" "I can't believe I'm meeting a celebrity's child!". Count me out of the crowd that wants transcendence from the grave.

I can tell you that one of the most awesome moments i have ever had was riding with my kids for the first time! I love it when they ask if we can go to the track or the trails....

I come from a family with no real 'celebrity linkage', however, i hold pride in my family name, and no its probably not superior, but i'd also hate to see it dye off.
Is it the main reason i want a kid??  Shit no.
But its something that should make you proud in the grand scheme of things still.

I know this thread is very old but this is the place to post this. My son is now four and his favorite thing in the world is to go to the skate park and pump around the bowl on his strider. It is awesome to be able to share BMX with my son. He has pretty good park etiquette too.

I've taken my nephew to the park and he doesn't understand he can't take infinity bowl runs. Nor does he understand how to pump either. Consider yourself blessed I think!

Haha my wife doesn't understand that either even though she has been with me forever and seen her fair share of skate parks. Trust me, I use the term pum loosely.

Dude, you sold me a T1 SFA frame like 5 years ago. I don't ride as much as I used to but when I do that is the frame I am shredding on. Probably the best BMX purchase I ever made.
