Title: Fixing removable brake hardware
Post by: JFax on March 09, 2015, 03:00:21 AM
So I accidently tightened the tiny little bolt for the cable guide on my toptube and tore the threads out from the frame... The cable guide wouldnt sit firmly fixed, I felt like it had a slight wobble, hence the over tightening.
I tried fixing it with epoxy but it didnt really do the trick.

I guess I could try to re-thread the threads, but dont think it would be that stable, as the original already tore off. Any of you guys got a better trick to firmly fix the cable guides to the frame?

Maybe a pop rivet?

3m makes plastic adhesive guides that work great

I'm not sure that's the right size/thread pitch, but I CBA to look it up right now.

What is that? Helicoils? New threads you put in?

Came in to recommend a helicoil as well if the threads are pulled out completely.

Is this a cable guide (just holds the housing in place) or the cable stop (end of the housing and takes the braking force)?

Cable stop.

Surely the tube won't be thick enough to helicoil. I stand by pop rivet.

At least on FBM made frames, the stop threads into a welded-in insert that has ~5-6mm of thread. That may be enough for a small helicoil.

Ive seen some good rivert uses in my day. If it can be done that is provably the way forward. I have no idea how to do it though. Prob ask at the bike shop. Thanks guys!

What kind of frame do you have?
You could simply tap a thread in the other hole and spin the stop around.

yeah, you drill and tap it to some larger size, then thread in an insert the original size.

S&M also uses a little welded in plate that is most likely thick enough to heli-coil.

This is a pop rivet with built in threads for a water bottle cage. (http://"http://www.cycle-frames.com/bicycle-frame-tubing/NOVA-SS-REV-NUT-FOR-H2O-BOSS-FOR-ALUMINUM.html")
You may be able to track one down that is the right size for the cable stop screw.

Link doesn't work for me but I came here to recommend a Riv-nut/nutsert too...
