Kye Forte is currently running this: http://instagram.com/p/ye0wRnq8IS/?modal=true
http://canyoudigitbmx.com/kye-fortes-unusual-setup/
Worth trying, or would it feel shit?
-
it would mellow the head tube angle a lot and raise the bottom bracket.
It seems like it would be wonky but he seems to rip it up just fine.
-
Reminds me of the the old mtb builds with 26 front and 24 rear. People ran them for years
-
^and 26/29 as well...
-
This is something we've talked about doing in the shop a lot but always thought it was a bad idea haha. Also whether or not we could get a 22" wheel in the back of a MacNeil Deuce Deuce...
Maybe it's worth a shot? It looks like it makes sense with a smaller bar.

I would prefer the other way round, first because her ass would pinch the nuts and second the dick is easier to clean.

Mismatched wheel sizes on bikes is so stupid.

That was goofy too.
-
looks super goofy, if he likes it whatever. kye forte (and his brothers) shred
-
Had an instsgram comments stalk and it said something about it being easier on his bad back.
-
If that's what he likes, who am I to say he shouldn't ride it...
-
should just get a full 22 setup i reckon
-
Looks interesting. That setup worked somewhat well on MTBs but was mainly used to run a fat tire (2.8-3.0) in the rear, while keeping a similar diameter to a regular front tire (2.5-2.75).

I hope there is a really low slung frame with bars like Ben likes. Immediately to justify it because it's good for their backs.
-
I have a bad back. Haven't been able to ride in about 5 months because of it. I had back surgery about 7 years ago. I know about back pain.
I don't know how this set up would do anything for my back. Seems like the front end would just be super choppered and slow feeling. The distance between the pedals/grips would be the same as a 20 inch front end. just higher up. Seems like taller bars would be better for a taller stance, for ones back. ?
I do have the parts to do this though so maybe I'll throw it together and see how it feels. Although I'll only be able to pedal around the 'hood. No bunnyhops or anything.
-
The amount of people who said "Ahhhhh my back, I need big bars."
Everyone knows the truth is no one wants to be left out because they have 8.5" or smaller.
-
I personally found that smaller frames helped my back more than any other bike part. You don't have to hunch over as much when you're in a manual or mid bunnyhop.
-
a little reminder that i stand 6'6 tall, before everyone starts bashing my handlebar preferences yet again. if i was a shortarse id be all over scerbos cos theyre my favourite looking bars.
i wonder about frame lengths these days like brooklyn rider said too, seems like at least 90% of people are riding 21+ tts these days with back ends that are shorter to compensate. i reckon some of the shorter guys would benefit from a slightly shorter frame so theyre not so stretched out and hunched forward.
personal preference though, everyones bodies are so different, you have to go with what feels best for you

You can get a 22" in the back end of some 20"s that have long dropout slots. See these:

Of course, it's much better to have a frame and fork designed for 22"s.

There's a new Deuce Deuce as well.. a little MacNeil revival? Bars and other stuff too.
Would love to try a 22". There really aren't many completes are there? One I went to off a guide had their website gone haha.

Would be very happy if 22 took off.

Mismatched wheel sizes on bikes is so stupid.
Why?
In this instance, the BB will be raised and any height in the bars will almost entirely be negated by that. It's a non solution. Get bigger bars, or ride a 22" bike.
Even when a frame is designed around mismatched wheels, it doesn't solve anything, in my opinion. For instance, the obsolete 69er MTBs might allow a rider the ability to barrel over terrain with the 29" front wheel, while affording him better, tighter corner capabilities with the 26" rear wheel. However, some tweaks to the frame geometry--like a short rear end, longer effective top tube, lower BB height, etc.--will give him the same advantages with two equal sized wheels. Also, carrying two different sized tubes is a pain in the ass.
That's my basic interpretation, anyway. I feel like the only place for mismatched wheel sizes is on cargo bikes.
-
one of the best bikes I've ridden was purchased with a 60mm fork (mtn bike). I put a 100mm fork on it and rode the living shit out of it.
So, if it works for ya, go for it.
22 front/20 rear ain't new. They came from the factory like that in the late 70's.
-
...
Sorry I don't have enough time right now to be more specific:
The BB will only be raised by a fraction of what the bars are, as it is nearer to the fulcrum than the front end but you're not entirely wrong
Frame geo tweaks can't do all that different wheel sizes can (eg: a bigger wheel will always deal with bumpier terran better), but you're not entirely wrong
A personal ancedote I wouldn't mind going down an inch or 2 in the rear on my own bike. The front can stay at 20" for dirt but a smaller wheel on the back would definitely help my tech/flat game where angular momentum is a big deal (and give more room for the crank/CS/tire area where they all vie for space). The front can get over bumps nice and fine when I ride dirt and the rear can just monster truck over shit

Good point.

From a different perspective . . . a Sunday Wave C with a 22" fork and 22" wheel:

Here's a regular 20" Holmes with a 22" fork and 22" wheels...

Back in 2012, "teachbmxcharlie" wrote: "The bb height is close to that of my 24" Dirtbike, b/c the custom 22" forks on the 20" frame raise the front-end and bb height slightly. The height measures between 12 and 3/4" and 13" even, making the bb height a little taller than desirable--but OK for a quick custom."

That was before the 22" Holmes came out:

22 front 20 back looks fun as fuck for trails. good thing being that once the front wheel is off the ground, the bike's already at a geometry you're quite used to. i reckon it'll only take 20minutes to get used to it... well, for me anyway since i don't have that many tricks
