The Bike Shop / Re: Odyssey Elementary Rip Off

Wow. 3 oz. I say its fair game to rip it off as odyssey no longer makes it.

Yeah?  When did they stop making them?  Seems a shame, considering the innovation and work that went into it.

The Bike Shop / Re: Chris Froome; Doping?

I race road.  I race at E1 level, which is 1 level below Pro Tour.  The speeds in E1 are similar to that of Pro, but the 'Tours' are way shorter, and in comparison to Pro riding, we don't go in as hard.

The main thing I can say, from my experience racing, and seeing how my own body reacts to the stresses of going in so hard, is this...

-A top level guy who is not doping, could match the speed and power of one of these world class pro tour guys, in a single day event, but he would be utterly wrecked at the end of it and would need a good week to recover.
-Pro tours are 3 weeks long.  There is no FUCKING WAY they are going in that hard, for that long, and with only 2 rest days, without chemical assistance.  I don't care how much they train, or how elite they are, the human body simply can not take that much abuse, both in terms of pure physical stress to the muscles, and also throwing that much water and food through your system day in day out, without blowing up after at most, 10 days.  It just can not be done.

Whether they are all on straight EPO or not, I think is doubtful.  Probably not nowadays, as that is too detectable, and obvious.  I think what is happening nowadays, is they are doing way more sophisticated stuff like micro-dosing the training, then switching drugs around, etc., to achieve the same end.  The doping process has basically become more refined.

So yeah, of course they are doping, but not in the same way as when it was full on EPO jacking.

Define 'fast'.  I don't feel the difference on my road wheels when I switch from a 1400g pair to a 950g pair, until I get above about 35kmph.

Bunny hopping, and any trick that derives from that must be easier with a lighter bike, but rotating weight on a slow moving, small wheeled bike...   I don't buy it.

Why is rotating weight an issue on a BMX wheel?  lolz.  You are not climbing l'Alp d'huez on it, time trialling, or riding it like a road bike in any way whatsoever.

Nice one cheers.  I think I get it now.

So...  how does the length of the lever affect the readings and why have you gone for exactly 100mm?

EDIT; hang on, is that because 1nm = 10kg / cm, and having a 100mm (10cm lever) would divide the total by 10, meaning that a 1kg reading would actually be 10kg of torque / 1nm?

I think that is right...

Depends what torque you want to hit. If you want to be able to hit low values like 4Nm for stuff like carbon steerers it is best to have a low range one, (I actually just have allen keys with washers welded on the end, and pull using a digital scale, which is much cheaper and very accurate).

:)
G.

Care to explain how you do that measuring using a digital scale.  Sounds genius, but I can't quite figure out what you are doing...

anyone worked with carbon before?

just impulse purchased a bunch of carbon fibre cloth and tubing. gonna have a crack at building some small accessories for some of my bikes, and the big project which will be a pair of lightweight racks for my road bike so i can do some light touring this summer. haven't messed about with much anything in a while so I'm itching to get dirty.

I have repaired a carbon frame using carbon sheet, if that counts...

Got a fresh pair of locking Tech-77's. Tomorrow morning I'll bend them to my liking and get the rest of my brakes sorted.

I used to love bending Tech77s.  Are you also going to file out the part where the lever meets the main body so you can run it really far down the curve of your bars, late 90's style?

Fitted my new Deda Superleggera/Superleggero bars and stem a month ago, and the shape was different to the previous bars I had on there, so have been spending the month tweaking.  Finally got things right.

Also, my rear wheel that I built finally settled in so I can stop fiddling with it.

Nice.

Whole bike is sub 6kg now, which I can really feel on mega steep climbs.
