The Lounge / Re: New Random Thoughts Thread
« on: May 26, 2015, 08:51:37 PM »
often though about this , but what if no one else really exists what if im the only person who is actually real and everything else is some kind of illusion my mind has made up?

could be true  :o

Then really it doesn't matter either way if the difference is imperceptible. I appreciate that this wouldn't help you, but I know your belief about your own mind is untrue, even if you don't. I know my mind exists, so I can conclude that your mind can't be the only thing in existence.

The endurance of solipsism is a perfect example of how people can get stuck on the outcome of a logical argument, even when the conclusion is relatively absurd. I feel quite happy to disregard the idea on the simple basis that there are many things in the world that I don't understand at all. If the only thing I can verify the existence of is my own thoughts, then I struggle to see how I could think up things that no amount of those same thoughts can actually comprehend. The only way for that to be possible would be if there was a duality of mind/another strata of thought. Using solipsistic reasoning, there's equally no reason to believe in the other strata of thought, as there's no way to comprehensively verify it. It's always struck me as quite self-defeating.

There is a policy comparison website, asks you a bunch of questions and tells you how much you line up with each party

Based on the one I used I suppose I should be voting Lib Dem really, I got 50% for their policies, 30% labour and 20% conservative. Is lib dem still a "wasted vote" though? Suppose it's one against UKIP so that's something.

It's a wasted vote in the sense that their manifesto may as well be written in disappearing ink and hidden at the end of a rainbow. Got in power and toadied up to Cameron, turning their backs on everything that made anyone vote for them in the first place. They're almost worse than the Tories. At least the Tories don't try and pretend that they're not cunts, which is about the only thing approaching respect I can offer their way.

Fuck that, I'm looking after myself

I'm willing to bet that touching sentiment would even stir a flicker of life in the lump of coal that resides in the chest cavity of your ham-face overlord.

I'm debating getting a hardtail and I have almost no idea what I'm looking at. I'm mainly going to be using it for getting to work and dicking about on the South Downs. Here are my vague requirements:

 - 26" or 650b (29" is just too big for my liking)
 - 17/18" frame
 - Not an absolute tank
 - Not shitty forks
 - Solid feeling cranks
 - Durable drivetrain
 - Reasonable brakes (disc) that need minimal maintenance
 - Under about £550
 - Would prefer to buy new, not second hand

Find me a bike, BG.

P.S. Does remote lockout on forks actually work properly? It would come in handy if it does. Mechanical or hydraulic discs? What brands/components should I definitely avoid?

What makes everyone say it doesnt help as a deterrent.

I am quite the law-abiding citizen, I just jaywalk alot. If they would implement the death sentence as punishment for jaywalking I will be sure to stop doing it...

All the people that commit crimes that (legally) warrant the death penalty show that it's not enough of a deterrent.

That's a shit analogy. How often do you jaywalk in a fit of rage, or in an extreme case of desperation or panic? Do you jaywalk because you're mentally unstable, either from a chemical imbalance in your brain, or from some sort of psychological trauma?

Killing someone is widely considered to be the number one crime. I don't know how you're supposed to have any faith in a legal system that legally sanctions and commits that very same act.

Putting someone to death serves no purpose whatsoever. Outside of revenge, there's no gain from it and no legal system in the present day is based on "an eye for eye" type thinking because it's both childish and barbaric when taken to its ultimate conclusion. And what if someone is later to be found not guilty, having already been put to death? Try the legal system for murder? They would have committed the most serious crime against an innocent member of their own society. Who then is culpable?

I want these pretty bad. It's a shame they're like 200$.

Just nick some spindles from an old set of pedals and you could make them for next to nothing.

I don't ride anymore, so I doubt I'll add to this list unless I can win the lottery and buy some new robot knees.

- Huffy MJ12. Weighed more than me and I still mullered it.
- Commencal Locale. Beautifully balanced and I loved it. Regrettably swapped for...
- Federal Nation. An unwieldy tank and I hated it. I think I may actually have thrown it away.
- Volume Flatline. Too long for me. Rode it for about four years, until it felt like home. Stolen.
- Wethepeople Addict. A reasonable complete.
- Wethepeople Phoenix. The absolute tits. This kept me riding for about another year, when I definitely should have stopped. Wished I could have kept going, if only to ride it more.

Can you 'drive' it when you're stood in it? Looks fun for precarious dodgems.

Try now. This is the only time I've ever got it to work. Maybe it's been fixed.

I tried and failed to find that picture. I did find this one, so not a wasted search at all.
