Agreed! His can I eat section got me so stoked on riding. He was my favorite person to watch and still is.
He looked like a proper college kid in that section, kinda like a math tutor or something haha

This might be his best out of all his video parts. At least to me.
All Day (http://vimeo.com/2867036) is also definitely up there
Can't forget his Federal (http://vimeo.com/6428194) part
There used to be a good quality version of his A Day Late, A Dollar Short (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJwcagPnCe0) part on Youtube but unfortunately now there's only the damaged VHS copy left.
I really enjoy it when there are the same spots in all video parts but each time the rider has found a new way to use the spot so you can see how the person has progressed and there's also a sort of familiarity aspect to it.

You're dumb, that song is fucking awesome and it fits the part so well.

Haha!
Its alright.
-
Anyone got pics of him riding at the FBM ghetto jam that he won? That was my first experience of him, and it was a good one

Me and my brother have some footage of him riding street from last summer. I'll need to convince him to capture it.

Is Steven Hamilton the Charlie Sheen of BMX? Or Is Charlie Sheen the Steven Hamilton of Hollywood?
-
does he even ride for federal anymore?

hamiltons too good.
we should start having monthly rider apreesh threads
I like the idea of this!
I've had the song to his can I eat section in my head since I saw this thread last night, only diary of a madman has suited a section more. I ride pretty differently to him but he was a pretty inspiring rider to watch, those curved wallrides to ( insert a degree of spin ) were so smooth and mind blowing when he first became known.
He really added a different aspect to street riding that wasn't yet popular/known. Back then a pegless rear brake street rider was surely unheard of. And he fully deserves an appreciation thread.
-
I see him out all the time. He was just down at the little OSU skatepark the other night. He's pretty kooked out to be honest and seems to skate more than ride but hopped on a friends bike and immediately started shredding like he never missed a beat. He was definitely an innovator of street riding and sort of pioneered a whole new style of riding (pegless). Bums me out sometimes to see him stragglin along and have seen him begging for change but oh well. Dude will always be a legend.

I really doubt he's in school. I've seen enough of him to not want to get real close. Something about Columbus and BMX pro's doesn't work. Steven, Ian and Eli. Oddly all friends at some point.
-
Steven used to end up hanging out on the porch of our old (NickS) apartments all of the time. Mr. Hamilton hung out at the bar across the street and my roommate and I would constantly call him over and talk about the most random subjects. Our friends (Arnold Palmer/Cat) were having a party one night and I walked over there to find Steven wearing a winter coat in 90 degree weather telling me to "embrace my inner black bear and climb the tree in the front yard."
He also told us a story about doing the OSU curved wall on his "barspin bike" to barspin. His "barspin bike" was apparently a beach cruiser and according to what he had to say it was the only bike that he could ever do barspins on. Supposedly, he was going to shoot an ad for Federal doing so but someone stole the bike when he was drinking one night because he forgot to lock it up.
And so as to not disappoint. I dug up these pictures I took of Steven doing a decent sized table over a decent sized hip at The Flow circa 2002 (possibly 2001).
Unrelated to Steven... Nick, you forgot Shanton Wilson. One time pro living in Columbus that no longer rides.
-
about 1:20 in theres footage of him riding some wet underground pipe/tunnel
http://vimeo.com/8565721

I'd love to see a documentary on him. As said as it is to hear where he has ended up, it would be very interesting to hear about from his perspective. I also wonder if he is one of those people who knows his life is a wreck, or if he is just perfectly content living that way. Maybe knowing that so many people still look up to him for his riding would pursued him to get back on a bike and turn his life around, or maybe thats just wishful thinking.
-
I wonder if he ever reads threads on BG about himself...
also, what happened to him? cause apparently i'm the only one on BG who doesn't know.

I want that magazine right now, do you send it out free with orders?
Watching all the videos posted it really blows me away that his level of riding is so high in all of them, especially when the 3 of the biggest ones are filmed around the same time as each other, and he managed to keep it original as fuck.
The video at the bottom of page two where he rides that rail is pretty good, some really sick variations on that.
-
The picture I posted must be the most realistic depiction of him at this time.

To put it as simple as possible..drugs.
That, and I believe he is also brain-injured. I had read somewhere that at a local house party he was given the boots pretty good.
Everything I have heard/read sounds exactly like a friend of mine. This friend was an amazing athlete, shy, drinking at a booze can, talking to a girl when said girl's boyfriend flew into jealous rage and boot stomped him with his friends.
In the years since then, my friend had told me that sometimes, he just didn't 'feel right', like he was experiencing things, but just not remembering them. All sorts of odd behavious--combined with drug use led to some of the most entertaining and sad behaviours.
I feel bad as drugs are seemingly his and Steven's 'escape' from their pain.
Brain injuries are no joke. Combined with drugs....
-
maybe he just knows how to party harder

One of my favourite riders of all time ever. Always has been.

Ah, damn. I'm guessing the (currently) bad link on Issuu is what you're talking about?

recent hamdog interview from the federal site (http://www.federalbikes.com/09/?page_id=156)
some interesting stuff about what hes been up to (psyched hes listening to the b-52s lately), and also about "that" interview in the albion
-
That read like hes going to make some career moves, which would be awesome, since he has proven his awesomeness over already.
-
bmx world builds up a ton of hype and he is really just a pretty normal dude. profit.

Dude's a goon, but an awesome goon nonetheless.

some interesting stuff about what hes been up to (psyched hes listening to the b-52s lately), and also about "that" interview in the albion
He seems relatively normal in this interview. Honestly, the dude that wrote that Albion interview seemed like a kook anyway. I think all the hype that surrounds Hamilton falling off of bmx is stupid. He's just not in the spotlight anymore like he used to be (you could say the same about tons of other riders as well) and the "he's fucked on drugs all the time" shit is dumb too. Just about everyone does drugs or has done them at one point in their lives. Get over it.
-
yeah ive already said this like 5 times on here, but that guy they sent to interview him seemed like a clueless douchebag
It’s been just shy of 12 months since your Albion interview. Were you happy with that interview, it’s very different to most BMX interviews?
No not really. I haven’t actually seen it but my friend took pictures of his and e-mailed it to me so I could read it and I didn’t really like it. When he showed up to do the interview he said he didn’t know it snowed it Ohio. I thought that was funny. I had never met him before and he wanted to stay at my apartment so I tried to freak him out a little bit. I stayed up all night and shaved one sideburn, I was glad that got printed I thought that was funny. There was a couple of other jokes I was able to get printed too since he knew nothing about me. As far as the riding goes, I think I would have done better if I would have had brakes. I had recently built that bike up and hadn’t put my brakes on yet. I thought the table top photo was pretty cool and he didn’t mention that I normally do tables the other way and I had only recently started doing them that way. The photos of the interview my friend sent me were black and white and that photo looked good in b&w but I guess the interview is in color. There was a apart I think right before the “the kind is dead” (haha) part about me hitting the curved wall-ride. You have to remember it’s cold as shit out, I have to gap into the wall over the snow ( it isn’t shoveled inside the wall ) instead of just riding into it like I normally do, and I’m brakeless. I thought is would be a cool photo because I’m curved wall-riding over snow, I’m pretty that was opposite too and I x-upped out of it. I thought it would be a cool photo wall-riding over snow and with the x-up, I’m sure he wanted the opposite to 270 but I just wasn’t up for it in the snow that day. Also remember not everything you read in a magazine is true. There’s a number 12 on my door and there always has been, I have no idea why he said there was no number on the door. There was a part where I said something about being in the dessert and there’s no one around, for some reason I feel like I never said that. I wish he had used one of the million paper pads and pens in my cluttered apartment and taken some notes because I know he didn’t print a bunch of the stuff we covered which I think would have made for a good read, or sent me the audio files to transcribe for him because I’m sure I could have made out more of what I was saying.
-
Interviewer was most likely a tool. Hammy is god
-
i dont think steve bancroft is particularly a tool or anything (dont know the guy so im not really sure) but i think its more the case that he already had an angle planned out for the article before he even met hamdog and did the interview (which was heavily build around hamiltons "fall from grace" as a pro bmxer).
plus it was the first episode of the albion, a new free bmx magazine heading into a riding scene so heavily influenced by the internet that most people overlook printed media.
whats going to get peoples attention more? a story about how hamilton couldnt be fucked with pro life and being in the limelight so he retreated a bit and did his own thing living in a messy flat (not like hes the first bmx rider to live in a messy shithole of a house/apartment is it?), or the tragic tale of a revolutionary young rider who fell off, got into drugs, lost his mind syd barret style and now sits in a room on his own in the dark all the time?

Hamilton is the reason I started riding. seeing his part in Animal Can I Eat and the Federal video his riding blew me away. bought my first real bmx like a week later haha

i hate when people bring up the basically unfounded drug shit about this guy. he seems like a sweet dude. a lil haggard and out there but also like abe said probably just knows how to party harder.. i dunno. maybe he snorted 3 adderall off the water tank of a toilet once or twice but that doesn't mean his head's all fucked from drugs. has he been caught with meth or something? i guess i don't really know but i don't think i've ever heard..
-

Oh thank god for that!

My favorite rider. Basically tried to copy him when starting to ride, and I still try to.
Found this recent phone video on youtube.

the drug thing is stupid, i know loads of people who get fuckin loose on drugs come the weekend but can still hold down a job and ride during the week. its true some people cant handle it but its stupid to write someone off as a pure wasteman just cos they like to get fucked up.
-
Seriously, in that Federal interview he's all over the place talking about the most random shit. How he in reality has the number 12 on his house, but the Albion guy said he didnt have. Well, maybe he didnt see it then.
The Albion wanted to do an interview about a legend, and maybe get some facts straight. What does he do? Shaves his eyebrow, and try to freak the guy out. He can blame him self if he dosnt agree on how the interview turned out.
I feel his answers are more well thought in his old DIG interview
http://assblasters.org/2007/04/16/steven-hamilton-interview-dig-issue-42/
-
maybe he shouldnt have bothered agreeing to the interview if he wasnt really bothered about it, but i think its pretty amusing that he shaved his sideburn and shit just to try and freak out banners.
deffos seems like a crazy guy, but in a good way. bmx is more interesting with characters like him who stand out among the clean cut clones and comp jock dick pros
-
A lot of that interview read like the stuff bluemeate writes, but was a bit more coherent. Needless to say, I thought it was a fucking awesome read.
-
anyone who feels the need to air a pointless criticism about hamilton's way of life is a fucking bore.

badmanzdem, i think is suitably colloquial.

clean shaven ham dog (deffos off the crack/smack/phet/krokodil)
-
maybe he shouldnt have bothered agreeing to the interview if he wasnt really bothered about it, but i think its pretty amusing that he shaved his sideburn and shit just to try and freak out banners.
deffos seems like a crazy guy, but in a good way. bmx is more interesting with characters like him who stand out among the clean cut clones and comp jock dick pros
To get your sponsorship monies you're often required to get a certain amount of coverage if you're not going to go to contests and stuff. This interview would be considered part of that I'm sure.
-
Analyze this clip?

Manual/firecracker then jump over rail? Wallride or manual down rail then jump stairs?
Too blurry to tell.
-
..
-
It's crazy how Hamilton footage has more in common with Bigfoot footage than the video TCU regularly throws out.
-
Saw this on Empire today and even though it's old it's still funny as hell...
STEVEN HAMILTON
1. fucking pedal like real fucking fast until you see the thing you want to grind on. 2. close your fucking eyes and scream while violently jerking the fucking handlebars into the fucking air, while like jumping or something. 3. keep screaming as your back peg fucking starts sliding against some shit and do that fucking air-humping balance thing while fucking screaming, tilting as far back as humanly possible, but not so far back as though you were trying to fall back and smack your fucking skull against the pavement. 4. fucking just feel it, bro. 5. violently jerk the handlebars forward and take a nice warm piss in your pants. the end.
-
I'm in Columbus now and I see Steven here and there. He rides with a few of us Hood Antics dudes from time to time. He's definitely not as crazy as that interview makes him out to be. He's pretty quiet still.
Most of the time he is dribbling a basketball up and down the street or hanging in front of Black Sheep. I'll try and get some footage of him soon. He's always asking us to film him.
-
we'll let you off for the name drop if you come up with the goods
-
What are you doing for work?
Just riding. I haven’t’ had a job since I quit my job working for the University here which was in 2004. That is why I considered myself a pro, because it was how I got paid. I know a lot of people are great riders but I don’t think they should consider themselves pro if they work other jobs. I actually really liked the job I had at the university and I didn’t want to quit but since I wasn’t a student I couldn’t keep the job anymore. But since then I haven’t had a job other than riding..
so you're not pro if you work a small day job...? hmmm
-
Can someone PLEASE re-upload that albion interview?
I did read it when it was up but all this talk makes me wanna read it again.
-
we'll let you off for the name drop if you come up with the goods
Haha, it's no name drop. Everyone in Columbus knows Steven, BMXer or not. He rides wheelies around OSU all day.
-
... I'll try and get some footage of him soon. He's always asking us to film him.
If hammy were asking me to film him, I'd rob my own mother to get the job done.
-
All time favorite rider, of course.
-
Hamilton is the reason I started riding. seeing his part in Animal Can I Eat and the Federal video his riding blew me away. bought my first real bmx like a week later haha
Seconded.
-
we'll let you off for the name drop if you come up with the goods
i think certain pros/riders nullify name dropper status, for instance "i got to ride with ruben"/"ruben did _____, it was godlike" or "joe rich looked at me, and i felt emasculated, he truly is the ultimate male" or "and then bob scerbo hopped over it, and all was well"
you know, everything within reason. i feel like hammy sightings/meetings/knowings are on the ok list.
-
so you're not pro if you work a small day job...? hmmm
It's all semantics but I'd say this situation was semi-pro.
-
If hammy were asking me to film him, I'd rob my own mother to get the job done.
Trying to film with him is insane. Wants to ride at ungodly hours in terrible weather conditions. Wants shit filmed really weird. Pretty huge flake from what I hear.
-
Steven Hamilton is a straight up boss, people say they dont give a fuck but he really doesn't and is still living it his way. His Can I eat part is really good enough for a lifetime anyways.
-
His Can I eat part is really good enough for a lifetime anyways.
yup yup yup
-
there was a couple minute edit on here like 2 years ago that rob d filmed and it was all hamilton doing clips on campus on a weirdly high short rail... i should dig that up on vimeo.
i occasionally see him pedaling around when i go to class, but the last time i saw him he still resembled grizzly adams
-
some more good shit from trafaleo (sp?) era hamilton

Supposedly. My girlfriends cousin and her husband have Hamilton regularly at their place stealing their wifi. 3 times I've had the chance to meet him just dont feel like going to amish country, or lame ass weddings.
I'll still suck his dick

you suck

Thanks Austin! There were a few i never saw and it's nice to have them on BG Hamdog Thread.

Good interview. He seems very creative not just riding bikes. The part where he talked about being influenced by soccer players and whatnot was pretty interesting.

i found a poster of steven in my closet if anyone wants it,
also saw this, looks like he finally cut his brake cable

The park in the last photo feels like it is built at a 1:2 scale. Nothing is taller than 3 ft, and that includes a kidney bowl type thing with hip. It's a really odd place.

That is a HARD bank to skate.
-
It seems he is off Federal now: http://thecomeup.com/news/steven-hamilton-off-federal/
-
interesting. i wonder if/when he's going to pick up a new frame sponsor?
-
i normally don't care about these things but it'd be so awesome if he ended up riding for t1 or FBM.
-
It sucks, it's also very BMX in a way... Personally I'd like to see him get picked up by someone, but I'd be doubtful. Skate companies seem to hold on to their legends a bit better. BMX companies can be more fickle, although given that they are geared more towards moronic teenagers, it's no real surprise.
-
interesting. i wonder if/when he's going to pick up a new frame sponsor?
It would be cool to see him get hooked up. Flow for Skavenger? Wasn't he getting flowed by Empire, at some time? At least he would have something for the parts that Animal don't make. Maybe someone he has previous connections in the industry will hook him up. Hopeful thinking, who knows?
-
Theres a spot waiting for him on BUDBMX
http://www.facebook.com/budbmx
-
I find it weird that he was dropped just as he was releasing vids/pics again.

One would hope it would continue to fuel this new Hamilton chapter to work hard at the media game and get a frame sponsor.

can u ask him if he wants a bud bmx hat plz

I'm rooting for s&m who doesn't wanna see him and Cam riding together feeding off each other

A lot of companies are dropping legends lately. Hamilton and Stricker. Whats next, Homan and Byrnes?
-
Stricker still on S&M?
I was stoked to see a bit of Hamilton in the new AMPM DVD.
-
Hamdog's all over the instagram game with Animal. So many photos recently!
Gotta be something good coming his way.
-
Whats next, Homan and Byrnes?
Don't you dare
-
A lot of companies are dropping legends lately. Hamilton and Stricker. Whats next, Homan and Byrnes?
to be fair when was the last time stricker released any sort of media?
yeah hamilton dropped off the radar for a while but he came back in force with like 4 edits and and endless stream of photos via animal.
-
we help him out whenever he needs it and will continue to do so
Great to hear, anything to keep the legend going.
I find it weird that he was dropped just as he was releasing vids/pics again.
I know, that's the strangest thing to me, he's just getting back into it, why not give him a bit more of a chance?
-
Not enough spins to hat fly offs probably.
-
Whats the point in buying Federal if there isnt any Hamilton? are the Forte guys still on Federal?
-
I'm sure they headed to united with the other half of the team that left federal.
-
to be fair when was the last time stricker released any sort of media?

I'm pretty sure he's been injured..
-
Whats the point in buying Federal if there isnt any Hamilton? are the Forte guys still on Federal?
They've been on United since, well... United began I'm pretty sure. I don't even recall them being on Federal, haha. Federal does still have a pretty banging team with Lacey and Hoffman, but Hamilton is just a legend and all-time favorite of mine.
-
Help me understand this. Ian Morris started federal, to sell it and start united. Why?
-
Ian left Federal to do his own thing. He wasn't the only person involved with Federal. Anyone from Hastings can probably tell you some more dramatic story but that's the gist of it from what I understand.
-
I'm a drama whore so if anyone wants to inform the board or me in a PM it would be greatly appreciated.
Also. Does anyone remember the OLD OLD OLD sandy Carson interview in ride with his Red division/nation, t1 bars and leopard print primo seat? I'd like to see a pic of it.

It's insane just how much one guy influenced a new generation of riders.
-
I'm really glad he is still on animal. Such a legendary rider should only be associated with a legendary team. I think it was a mistake taking him of federal, but they already fucked up when they lost t-nez.

It's insane just how much one guy influenced a new generation of riders.
you're not wrong, but he was a game changer (as i'm sure you know) and for me anyway, when someone says anything Hamilton related I pretty much jump in my mind to the first time watching can i eat or road fools 12. in the can i eat section the first line blew my mind, in rf12 he just fucking destroyed everything. one thing that bmx could legitimately ape from skating would be respect for legends. don't see a lot of it. some companies will drop someone simply because Johnny Flyout down at your local park isn't interested.
-

Think it was posted earlier in the thread, but still pretty dope. Hamilton finally makes an edit for federal and starts producing material and then he's dropped...:dunno:
-
I've come to the conclusion that Steven was playin a joke on bmx for the past few years to see who would write him off as a nut. Federal didn't get the joke as well as a few others.
-

He basically said that in his last interview. He actually hasn't done drugs in a long time.
-
Hamilton is the man, but I'm not sure which was more full of shit, the Albion "interview" or Steven's response that was on the Federal site. Probably safe to split the difference and view both as highly skewed and the truth falling somewhere in the middle.
-
I just watches his part from the Orchid DVD a while back and the set of stairs he jumps is crazily huge
-

I thought that as well, and I also thought that Federal did get the joke and that was why they were willing to support him for so long, so yes it does seem odd that they dropped him just as he started producing watchable content again.
However as we all know BMX is a young man's game and whilst we BGers might respect the old/mid school the new kids aren't interested. Sad to say but to make money and stay relevant you've got to be pushing your riding and getting exposure. Corey Martinez is a good example of someone who came up at the same time as Hamilton who has done this successfully. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love Hamilton's riding but I can see how his part in Cuts and that recent webvideo wouldn't excite Joe Barspinner down the park (not helped by the filming quality).
Having said all that, I was on the Hoffman website for some reason the other day and noticed that they have a "lifer" team, indicating that they still support some of the older guys (Mad Jon etc) which I think is awesome. Maybe Federal should have been more tactful and done something like that - keep on giving him frames and stuff.

thats what i sorta figured too, not many people want to see you ride the same wall ride over and over again, especially if you end up going lower and lower. With that being said, i love that spot and his riding so i dont think ill be bored of his videos anytime soon
-
Same here. But there are a lot of recycled things done over and over it just come down to who did it the most stylish or who put the most creativity into the spot. I sure as hell don't run brake and I don't have the same riding style as Hamilton but he is one of those people I like to watch ride a bike because it is refreshing even though its not the new stuff.
-
Not sure if this was posted but JPR scanned an old hamilton interview and put up on his now defunked blog circa 2009
http://boxedwinefiasco.blogspot.com/2009/11/steven-hamilton-interview.html (http://boxedwinefiasco.blogspot.com/2009/11/steven-hamilton-interview.html)

screencapped from that interview
-
"I can guarantee you with certainty that steven's riding style will not turn into the new fad"
i find that sentence ironic because its true noone has really ever come close to riding like hamdog, but there were quite a few 19" frames popped up when he was at his peak in terms of getting coverage
-
Yeah his style of riding definitely influenced a new generation of riders. I remember that parks back home were full of kids trying nose wheelies on his signature Federal frame when it was released.
-

Amazing.
thats oppo for him as well
-
in his edits i noticed that most of his tables are oppo
-
yeah hes got them sick now
-
Why was he not in Ride's 20 most influential riders of the last 20 years?
-
Why was he not in Ride's 20 most influential riders of the last 20 years?
Because they had to leave a spot open for Garrett Reynolds.
-
Because they had to leave a spot open for Garrett Reynolds.
You would like him if he was an alligator.
-
Damnit Switchblade. We'll settle this at work.
-
thats oppo for him as well
that is regular for him, oppo for a non goofy tabler

i find that sentence ironic because its true noone has really ever come close to riding like hamdog, but there were quite a few 19" frames popped up when he was at his peak in terms of getting coverage
that was the past, he is talking about the future. that is why the statement: "I can guarantee you with certainty that steven's riding style will not turn into the new fad" is probably true.
-
..
-
him and joe cox in my most humble opinion.
though looking back and then looking at now it's amazing to see how far it has all come. yet i still think the way they used them/linked them was exemplary.
-
don't forget DMC. he has a nose manual to 180 in the mix section (http://vimeo.com/3001953) of the first animal video.
-
If we're talking about who inspired more people to nose manual I'd nominate Bob Scerbo, I remember him being the only dude I'd seen do a clean brakeless nose manual for a long time.
http://vimeo.com/8002922 (http://vimeo.com/8002922)
-
I'm still riding a Federal Hamilton frame. Has the specs I like.
-
If we're talking about who inspired more people to nose manual I'd nominate Bob Scerbo, I remember him being the only dude I'd seen do a clean brakeless nose manual for a long time.
http://vimeo.com/8002922 (http://vimeo.com/8002922)
I can't find the first empire dvd online, but that had from my knowledge the longest brakeless hop up nose manny I'd ever seen from Ham dog.
He does a super slow one in it.
Don't forget that stuff like this came out before that Scerbo section
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqsR8A6psvM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqsR8A6psvM)
I'd really argue otherwise for Scerbo owning that position.
-
For me, it's less of a matter of who did them first and more of a matter of who people paid more attention to for doing them. Scerbo has always avoided the spotlight and Steven was the rider to watch for a moment. His section in The Day is Over led to his section in Can I Eat? which lead to his going on 2 (I think?) Road Fools trips and the Orchid video trip, all of which occurred in the span of something like two years. That is a lot of coverage in a pre-web video era.
He wasn't the first to do lengthy brakeless nose manuals, but I think he was the first to really inspire a wide range of riders to start trying.
-
Fair point on Scerbo. Either way, all legends.
-
kids these days with their chad kerleys and their alex kennedys...
-
A.K, even with his sorded past, I can deal with...
But the love of Kerley has gotten out of hand. I don't see the appeal, sure it's all highly skilled. But, bitch cranking, stem humping, manualling and barspinning in and out of EVERYTHING is kind of boring.
-
A.K, even with his sorded past, I can deal with...
Oh yes, what's the goss?
I can't really relate to any contemporary street riding, I like watching Lacey and AK but the pegless guys are by far the most interesting in my opinion. Richard Forne and Geoff Slatterly stand up!
-

I'm sick of the stock four pegged edits and all, but man, Alex Kennedy is good. And not just, "look I can add a barspin to everything!" kind of way, but he actually rides his bike well and does some original stuff.
-
This edit of AK kinda fell through the cracks but he still does some insane grinds in here!

oh i was just kidding around because he used to be the U.k ramp child of the moment before he completely changed into the street machine he is now. not slaggin him off in any way, just think it's weird when riders do such turnabouts in how they look and ride.

photos? I don't recall ever seeing anything, but then again I'm horrible at consistently following BMX.
I do agree with the manual-barspin comment above though. See 'simple' tricks or 'simple lines' is sometimes a breath of fresh-air compared to the mass.

yeah hes good but i still enjoy watching guys like the animal crew riding street more, can tell by the spots they find and lines they do that theyve always been riding street, not got real good at park first then made the transition to street riding now that its got real popular again.
whatever though, at least were past the sub 20lb bike, lets all just do footjams phase.
no one will ever come close to emulating hamdog though
-
Everyone ran slammed seats and that fit stem in 2009.

Stop not talking about Hamilton.
-
I can't find the first empire dvd online, but that had from my knowledge the longest brakeless hop up nose manny I'd ever seen from Ham dog.
He does a super slow one in it.

I just finished watching Skapegoat 7 and his clips were quality. I wish he had had more.
-
The idea of "real" VS "fake" street riders is asinine.
Skapegoat 7 is so good. I loved Hamilton's 360 tap into the pool.

Love it, thanks. Still doesn't have the clip I was thinking of, well same spot, but from a different angle.

hmmm, Mark Webb's "Street" edit springs to mind. There's people who go out, search, look and ride whatever they can find, there's others who hone a trick in a park somewhere and go out and film it on street. I honestly believe there is a difference. In my mind there's "Where is there a spot for this trick" and "Where is there a spot". I may have had a can or two, but I honestly think there's a valid discussion, maybe not argument, in there.
Skapegoat 7 was awesome though, I'll give you that. Loved the Hamdog's clips too.
-
Totally true.
In a sense one person is better at hard tricks, while the other is better at riding hard spots.
-
i like watching ratkid ride, some people could argue that he just nibbles but hes always riding interesting and unique setups
-
i just went and watched the ratkid section in dqydj2 and fuck that was so sick! I've never really paid attention to him but damn he shreds.
-
ratkid and dave belcher are the shit. plain and simple.
myself and my boss were talking about this again today, building bikes and talking about bikes. good times.
has the hamiltron always done his tables opposite?

I very much agree with you on this. Also, the way edit are made are a bit different. I was having a convo with my buddy, and we came to the conclusion that skapegoat, skavenger, hood antics and etc have a very good "vibe" to their videos. Rather, the park shredders usually have like dub step, or some epic music that can distract from the riding. Also, there are different type of park shredders, but i am specifically talking about the whip, flip and barspin machines.

just saw this fresh upload from hammy himself over on youtube - http://youtu.be/hOleWtx3hJM

Hamilton is hands down my favourite rider. Any ideas if he will get picked up by someone else? Skateboarding has this culture of revering their heroes and pioneers and bmx seems to sorely miss this.

Yeah i guess he is! I guess that retrospective viewing of bmx doesnt happen for the younger riders (i only started riding three years ago having come from skateboarding, the respect for the pioneers of the sport and the interest in what they did to push the sport carried over from skateboarding's culture). But then bmx still seems 10 years behind skateboarding in terms of culture to me at least, so maybe it will just take some time.
Also, that bike check is awesome but it is slightly annoying they left off the stuff that wasnt animal.

I'm pretty sure he got them like 10 years ago as well

yeah every pic of his bike ive seen has had profiles on them

Also currently appreciating the 39 Animal OG and massive chain slap in that flick.

He may or may not have some more awesome clips in QSS4.
-
That cart hop is crazy.. love his bike

Would be nice if someone uploaded scans from his latest "it's been a rough year" interview from dig...

Dig's subscription price has went down. May need to subscribe to a bmx magazine for the first time in many years.

Definitely true. BMX could still learn a great deal from skateboarding.
Hamilton is definitely sort of the Penny of BMX, though I wish he could be more the Gall of it.
Skateboarding culture definitely destroys BMX culture for the most part as well.
Definitely a lot more to it and I appreciate its attempts to maintain a less than squeaky clean image all the time.
I've definitely long wished for a Thrasher or Low Card for BMX, but there really isn't one.
In terms of the revering their pioneers and things of that nature, I do really appreciate how much respect the average skater still has for people like Cardiel and the like, but it's not there all the time.
I think Gareth Stehr's pretty much sponsor-less right now, due to Foundation deciding to try to become more mainstream and "relavant", getting rid of all their older lineup, minus Duffel.
I do think that if I went to the average skatepark, too, and asked a normal skater kid in high school who Stehr or Tosh Townend was, he probably wouldn't have a clue.
-
It just depends on who you're talking to, I think. I just rode with a group of younger riders, and it was pretty predictable who knew about dudes like Hamilton. Hint: it was the kids with heavier, beat up bikes with more of a street style of riding-- the ones that clearly gave less of a fuck, to put it simply.
If you subscribe to that kind of riding, you're bound to eventually discover Hamilton, Edwin, Lino, Rat...all the dudes that we took cues from when we were younger. And while we might have the advantage of being a product of that particular generation of BMXers, I remember the people I rode with the first time around still knew about and appreciated riders even further back like DMC, Vic Murphy, Kelly Baker, etc. etc.
I don't think BMX has a history of disregarding its legends, necessarily, but I do think that for the new generation of riders (those that have been inundated with the rapid commercialization and internet coverage of the sport), there's just a huge blind spot that wasn't as obvious 10 years ago and hasn't yet been addressed by most media outlets in BMX.
I think Dig is probably the closest thing we have to Thrasher. Its a shame it remains one of the smaller publications, because if it were pervasive in the way that Thrasher has been-- and for decades, like Thrasher-- more kids would be exposed to that side of BMX and (to borrow a very tired phrase) 'know their roots' a little better.
Alright, I'm done now. Just a few thoughts.
-
Yeah, I definitely feel like Dig or Albion are the closest things to those types that we've got right now. I was considering doing a zine a while ago, but I'm not sure I really have the time to pursue it at all.
Did do a bit of a demo of it a while ago, but never really finished it.
-
Shame you didn't have the time, that's the kind of thing that can really improve BMX culture from the bottom up. Which reminds me, one of my favorite things about Thrasher is their zine coverage.
-
Yeah. Still like to do it at some point or another.
edit 2: didn't want to unintentionally thread jack

just spotted this on the animal site, 2004 san fran footy some of which is from trafielo or w/e it was called

So good. Filming was pretty spot on too. Much better than most of the shit I see.
-
Shame you didn't have the time, that's the kind of thing that can really improve BMX culture from the bottom up. Which reminds me, one of my favorite things about Thrasher is their zine coverage.
I have sent zines before to some of the bigger publications, but I never receive any follow-up. Part of it is my slacking and probably only send a copy or two.
I do wish one of the publications would have a zine article similar to Thrasher, or maybe a good interview with a zine maker. BMX has some great zines that sometimes get overlooked: Union Press, Yo Sick, Holeshot, Barnacles, etc.

That july edit is refreshing.
-
its usually pretty good whenever steven comes back with some refreshing riding aside from the rest of the edits out there.
i will enjoy all of his edits as long as they keep being so simple and freestyle. I enjoy them because its like watching one of your friends ride, the friend that is usually always down to ride and always really good and naturally talented, not forcing himself too much but always riding whatever there is regardless. then he comes out with creative ideas and makes me think, damn why am i so close minded.
got this wallpaper somewhere, i think it was on dig. i dig.

Awesome!
I've been doing one footed manuals on my way to work lately. I'm slightly nervous about full speed downhill manuals without brakes after having brakes for 13 years, with one footed manuals, you can just put your foot down if you start to loop out.

What is that one-foot-nose-wheelie 360 his does actually called?
Spent so many hours rewinding that in one of his Federal parts.
-
I think it's called the spinaroonie. And there's no way he's gonna run those big-ass bars for very long.
-
Jesus, Nyquist is the same age as me in RF12 - he looks about 35! Most of those guys look way older than they were, Hamdog and Doyle being obvious exceptions.
-
I'm glad to see that Hamdog keeps getting flow from legit companies. It'd be badass if he actually got on the pro team even though it's been a long time since I payed any attention to who rides for who.
-
The video from this weekend was sick

That was pretty good. At the very least more interesting than watching a 'street line' video that I have already saw in a different order with a different face.

The Intrikat frame is the oddly the most suitable modern frame for him.

He never really left 2002, awesome.

Haha nah, it'd be sick to run or see a bmx company just have every Steven Hamilton signature part(that isn't currently in production by another company), so if you wanted you could build Steven Hamiltonz bike. And like, pay him all the money. Everything made in da U.S. MakeAmericaStevenHamiltonAgain!
