Odyssey key chain is out now. Apparently.
So this is ment to come with an chain tool adaptor for initially breaking it to size is that right?
-
it's just a allen key?
-
GEORGE!!!!!!!!
-
The real question is... Will if fit my Model C?????
-
It would be interesting to see what tool is needed to break this chain.
-
"The chain will come with an adapter that will work with most tools. We will also offer a tool. We're putting together a post with a "how to install" video" - Nuno at Odyssey

Looked them up on empire's website.

I'm sure they'll be sick, but what do think about those prices?

It's something new and Odyssey put a lot of money into it to get them made. I'm sure the factory making them required some special molds or something that hiked it up. Seems worth the price for the quality.
I'd imagine chains will be a bit pricier. I know Shadow hasn't released the new version of their Interlock chain because of pricing issues.
-
They are pricey but hopefully they will be worth it. Maybe a stampy test or something may convince people.
Actually I really want to see a stampy test for this.

I would never consider using a halflink chain, let alone pay that kind of money for one,but I will definately be buying the new keychain.
-

thats the impression i was under. rather disappointed it isn't
-
G always said 40-ish, no surprises here really.
-
I have no problems paying 40+ dollars for a good quality chain.A chain is something you don't want to skimp on.Alot cheaper than visiting a dentist to have your grill fixed due to a chaep chain snapping.
-
This shits gonna be like 70 bucks in Canada, or close to it. Sheeeeeit.
-
Looks pretty cool. Shucks I just bought a new kmc.
-

Just to clarify.
A chain breaker is needed to cut the chain initially. However the joining link/half link have allen key pins for easy removal/adjustment.
Essentially the exact same principal to a regular chain with a joining link but much better.
-

Actually I really want to see a stampy test for this.
What is a stampy test? I could google it but i'm that lazy.
Looks pretty cool. Shucks I just bought a new kmc.
I just bought a bluebird, will be rocking that until these will be available.
Sure thing i would pay the extra €€€ for a chain that saves my jewels knees and teeth.
My last chain was a KHE Collapse. Those will survive WW3. Beefy as fuck.
Now on a KMC not so kool 710 and have a bluebird ready to be built onto what will be my new bike.
If i snap the 510hx bluebird, the keychain should be more up for bashing and grinding which will make it a great investment for the 4pegged grind combo people.
Glad Odyssey never ventured into making halflink chains. Despite Odyssey's awesome reputation i'd never trust a halflink.
-
Well technically they do still come with a half link.

i suppose Ody does this under pressure of the 'i want my axle slammed' kinda people.
Halflinks stretch, halflinks break where they're bent, just depends if it's sooner or later. They kinda lack in every feature that make a chain a good chain. No superior tensile strenght over regular chains, i believe by FAR.
Just wraps around a 8t better.
Most chains these days are up for 9t, which is what 90% of the world runs anyway.
Halflinks look snazzy though- and it looks like the halflink chains now have worthy opponents in that part of the competition.
And tbh i don't even need to ride the keychain to be able say it's probably stronger than most halflink -or normal chains.
The halflink provided with the keychain will probably use the same thickness plate that the keychain does, so it should be expected that these halflinks will out-perform regular halflinks.
-
Pretty obvious just looking at the Keychain's half link that they put effort into designing a better half link to go with their chain.
I don't think Odyssey/Gsport does anything "under pressure" which is why they consistently put out parts with no gimmicks. It's pretty much a necessity to include a half link due to the shorter rear ends/smaller dropout slots that are around these days.
Any pics of the non-hollow Keychain on a bicycle, G/Chris C?
-
& whats the weight difference?
do the hollow pins have any benefit besides weight?
-

For the hollow pin yes. Not needed on the solid version.
The real question is... Will if fit my Model C?????
Yes unless you have a crazy gear like 33/10 or something.
It would be interesting to see what tool is needed to break this chain.
If the slot or hole that you push the pin out into is over 5mm then you are fine.
We will be doing a specific tool which will be very affordable though.
However, you can also break the hollow pin version using just the supplied adaptor and a bench vice:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohcbhDwkt0s
or even an old brake nut and a hammer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CjDNgCXLm0
Please excuse the amateur nature of these videos they were just for internal use really but I CBA to make new ones.

The price is as low as we can make it. Please bear in mind that this chain has been in development for 8 years and we have spent many many tens of thousands of dollars on tooling.
It is also worth mentioning that if you have a bench vice and an old brake nut then you will never need a chain tool (see above videos) and even a cheap chain tool added to the cost of a normal chain is a similar price and cheap chain tools do tend to get broken and good chain tools are pretty expensive. So in my opinion makes more sense to spend the money on a better chain.
:)
G.
-
& whats the weight difference?
do the hollow pins have any benefit besides weight?
Hollow version is 300g, solid is 335g I think. However the hollow pin is also a little bit harder to push the pins out of because the hole through the middle makes it easier to rivet the ends over extra hard. I would highly recommend the hollow pin version as it is lighter AND even stronger, AND using the above tricks you don't need a chainbreaker.
:)

Love your voice in those videos, G. I'll probably "whack my mole" to them later, ifyouknowwhatI'msayin....

This was hilarious. "OK, one more hit and it should be through........Bollocks" and the finishing "there you go it can be done, bye"
I'm not as excited as other people about the chain as I don't grind anymore and haven't snapped a chain without grinding on it before, but seeing it then it looks awesome.
I'm really tempted for one for my SS as I put a lot of torque through it on climbs, but I imagine it wouldn't be long enough and I'd need two?
-

I was thinking this too.

I am pushing for us to do a longer one for SS and fixed, but given how long it has taken to get this out it may take a while...
:)

I plan on waiting a bit to see how things pan out with it, but I really want to try one on my trials bike.
-
Ah fuckbeans, I want to test one out on my fixaaay.
I am genuinely excited about this chain which is rediculous for a 34 year old man.

You could get one for your bmx and one for your big bike and use the leftover links from the bmx to make it extra long for the big bike.
-
You'd still be short of 1 joining pin/link thing wouldnt you? Assuming you cant push pins back into the chain....
I really like the idea of these, will probs get one.
-
I'm most definately going to pick up a few for sure.
-
Been harassing the local BMX store about this chain for ages. Making sure when it's released in Australia that he gets me one so I'm super keen for this
-
usually I'll lay back and see what happens with the first run of a new products, but this time 'm getting one asap.
-
I have a feeling these will be sold out everywhere.
-
Seems to me any 3mm Allen head bolt is easy to strip if you don't use caution. Sometimes shit happens. I want to see master links and threaded pins for sale incase you strip one of those little threaded pins out by spinning your 3mm Allenkey in it.
-
you're probably a hamfisted moron and completely deserving of it if you manage to round out a 3mm allen broach.
-

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Instead of using moron I was going to use idiot.
-
T3 would've been wayyyy better. I think. I love torx.
-
moron has a better ring to it
good point on the torx - but I'm pretty sure your typical bmx rats response to that would be "this chain sukcs! it uses one of thouse star tool thingyies, i don't have that! now i have to spend my weed money on tools!" fuck I'm getting salty
but that reminds me that i need to pick myself up a nice t-handle t25 at some point

Torx keys are awesome

Looks like it does come with an extra pin.

i bet this is going to be at about 50 euros in europe... looks like the best chain and i love the design but that is five to seven years of koolchain for me.
The Koolchain is crap.I never had a chain that stretched as much as it did.
This new Odyssey chain looks beefy as fck.It could give the Wippermann chains a run for their money.
-
No grease used on the threaded pin dealy thing?
I for-see a LOT of kids cross threading this thing. Or installing it with the pin/threads going the wrong way and it self unscrewing...
Or maybe not, since the cost is so high, maybe the kids won't be buying it?
Odyssey makes some cool stuff but most kids are too dumb (or don't have dads to teach them) how to work on mechanical things.
Personally, I think this is a cool idea but I don't see myself buying one anytime soon.
-
If kids are that effing stupid they don't know how to install something this simple without messing it up.They need to be wearing their bike helmet 24/7 365 days a year.
-
Look how many kids had problems with elementary stem and wombolts....
-
Ya well if they would learn how to follow instructions or suck up their pride and have someone install it for them that knows what they are doing, the problems would not have occured the way they did.
-
I agree. The fact still remains that kids are that stupid
-
G in the video of Jim talking about the key chain, I thought he said the chain is wider. (I'm battling major sickness at the moment so the old brain is t working that well) did I miss understand that or will it be wider than a normal chain? If so am I going to have issues with the mds clearance?
-
most of the chain wear ive seen on mds guards is cos of the pins sticking out from a regular chain and rubbing on the guard, because these are flush, hopefully itll be ok
-
Also. Will there be separate master links available? Other wise this chain becomes useless once it has broken. I suppose if you used the half like and kept the master link and spare pin for that. I think the chain should come with a spare master link anyway.
-
You think it should come with two half master links? You know two half links equal a whole link? One of each master link comes with the chain. They've also said in the fifteen threads about the Keychain that there will be master links sold separately. I think that's kinda the main point of the chain, you know? "Key" chain, like allen keys!
-
I think the chain should come with a spare master link anyway.
No I think the chain should come with a spare (an other) master link.
What are you talking about 2 half links for?
And yes I understand the principal of this chain.
-
how many chains can you name that come with two master links? let alone 2 halflinks.
it's a more expensive chain due to the new design, and the tooling and probably more costs that G or someone else mentioned. The first halflink chains also didn't have any other features apart from being different and innovative.
They were also real expensive and didn't come with ANY link. The plates weren't even connected, little rollers everywhere.
The odyssey chain seems very well designed and i don't think that we would need more master links than they supply.
If we do, then just like with any other chain, we turn to the bike shop and get ourselves a new master link. Or if we're that paranoid, we might just order them in advance along with the chain.
edit: or ditch masterlinks lol
-
Extra masterlinks will be available separately. I also want to do a little kit with a master link and a 3mm hex key you can put on your keyring like this:-

Yeah what is with some shops.
Our LBS sells the cult 410 for $28 and the 510 for $35 but a kmc 510 for $20.
-
well cult is "in" so they can charge more and still have people buy it up like crazy. supply and demand son
and local shops just cannot compete with online pricing, especially on small parts and components - they would be loosing money faster than you can flush it down the toilet. they have to make their money somehow, and the best way is by marking up wear-and-tear items like chains, cables, tires etc
-
hope my lbs has em in when im back next week, keen to finally get my hands on one

I'll fight you to get the first one from mike. And you've seen me man I'm huge
-
Got mine yesterday.
Breaking it wasn't the epic ass beating I expected.
-
I hope this doesn't mean you broke it in one day?
Judging by the video odyssey posted about the assembly of the chain, you shouldn't need more force than usual :)
Oh and
(http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/500x/43291821.jpg)
-
He broke it with a chainbreaker to get the correct length I suppose.
-
Yeah, as in made it the correct length.
And just to clarify, I suck at chains. Every time I have to push a pin its usually world war three.
This chain was not that. It was pretty easy.
Now that I've rode it a bit, it does seem a bit loud and not as smooth as my usual bluebird.
-

Your sprockets are probably a little worn to match the stretch in your old chain.

Bought a new sprocket for this reason alone. Will post my experience soon.

Anyone snapped one yet?
-
Anyone snapped one yet?
Nope
Day one though i had to push a pin back in because i broke it in the wrong place becasue i measured it to my old chain which i forgot was a 28 and i'm now running a 30-9 again.
Got to say though, the first few days it was really creaky but now its nice and smooth. and i bought a new driver and sprocket just for this chain hahahah. nope i have perfect drive line. Still waiting on my porn hub though. waiting for empire to get it so i can order it through them
-
Ok time to update:
Installed the hollow version about 2 weeks ago. Pain in the ass at first, but finally got everything dialed in with my chain length and slamming the wheel.
It has been super smooth, has NOT stretched from what I can tell. I use a lot of pedal pressure when I ride and other chains have snapped on me but this one is holding strong! I ride flatland if you should ask.
The ease of breaking it with an Allen key on a slammed wheel makes this thing worth the price alone!
-
I can confirm that it got smoother after a week or two. Also, if I go full meathead when torqueing the masterlink, it gets pretty noisy and shitty, so I usually just snug it and keep an eye on it.
-
Tried to buy one of these this weekend. Sold out everywhere.
ETA on a new batch?
-
Last I heard was end of this month (July). Heard that a few weeks ago, but haven't followed up on it, so that may have changed since the month is almost over.
-
probs wont get one for a bit cos ive got a brand new 510 i bought when my chain broke in barca, but then i fixed it and its been fine since. keen to keep knowing how others do with it, especially people who do sprocket stalls and grind on their chain etc
-
Mike just got them in at local. So when you get home you an get one
-
yeah i saw, im not back for a couple of weeks yet though so i reckon theyll have sold out by then
-
The UK is still waiting.

Not 100% on the price but I'm getting a new driver for my cult coaster and a key chain posted down to me for $130

be sods law that waller would get em in as soon as im out of sheff for a few days
-
They are in the UK in about a month, I checked today.
-
ok im gonna miss that so ill have to grab one from local when i get back
-
They should be out in the UK in the next two weeks. The normal version will be £34.99 and the hollow one will be £49.99. I've got a bunch on order along with the tools and spares for our stores.
-
That is $82 american. fuck.
-

Yeah I was just talking about dannos hah no wonder ppl buy stuff from the states.
-
I don't see that as too unreasonably priced considering the extra tech involved compared to other chains. Over here the Bluebird chain is £21.99, and the Fly Tractor/Shadow Interlock chains are about £29-31.99 anyway.
-
22 pounds for a Bluebird is a bit much. They're not that much even here in aus
-
Brought mine when it came out (cost a fortune to ship from america to the UK), been running it at the trails every day. It snapped the other day due to user error, because I am a complete idiot I put the thing the wrong way round. The master link became unscrewed and it snapped pretty dramatically. Used the half link (installed correctly) and its running sweet now.
But yeah, make sure to put the thing on the right way round.

$70 AU for the hollow pin so i declined. i may get the solid pin if my local gets them in but im not paying $70 for a chain

No, if I remember right they were sold out so I got it from somewhere else. Good to know about the Empire thing though, is it significantly cheaper?
-
If it's significantly cheaper to order something small as a chain from overseas I think it's time for distro's to sort their shit out.

walker says £40 for the hollow. seriosuly dont want to pay £50
-
yeah 40 for hollow at waller
http://wallerbmx.co.uk/products/odyssey-keychain/ (http://wallerbmx.co.uk/products/odyssey-keychain/)
does anyone know if the solid pin version is even out yet or did they start with the hollow one so the early adopters would have to fork out more?
-
Solid one was sold alongside the hollow, at least on empire it was.
-
But when will Waller have them in?
It says delayed on their site.
-
That £40 price is wrong, I've ordered ours and seen the RRP from the UK supplier. Probably a good idea to jump on them at that price and get one on order! I'll have solid and hollows in stock at the beginning of next week.
-
I've got over 20 of them on my desk now, they're released in the UK.
-
And mine's on the way!
Yay!
-
Alpha bmx have them for the hollow version for 45
-
theyre in stock at wallers. went down yesterday and £40 for hollow
-
Oooooo bargain;)
-
How far is waller from sheff train station lads?
-
Bout 10 min ride
-
Ten minutes, nice one gonna pick a chain up tomorrow.
-
I just got a keychain and upon going to fit the chain, i noticed that the threads in the masterlink feel super tight and rough. G, what should i do? It seems as though the allen bolt doesnt want to tighten all the way up
-

Agreed. One of mine went right in, but the other felt almost like it wanted to cross thread. Mine installed without a hitch other than having to use the old hammer and nut chain break method. Oh, and make sure you don't drop those rollers. And make sure you point the chain the right direction. Okay, as far as chain installs go it was a pain in the ass.
-
Now that it's been out some time what's the general consensus of the half link included?
-

Mine is dialed. Been running it since the summer with a 23/9 and use a ton of pedal pressure on my freecoaster. Not a peep.

against pedal pressure, the clutch in your coaster is probably the weakest link in the chain, so to speak
-
Didn't even need the half link so its all good anyway.
-
First and foremost, I love this chain. I would buy it again. I've been running this since it first came out (usually way too tight), and I'm really hard on chains.
But:

I'll probabibly replace the other two removable pins preemptively.

-
courtesy of warrenty?
Personally, I think those pins are a wear item, and I wouldn't expect Odyssey to replace them.
I'm pretty sure if I cried and moaned enough they would, but as much as I've screwed around with chain tightness, torque on the pins and different lubes, I don't think it would be right to expect that.
-
I keep my chain as tight as it will go and not a peep. Make sure your masterlink pins are screwed in tight and not working themselves loose. I bet that's what happened when your chain broke.
-
I haveny had problems with mine after my link got bent.
-
I got mine as tight as I can get it haven't had Any problems yet I check my pins make sure there tight every time I go ride.
-
they run rough as shit if your chainline is out a little bit. ive only rode mine once before i removed some spacers under my sprocket, but it felt like shit. hopefully itll be better now, and once its worn in a bit
-
still runs like shit, think im gonna have to ditch my driveside guard and oppy rear peg to get it smooth which is a shame
-

How worn were your sprocket and driver? This is typically a much bigger issue, half link chains can rape sprockets and drivers very very quickly.
:)
G.
-
I installed my new keychain on a new 11t Odyssey driver, with a new 31t T-1 sprocket... It's the smoothest setup I've ever felt.
-
My keychain felt ok with my dsg. I took it off when I put a new tire on to get the chain line better and it feels pretty good. Maybe your shits all haggard ben
-
Chain definitely looks rad.
-
Yeah, I replaced the entirety of my drivetrain in order to make the chain not sound like garbage. Now it is buttery smooth, but I dont think I would describe the chain as being smoother than the BSD chain it replaced, as there are a few other factors to consider.
-
dang thing is too short for 39-14
-

I was surprised how short it came, I only had to pull a few links for 31/11 with a 14.1"-ish chainstay.

sprockets kinda old but not worn badly, and driver is fine. i havent ran a half link chain on either. its cos of poor alignment that it feels shit, more the frames fault really for not allowing much clearance for a 28t sprocket
