A general help thread for questions/concerns that you don't feel warrant their own thread.

I wanna trim my front axle down since I'm using an older wheel for the time being. Never trimmed axles, is it just a matter of hacking the excess off and filing down the ends?

Yup, go for it. Just make sure you compensate for how much space a peg will take up on there if you're running one. I've trimmed axles too short years ago and it's a downer.
-

Pretty much. Before you file it down , unscrew and screw back on the nut a few times so you keep the threads clear.

Where would I get a hat washer so that my Odyssey sprocket will fit properly on my Fly V3s? Should the sprockets come with a washer like that?
-
^ It should have come with one, 15/16ths to 22mm tophat washer. Bikeshop should just give you one if they have any.
-

Nope. Only came with a 19mm adapter. I'll draw one up on solidworks and cnc it In school tommorow. Thanks dude.
-
So both my wheels are getting pretty trashed and I have a few questions. I saw some close out spokes on Odyssey's store so I was thinking about picking them up. How do I cut them to length? Also I don't want to pay a bike shop to rebuild my wheels so is it a bad idea to take one back spoke out at a time and replace it with a new one? Then true it at the end?
My second question, I know some people had some problems with vandero 2's getting wobbely and having shit bearings. Is it worth it to replace the bearings and cones and just rebuild that wheel too?
Thanks guys!
-
Is your vandero2 messed up already? If not, just leave it, mine is still going strong.
-
How do I cut them to length?
A dremel with a thin cutting disk will cut through threads without damaging them or leaving any ragged edges, like sawing or snipping them would. You may need to tap the threads longer too.... in which case its probably worth just buying the correct length spokes in the first place. One spoke at a time should work too.
-

Yeah mines fucked..

OK good to know. There odyssey spokes and my wheels are odyssey so I feel like they will fit. When I buy spokes do they come with nips? In the picture there were nips on the spokes.
-
One spoke at a time is gonna be tedious as hell.
Couldn't you use the old nipples?
-
There pretty old and rounded.
-
If you do one spoke at a time its gonna get egged I reckon.
-
Yeah, just build it up fresh. Got to learn sometime.
-
If you do one spoke at a time its gonna get egged I reckon.
what if I do it in a criss cross pattern? Like one then accrpss the wheel?
-
I don't think you would be able to guarantee even tension in the same way you would on a proper wheel build. To be fair, I could be completely wrong, but it just seems like a bodge when you could spend an extra 20 mins doing it properly
-
Buy the right sized spokes and then make a trip down here and I can help you out with it.
Are you allowed to make big boy decisions yet?
Edit:
It wont get egged if you do it correctly...
Loosen ALL spokes, then replace as you go working from the valve stem around. I've done it before and IMO its really not that difficult, but its IS a pain in the arse.
Much easier and beneficial to take them all out and replace... starting from scratch is easier than trying to problem solve each little step...
-
Hahaha I get my license in a few months so well see. But thanks Ethan I'm confident and the way you described it is how I was honna go about it.
BTW-great thread!

You could always wait to drive mommy's car down to orange county and I can make it perfect =D
Quick Question...
I need a good chrome rim other than g-sport/odyssey... if there aren't any I'll go back to 7kas 90 bucks a rim is just a lot to me, and the chrome is pitting on my Primo VS's...
-
Ive been told the chrome on Cinema rims is pretty good.
-
Do 48h lhd hubs even still exist? (LINKS PLEASE!)

Here is one I saw, didn't look hard at all so I am sure there are others out there as well.

Ratchet hub?
Odyssey had a few v3 cassettes on their shop as closeouts
-
Been thinking of getting the S4 stem. Anyone have any input on how they ride/hold up?
-
A lot cracked from what I've heard.
-
Damn! Really? They look pretty beefy.
-
wanna buy mine
-
pictures? how much?
-
Damn! Really? They look pretty beefy.
Yeah but I'm sure they know this so there warranty program is probably good on it. I would look into a Brian Foster stem!
-
2 friends have broke the s4 stem in much the same fashion. Weird.
-
scary?

HAH... I wish I still had rep power!

What's the spacing on a downhill mtb frame? 135mm or 150mm?

Could be either. And it could be 10 or 12mm.
What frame?

Lightest pedals, that aren't plastic?
Do magnesium bodies fall to bits?
-
^would have thought some of those super thin dh ones (various brands seem to do them, not that I can name a single one) would be amongst the lightest.
those primo (or other) drive side guards. they any use or do they just bend in? snapped my chain on a feebs today for the first time in what seems like forever, but might get a guard just to be extra safe in the future.
also ive got a 10t ratchet, will it fit? dans says it fits 9t or less, empire says 10t. im inclined to trust empire more than dans but still want to check.
-
Who knows where to get cone washers for Vandero hubs?
-
Primo said that it will only fit 9t. I had the coalition on my profile hub and it was rubbish. I've started running a blue bird chain and find them to be fairly strong. Running 4 pegs learning oppo on my drive side
-
what size spokes do I need to lace a v2 odyssey cassette to a 7ka rim? i really want to re-lace my wheel and do a overhaul on my hub.
-

i ran one of the primo metal guards over my 9t coaster, but even then had to put an extra spacer under the guard so it would clear my collapse chain. i think youd be very lucky if it would clear a 10 ratchet.
as for the quality of the guard, theyre ok. not great but should be good enough on opposites. my mate had a rhd wheel for a bit and ran the guard on that, his regular grind side, and its now a bit bent and distorted after like 3-4 months.
it was great when i ran it on my coaster, opposite feebles never felt so smooth

36, 3x? 184mm.

think i'll give it a miss then. should probably just learn to grind without hitting my chain instead
-
Anyone know for sure the spoke length for a Chris King to a Ribcage 3x? I'm guessing 184 and 186?
-
I'd second that guess.

I've heard similar to this. Theres also the plastic version. It's not the kind of thing I would put on my bike. I reckon it would suck for wheel clamping, but be a lot better for your chain. I can't imagine plastic would really rip apart your chain links (and the chain won't be moving during a grind when the guard is pushed into it), whereas if metal bends into the chain it would just fuck shit up.
The biggest problem with drive side guards is that they aren't rotatable I guess.
Glands are the best all round, except for the driver...
-
Do they still make Ratchets in 48h or will I have to go used?
And not bike related bit what would happen if Ponochio said 'my nose will grow'. ?
-
Dunno where Irish people order from but source have black 48h ratchets in.
http://www.sourcebmx.com/product/wheels-etc/bmx-hubs/rear-hubs/g-sport-ratchet-cassette-hub/3473.shtml
Don't ask me why I know that.

Awesome. I need to spread more rep before repping you again .

I'm getting chrome forks in the mail and I want them black... Can I just lightly sand the surface and paint over them? Will that be enough for the paint to adhere?
Thnxz
-
How do Almond shoes fit size wise? Comparable to vans?
-
I'd second that guess.
184 or 186 is your answer to every spoke size question ha
-
36h 3x small flange = 186mm 69% of the time, slightly higher flange 184mm the other 69% of the time.
-
Lightest pedals, that aren't plastic?
Do magnesium bodies fall to bits?
No idea about what are the lightest but mag pedals get fucked pretty quick if you like grinding on them. I had the Primo ones, not tenderizers, the one's where the axle didn't go to the end of the body.

You could try powdercoat them.

With the Standard Overload stem, how much do I need to cut the forks down for it to run flush and would a regular stem still work safely with the fork cut down so much?
-

Depends on the headtube length and the forks steerer tube length, you will have to cut more/less depending on the pair. I would suggest measuring your current steerer tube length with you dust cover off and see how much is there... then PM milhous and see if he can measure his for you.
If he still has it... (http://www.bikeguide.org/forums/showthread.php?t=203919)
As long as the steerertube is at-least 3/4 of the way through the stem you're golden.

yea natural is the salmon

Salmon is also best on a Black rim, excellent braking without the awful sqwark of clear pads.

i got mine cheap else i wouldnt have bothered. because the guard is aluminium, the chain wore grooves into the inside of the guard. mine is flattened off on the side which is down when running it on the right, but i reckon i could cut a bit off and it would still work good on the left.
its not the ultimate solution to a drive side hubguard, but it will do the job for a few months
-
whats considered average BB height?
11.625 is in the middle-ish?
-
ya
I think mines like 11.53" which is low end... tech/manual stability
Sunday wave are like ~11.75? can make hop 3's better imo, snappier/taller feeling
also, im going to try a 11.6 or .7 next likely

how much does a tube weigh?
-
how much does a tube weigh?
69 ounces
How thick is it? a 1mm thick danscomp tube weighs 4.7 ounces.
-
hey, rmemeber when some guy went and individually weighed every part of his ratchet hub... anyone got a link to that?
-
Help me, I must be retarded.
I seem to have lost my pedal wrench so I'm trying to take off the pedals with a ratchet with allen key attachment from the inside.
For the left pedal, the ratchet should be set at loosening clockwise or counter, and vice-versa.
These pedals are either on there way too tight or I've gone mental. Reassure me.
Edit: I'm certain I'm doing this properly, Orbs must be the even stronger than I presumed.
-
While the bike is upright...
Spin the wrench towards the front of the bike and you are TIGHTENING
Spin the wrench towards the back of the bike and you are LOOSENING
If its too tight with an allen key grab a small piece of pipe and slide it over the allen key for more leverage... Same can be done with a closed end wrench or the hole in the back of a ratchet or breaker bar.
Other wise hit it with hammers.
-
Yeah turns out I'm not retarded, but still a pussy.
Looks like I'm gonna have to take it to the shop because I only have a mini-ratchet and nothing really for leverage.
-
Crank arm pointing towards front of bike, slightly up from horizontal. Ratchet pointing towards back of bike. Make sure it's in ok then jump on it. As long as your chain doesn't have holes in it you'll be fine.
-
Any one know the max chain stay length on a fbm howler? I've been thinking on swapping from my subrosa to the fbm and I've misplaced my chain breaker again
-
I've got a set of odyssey forks but i dont know what they are. They say odyssey on the dropouts, and other then that the letters CD are engraved into the steerer tube. My guess is classic dirts (CD) but they have 3/8ths drop outs... anyone know?
-
My guess would also be classic dirts, they did do them in 3/8ths aswell as 14mm.
-
My guess would also be classic dirts, they did do them in 3/8ths aswell as 14mm.
alright thanks, thought they only sold them in 14mm.
-
Two seconds with the proper tool at the shop today and I loosened them no problem.
I need to find my goddamn pedal wrench.
-
Anyone know if/when there will be 170mm Thunderbolts?
-
I've got a gold mankind headset that I would like to strip.
I made the assumption it was annodized aluminum but after soaking it in Easy-Off with no change to it, I googled it and found it it's some sort of alloy, unsure of what metals though.
Does anybody know what it would likely be made of and what to use to strip it?
-
Dilute caustic soda crystals should get it off. Dunno who this is, but like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTbE316-Dow). Rinse it pretty good after.

Yeah I came across that video but have had a hard time finding caustic soda/lye/sodium-hydroxide from any stores in Canada. I managed to find one spot but it's a huge amount of it for $20. The search continues.
-
It's drain/sink unblocker, should be in any supermarket. I got a tub to do pretty much and entire bikes worth of parts for £2.
-
Ah ok, I was under the impression it had to be 100% sodium hydroxide, but if it's going to be diluted anyway I guess I don't need that. AH DOY

does anyone know of any existing hub guards on the market that will work with my 3/8" front suzue hub? i know it's a longshot since it's an old hub. i was considering something like the primo n4fl hub guard or the fly front hub guard since they're both cromo but i'm unsure if either would even be compatible. right now with the existing cone nut & lock nut hardware i have about 2mm space between the lock nut and fork dropout on each side. it would be cool if i could just run dual press on guards that eliminate the old hardware entirely.
-
what is the best way to dent a frame from the seat/chainstays for shorter back ends and stuff? My friend has an old Mongoose Shield that is pretty awesome exept when he runs the wheel fully slammed it hits the seatstay bridge and seatstays. thing has like 14.5 chainstays...
-
Is a single half link an option?

If it's the same Suzue hub I had, are you sure you want to be running pegs on it? I snapped the flange on mine landing flat off a hip at the trails, not sure how it would take to peg abuse. Although to be fair I ran it for ages after that.
-
Is a single half link an option?
the weird thing is that the stays easily have 2.25 tire clearance and i think you could fit a 36t on there, but if you try to slam it, the tire rubs the seatstay bridge. actually, you dont even need to slam it, it still rubs when it is not pulled out all the way. i guess it was made for skinny tires or something...but why the big clearance then, i dont know. is it safe to just remove the bridge? if it matters, it has a wishbone at the chainstays...
-
Will the Primo DSG fit around a 10t driver?
-
pretty sure empire says it clears

it's low flange 36h and it's held up to a lot of double peg grinds and toothpick bonks this past year. i've also had friends run the same hubs for years only ever replacing the bearings and upgrading to standard or kink hardened axles. maybe high flange hubs get the flanges gnarled quicker than low flange hubs. i remember my old 48h 3/8" hoffman gack front hub flange got bent in by 1/4" on a grind gone slightly wrong. i've had a few double pegs end up hitting the spokes on this wheel, but the hub flange is still perfect.

Thanks. I was able to get 11 of the old style pawls. So I have 12 new and 11 old. I am only using 6 old and 6 new. If anyone is interested in the extra pawls pm me.

Does anybody remember those custom bars that somebody posted that had gussets on the crossbar? I can't seem to find a picture of them.
-
what is this called? unvert??
-
unvert, or downside invert. If the legs were straight it would be an unlookback, so you're reasoning is correct.
-
I wouldn't worry about it too much, Joe Rich has done a lot of unlookbacks with his front leg bent at the knee, and he's The Ultimate Male

What whipperman chains will work with a 9t ratchet?
-
the basic model does but its rubbish, (Wippermann Whitestar 108 chain)
not sure about the Wippermann Connex 1R8 chain
the large motorbike chain version does not work with a 10 tooth ratchet not enough clearance (Wipperman IG8)

Do profile axles use helicoils? i have owned 2 sets of mini's and it did not look like they did.A kid on another forum is saying that they do which makes me confused. So do they?

Well, I don't think so. The axle must be threaded.
-
Yeah I don't think they use helicoils.

Roadie question:
About 'Problem solvers' (axle nuts). What is with the different sizes? 9 / 10 mm? Then on various websites nuts some are called rear and some are called front?
I got some 10mm x 1mm (what does the 1 mm even stand for?) nuts and they don't fit on either my front axle (goes completely over it) and on the rear (does thread on, but wiggles way too much, too much space, would probably shear thread of if I tighten it...)
Any ideas? Can't find any real info on this anywhere.
-
There are 9 and 10mm axles. The 1mm is the thread pitch I think.
-
what hubguard is this? it's on a 26" though.
google reverse image search says
http://bpfbg.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/fbm-hub-guard.html
and google translate says
"The following are the amps custom hub file corresponds to the profile, racing FIXED / FIXED the REAR HUB
Hub file are you doing? Simple hub wire is the card dry protection
Another effect is the card thing, whether it is dry sub-or cement wood down
Both the intersection rocket launcher slide the hub file instantly have a rallying point for a more stable glide support force,
General hub file both a lock rotation of the frame level of dropouts and the hub the center of the wheel hub file does not move,
Another class Gsport hub hub file file with plastic band the bundled wire, followed by the Wheels Turn. Good or bad a matter of opinion!
Reference to the friends love the card dry!"
no idea what guard it is, but i want to do a rocket launcher slide now.

So my driver is pretty worn out. Bearings are fine just the teeth are worn and the pawls and springs are super worn out and basically fell out when I took my hub apart. The engagment is all sloppy and not as a Profile should be so my question is should I replace the whole driver or just get new pawls and springs, and does anyone know where I can buy a complete driver with bearings and pawls/springs?
Thanks!
-
Get the Primo pawl&springs set, it's about £40 cheaper than Profile ones. If that doesn't sort it get a new driver, you'd have to buy the pawls and springs anyway.
-
What style brake mounts do Magura HS33s use? Is there an adaptor for cantilever mounts?
-
they fit on canti/v brake mounts.
I've seen one ran on a bmx before, so I'm guessing there's some kind of adaptor that goes from 990 > canti mounts
edit: had a quick google and can't seem to find any adaptors. even if you got one made it'd probably flex a fair bit. why do you want to run a hs33 anyway?
-
Eggit run some upside down on 990 mounts, said they were awesome but the lever sucked
-

-
Nope, but they use the same(ish) pawls and springs. The Primo ones seem to last longer.
-
Anyone know the site of those super nice wooden bike racks?

My seat system is making all sorts of noises when I sit down n peddle. It's a fly post to a senior 2. Everything's tight but it makes the grossest noises! I'm haven't had a railed post since like before pivotal seats came out n I never remembered having this issue so I'm thinking it's the fly post. I love the looks of the fly post but I hate the noise so I came here...
Anyone else had weird problems like this with a fly post and/or senior 2 seat.
Thnxz :)

My Fly post doesn't make a noise. It does come loose randomly though, maybe check that. I imagine it shouldn't make noise if it can't move.
-
I just double checked everything n the post is sturdy n all is well with it. The rails on my seat are kinda loose. I can jiggle the saddle and I'm betting that's the problem. I tightened the little bolts down n it's still wobbly. New seat time :(

Anyone know the site of those super nice wooden bike racks?
The dude on here had a Velo Orange rack but he made the wooden slats himself.
Copenhagen parts have one like that but its welded to the bars.
If this is for your Beach cruiser check out fastboyfenders. They have some good deals on lately.
-
Pauls Comp. also make nice ones
-
The bearing size for a 9 tooth odyssey driver is 6902 right?
-
9 t odyssey drivers use needle bearings and not cartridge bearings. If it doesn't say Odyssey on the driver, it is probably another brand's driver that fits an ODY hub.
It should say the bearing number on the seal, if that helps.
-
If I get one of those rhd/lhd profile drivers I can use it in my rhd hubshell as LHD?
-
no cant swap the drive side of profile shells due to the angle of the teeth that the pawls in the shell.
or so i was told when i wanted to do that with my mini
-
Correct GUMP. The driver works for both LHD and RHD hubshells. It does not change your hubshell from RHD to LHD.
-
awesome, my sentence structure was shite but i was right, still should avoid forums when im not sober
-
Damn well I hope someone makes a good driveside guard for profile.
-
Profile have just released one for their hubs. Sketchphoto has one in his bike check.

It looks pretty good too. Doesn't look like it will fold up after a couple grinds.

I believe gloss actually. Sunday didn't offer black in their line up until the Vinnie colorway came out.

-
how normal is it that my drive side cone nut on my profile mini cassette keeps loosening up?
-
Right, im in the market for some new cranks.
I really dont know whats out there crank wise. Ive only ever run Power/Hollowbites & Profiles so id like something a little different. My only real request is that they are 170mm.
-
The Eclat cranks are supposed to be really good, few friends have them who normally break loads of shit and they're sound. No idea about 170mm though, maybe.
-
My friend has a set of original Eclat cranks, They seem pretty nice. I like the new Onyx ones too actually. Does anyone know if Thunderbolts come in 170mm?
-
Help me 3 table! I try n put them together but it's not working out at all! I barely get the bike sideways.
-
dumb question but if my fork dropouts are bent inwards about halfway and then outwards are they properly fucked?
they are s&m pitchforks xlt-l, first gen of the tapered ones one of the first ones to leave the factory so about 2.5 years old

it looks worse in real life, pictures are terrible I know
anyone know if I still have warranty? didn't send in the warranty card when I bought them tough...
-
Does anybody actually send in that card? My frame said I had to send the card within 30 days to get a years warranty. Didn't see the point.
-

I always figured it was really important..then I usually forget to send them in, must have at least 10 of those cards somewhere around here, think they would warrant it? and is it really fucked?
-
I would not keep riding those forks. XLTs make me nervous as is, forget about a set with wonky dropouts.
-
When i got my Kink last year i sent it off & got a little letter back saying they had my back & i got a load of stickers too.
On a side note....
Has anyone heard anything about the Animal Female Javelin Cassette? They showed it at interbike last year & as they have a load of new stuff hitting shops right now, just wondered if the hub will make it too?
-
haven't heard anything about it and sorry for bitching but a mix/profile/rachet would suit anyone way better and are my forks going to fail and break into pieces?

Probably not
-
Hmmmm, will probably end up getting another Ratchet then.
-
'nother quick question....
How much rise does the Cult Salvation stem have? Im gunna get Cult Hawk bars & want to run them a little higher than the 8" Looking around 8.25"-ish.
Cheers.
-
Did some searching, and a few sources say 31.8mm rise on the Cult Salvation stem
-
hi guys, i have a odyssey vandero v2 front hub and two front BSD hubguards especific for it , and it had some problems, i wanna change my hub and keep the hub guards. Any another hub fit's on that hub guards?
thanks
-
I dont know of any off the top of my head but i hope this helps. Anything with a 17mm Axle should be good to fit the BSD Guards, you might have to mod them slightly due to the different collar width.
-
I'm gettin the old 20 incher out, shes a bit rusty and in need of a new back wheel.
My question to you guys is whats the best rear wheel setup out there now? I've noticed that theres a bunch of new stuff now that i've never heard of.

HAHA. You love you some Ratchet hub.
Been letting the hand fly off in the tables yet? I let a couple fly last week. Nothing sweet really happened though.

This deal is crazy (http://store.odysseybmx.com/wheelkitg-sport48hribcagerimwitha48holeratchethub9tdriverand184mmodysseyspokes.aspx). I almost want to buy it despite my current Odyssey cassette/7KA working just fine and being lighter and not giving me headaches that the Ratchet has a reputation of.

What the shit is up with those lines in the road? They painters get drunk on the job over there or what?! haha
-
They probably just put extra random lines in so they could spend an extra day blocking the road.

That is damn crazy!!! Dream wheel for sure haha, but unfortunately I'm not situated in the states, otherwise I'd buy that shit right now!
-
so the ratchets are shit? what is the best cassette running?
-
I don't think there is a best, they pretty much all suck in different ways.
-
I don't think there is a best, they pretty much all suck in different ways.
ahh gotcha, i think ill just go with the odsy v3 and a hazard, they been around for awhile
-
Ignore Tom, get a Ratchet. The engagement isnt the best but its the last hub you'll ever need to buy.
-
anything shitty about the v3's ? i found a good deal on those
-
anything shitty about the v3's ? i found a good deal on those
Ehh.
-
The v3 didn't suit my riding I'm more a sketchy pegs person so the extra burlyness off the ratchet added peice of mind with a Ti axlE to helP save weight
-
I've always liked the Odyssey cassettes, however, I know they've been hit and miss. For the price it's not exactly a huge gamble. Can't really go wrong with a Ratchet either, but some people say they have a noticeable amount of driver lag. I never felt it but I'm also used to running a freecoaster.
-
Ignore Tom, get a Ratchet. The engagement isnt the best but its the last hub you'll ever need to buy.
This is correct, they do seem to be willing to send you replacement parts on a weekly basis :p
-
I like me chosen hub, reliable, light, cheap, all round badman of a hub. Animal, Bicycle Union, Colony, Proper etc sell them
-
anything shitty about the v3's ? i found a good deal on those
Mine has been great. I use the 3/8 female swap and I am pegless.
-
Anybody know the largest size sprocket I could fit on a Rueben?
Anyone run an MDS 30?
-
Ruben himself ran a 30t
-
Ruben himself ran a 30t
yah, but with a guard, it'd be larger than 30.
just wanting to put something bigger without a bad chainline.
also, have read on other threads guys saying it was tight.
the hub is a profile mini.
thanks,
-
My friend had trouble fitting a 28 on a Ruben frame, so much so that he just put his old frame back together.
-
I had a 30t logan's run on my old ruben, it fitted fine.
-
Keep in mind that the Rubens with longer TTs also have longer chainstays.
-
yet another quick question, about to order a fit wifi in 21 inch, just curious since I've never had a frame with super short chain stays so will it spin super fast and loop out on fast stuff?
-
Pretty much. If you have big bars expect it to loop out quicker too.
-
Pretty much. If you have big bars expect it to loop out quicker too.
ahhh can't wait! I have fit sky highs at the moment cut down to 28 so it should work out fine, thanks
-
You should be fine, i was running 8.5's on a 13.25" it was all over the place. Cut my steerer tube down & dropped the bars to 8.25's & it was pretty sweet.
-
Will a 2.35 momentum tyre fit slammed on a FIT Mac frame?
-
where can i buy the circlip for a ratchet? if this is even avaiable.
-
where can i buy the circlip for a ratchet? if this is even avaiable.
Look in the Ratchet problems thread, someone says what they are.
Edit: Smalley WH-112 retaining ring
-
Im just so kewl
-
Stupid question but a 30t mds with guard will fit on older Sunday frames with a decent chain line?
Mates selling me his pretty sure it's a 2nd wave or someshit
-
yes they fit on all the longer chainstay sundays.
-
does nipple length matter with wheels?
i got the right spokes according to pijin but went for 12mm nips because I didn't think it would matter but mostly because they are black
is mistake?
ps I got 100 194mm black padded cell spokes with silver nips for £7.50 off winstanleys. and they arrived. bargain
-
Im pretty sure most nipples are 14mm or 16mm. The ones you have might be too short...
-

dt swiss offers 12mm nips

The short ones are annoying but they'll work fine.
-
Am I going to loose to many bg points by running a 9 tooth 48 spoke ratchet on a old sunday frame with a 30 t mds?
-
That's like, infinity BG points.
-
By the sounds of it you'll lose negative points
-
I thought the 9t might work against me. Can't wait to build the bike up
-
You will have an abundance of cool points coming your way
-
I thought the 9t might work against me. Can't wait to build the bike up
I thought it was cool to have a small crank.
-
9t is small child cool. 10t is basic driver size for bg, cool points start there and increase with each extra tooth
-
Speaking of 10t, are 10t ratchets or even just the drivers in production any more? I'm having trouble finding one. I'd be fine with 28/9, but I love my brake too much(chainstay brakes with little clearance)
-
I thought I saw one on empire but they only have 9t now maybe dans?
-
Madera 3/8ths Hubs with Hub Guards & Blue6 Ti Hex Head Bolts = Pegable?
-
I did it for a while. I broke a couple bolts(tightening them every time), and the center axle eventually.
-
Hmmm, well i only ride once or twice a week. Not super heavy on my pegs & i highly doubt i could break a blue6 bolt & if i did they'd be replaced for free. It is the center axle that im worried about. Ill give it a think, Cheers.
Edit: Wonder if Couch could make me custom axles for the madera hubs?
-
I'm sure he could. It's 17mm at the ends and 14mm in the center. 14mm thick aluminum is just not enough for pegs. The early Fly axles tapered to 15mm in the middle from 17 and they broke a lot. You've got 2 good options there. Chromoly axle the size of the stock one with 17mm outer and 14 or 15mm inner, or 17mm aluminum all the way through. I'd suggest 3/8x24 either way. With 17mm 7075 all the way through you'd have the axle strength of the Vandero 2.
-
Thats pretty much what i was thinking John, Then if its possible (which im sure it will be) Getting a 3/8ths to 14mm Axle adaptor on the hub & cog guards & running 3/8ths pegs in the rear.
-
Yeah, they're borderline in the front with the Race axle and pegs. I wouldn't even consider it in the rear.
You could have a Profile chromoly axle cut, drilled, and tapped for bolts. But with the price of the axle, it could even cost less to have one made out of 4130 stock.
-
Im pretty sure ill go with 17mm straight through 7075 3/8ths full female axle & G-sport bolts front & back.
-
That sounds like the way to go.
-
Would sunday warranty a cracked second wave without a warranty card?
-
Would sunday warranty a cracked second wave without a warranty card?
they should, try to take it to your lbs and have them call it in. It'll be more official that way. We've done it for some sunday forks before with no card and no problems.
-
Was there any difference in the drop outs on the first wave compared to which ever wave had the inbuilt chain tensioners?
Been thinking of trying to do some home job versions
-

It's weird, I have the warranty for this second wave that I bought new then I traded if and its been floating around and a kid cracked it I guess and he said they are going to warranty it, just wanted to know if anyone had any luck doing so.
-
Remember when someone on here was stressing about lending someone a frame and then they warrantied it and only gave them like 30 quid or something
-
This could be a really stupid question but if I cut the flange off let's say ruben grips could I use them with lock collars on a mtb?
-
This could be a really stupid question but if I cut the flange off let's say ruben grips could I use them with lock collars on a mtb?
If you mean use them like Odi Lock-Ons then no. The real question is why would you want to use such slippery grips?
-

I was just using Rubens as an example. I'd most likely use something thicker and gummier.
And someone change my name back. I'm not bluemeate

never had a warranty card for any of my odyssey or sunday stuff and they've all been accepted.

anyone know if there's a way to take a freewheel off a hub without one of those specialty tools?
-
do you want to keep it?
-
yeah i do. i know you can spin off the bearing sheild/cover and knock the bearings out and use the a vice to spin the threaded bit off but i want to put the freewheel on another bike..
-
Hammer and a punch is always an option. It usually demolishes the prongs making a second removal (with or without the proper tool) not so fun.
-
Anyone having issues with their V3 hazard hub? My hub has recently started to skip and makes a loud popping noise when it does.
-
those hubs tend to skip. Someone will chime in and tell you to do proper maintenence.
-
yeah tear that sucker apart clean it and throw a little grease in it. if it still happens then you have something to worry about
-
Replace the pawls every now and then. They're like $2 with a new c-clip. Mine's skipping cause the pawls are too worn down.
-
Problem sorted out! All she needed was a little grease.
-
I know im being a picky, But..... Im looking at getting Shiv2 forks for my Marv frame but i want the colours to match. On the Fit site they look Flat Black, but in the pictures ive seen of them on bikes they look similar to the Marv frame. Anyone running this combo? Pictures at all? Cheers guys.

Matching different black paints is a PITA... I have no real advice though. Call Fit and ask?
-
I know right! Ive just emailed them & asked. Also emailed the shop i bought the frame from & will most probably be buying the forks from so they can match them up & take a look.
-
They are flat, well on my friends they are.
-
Don't get shivs would be my only advice. They look fucking scary and having a part on your bike that you don't trust is fucking shit.

How "bad" is it that on my back axle, none peg side, I have 2 or so threads worth of axle not reaching the end of the bolt? Like its not flush.
Had to take an angle grinder to it too get the previous bolt off as it was threaded to fuck on the end and I ran out of ideas.
-
not bad at all, atleast i wouldnt say so
-
do the sleeves on butchers not reach the end of the peg or is it just mine?
-
Will the 14mm GDH axle for a Profile Mini work in an Elite and vice versa?
For the rear.
-
After some poking around the Profile site. I have concluded the answer is no.
-
i got that ratchet/ribcage deal recently, and installed a 10t driver. if i run the metal bash washer my driver binds up and backpedaling takes more force. if i run it without the supplied bash washer it skips and the chain rubs on the hub shell. what can i do? i've read and re-read the ratchet hub help/problems thread (http://www.bikeguide.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3544397) and haven't found anything useful.
-
do the sleeves on butchers not reach the end of the peg or is it just mine?
The sleeves on mine extend about 1mm past the peg.
-
Are you sure you have the spacers/plastic washers etc in the right way?
-
Edit: Dont worry...
-
So what's the deal with the remix hub? Why do people diss on that but swear by the mix? i'm looking for a new back hub and this looks pretty promising. Just wondering if there is any difference besides the shell.
-
^^ have a look at the ody's new Antigram hub too, ratchet internals apparantly, with a lighter shell/ axle setup
-

I actually saw that. I wonder when it's supposed to be out. That, a mix and that new Shadow BTR hub are all my top three choices right now.
-

think it uses those shitty 6802 bearings which are in khe coaster drivers and are generally piss weak
-
Uneven flanges. Fuck that noise
-
The creaking of powerbites is solved by greasing the spindle? My shadow cranks sound like shit and I'm 95% sure the spindle is greased. Either that or it is the noise of my ruben pedals that are bent to shit.

Lucky Strike. I put a 44t on mine for laffs.

Right, it'd been a while since I've had a rear one apart. I was thinking about the front hub when I made that post.

Fit mac I used just the thin bb bearing spacer , it's close though.

Best answer I have for you right now is hopefully with in 2-3 months, but nothing is for certain on that. If they don't make it by the summer they should be in stock around the world by Sept. All of the Odyssey distros have placed orders for these hubs, which is essentially the final step before the part releases.
-
will going to back to a 20.75 with a longer backend, about 13.65 feel very different?
now on a 21 with 13.2/3 backend, yess I've asked this before but I'm not so familiar with chain stay lengths and how they respond
found a new fit eddie v3 for less then what I can sell my current frame for and I've always wanted one!
-
Yes it will feel different.
Will you care, probably not. You're probably going to like the frame you wanted more than a frame you didn't want as much.

just saw that. thanks!
-
is normal that my 41thermal cranks being so tight when i try to put in the spindle? anyone had this problem?
-
That's completely normal for spline cranks without pinch bolts. You want it to be as tight as possible in fact
-
is this right? the spacer is big enough, do the ends of the wedge cluster stick out a little or am I doing something wrong? i followed the instructions and watched jim bauer install twombolts in a video.
-
From my limited knowledge of Odyssey cranks & just watching the video, it looks pretty good.
-
Mine look like that. Been riding them since Christmas time no problem.
-
Yes that's fine. More important is spacer thickness as you mentioned. If you haven't; remove the bolt, how close is the spindle to contacting the underside of the bolt? you dont want the spindle to bottom out on the bolt. or the bolt to bottom out on the spindle however you want to think about it.
-
I also want something that will fit a generic BMX stem.
I don't think any drop bars come in a 22.2 clamp diameter.

Anyone?
-
i'm sure they're fine. you won't break them :)
-
Anyone?
They're gonna be horribly uncomfortable on the top. Plus a pretty defined transition to the hoods if you run brakes. Other than that, a typical track drop with a ton of flex. But you wouldn't notice if 31.8 bars didn't exist.
-
With road bikes is it best to replace the chain when its stretched past 1mm (according to a chain checker) or just keep running it til the cassette needs replacing due to slipping anyway and do them both? Cos my chain seems to be stretched but I've only done about 700 miles on the bike, not sure what a good mileage is for road bike drivetrains.

Anyone on here run a 36/10 gearing? How does it feel?
Building my old Barcode up, only have a 10T rear wheel and need a 36T sprocket to clear my brake.
-
I've ridden 39/11 which is very similar and it was quite hard. A good pedal or 2 and you're flying. If your riding requires little pedaling and more pumping you'll prolly like it.
-
Going to be riding trails mainly so it shouldn't be too bad. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
-
That's proper Tee. I personally ride almost all fast park so I too want something harder.
I'm on 30/10 now but does anyone know if a 33 with fit on a s&m CW v2 with a decent chain line?
-
This Brooks seat is "proper" for a track bike right?
-
Just get what you want. Look for a used turbo or something like that on CL and save yourself a ton of money. To answer your question though, I loved my Brooks when I had it. I prefer the Swallow saddle though.
-
Brooks seats aren't track seats, so no it isn't "proper". It is comfortable, though. I ride a Swift on my road bike, but wouldn't put one on a track bike. Commuters and ss/fixed bikes used on streets are a different story.
-
I just bought a nos RNC lite sprocket (28t). Will it fit my first generation Wombolts? (I've been out of the bmx thing for awhile. Can't wait to start riding again)
-
Probably not, Odyssey Wom/Twom/Thunderbolt cranks have a 15/16" "lip" where the sprocket sits. You will need to get it machined out a hair if you want to use it.
-
Pretty sure the rnc is 22mm bore
-
How do those velcro pedal straps hold up compared to cages? I have some cheap cages with leather straps that are slipping so I wanna look into straps instead.
-
how do i know if my elementry is too tight or not tight enough...i mean i still want it to be able to slip if i land hard enough...
-
Don't you just tighten it until the bolt is at the end of the wedge? Any further and it's overtightened or something.
-
Tighten with normal length 8mm, stop when palm hurts
-
What are the best pads for black/worn down rims? Can't afford or justify getting a chrome one at the minute. My brakes are shit at the minute. The caliper is just a cheap Rush one as well, will I ever get it working well with that?
-
I have been having problems with my hands going numb or hurting while riding my Bianchi San Jose. I am riding the stock stem and bars. I was thinking of trying a shorter stem and cutting my bars to bull horns instead of drop bars. Any other advice would be appreciated.

Clear ones work best but most make loads of noise.

Are you new to road biking? I found I had this problem when I first started but it went away after a while.. try moving your hands around more or maybe try some specialized BG padded gloves, I've heard they can help. I almost always ride on the hoods on my road bike, never seem to get problems.
-
I am relatively new, I have had this bike for a while but it doesn't get a massive amount of use. I usually ride on top of the drops basically where hoods would be, if the guy I bought the bike from gave me the brakes.
-
would Primo warranty my powerbite arm for pedal wobble even if I warrantied them once before and I don't have a reciept haha. Or should I just JB weld the pedal boss?

Probably not, they wouldn't warranty mine or sell me replacement pedal bosses. The crank arms are fine but I can't get bosses for them, and I'd pay money to fix them. But after the responses I got, I will never buy anything Primo again.

Can the cult os v2 fit a 30t?

Tips to use as a spacer for the sprocket bolt? Got about a 3mm gap, so I can't tighten the sprocket bolt, or the sprocket wouldn't be straight.
Or should I just ask the LBS?

i've only seen a sprocket bolt spacer once since i started riding. most places don't really have them (never hurt to ask tho, of course). a few options off the top of my head:
1. i'm assuming you spaced out the sprocket from the crank arm at the moment? it's good for alignment yes, but an ill fitted sprocket bolt/space will give you more problems. go the second best route of spacing the sprocket out instead
2. machine one from a small diameter spacer, if you have access to the tools. it's not hard to drill a hole to correct size, will need a bit more sophistication to make it 3mm thick tho - and if you're already doing this, you might as well consider option 3
3. machine a single unit spacer. basically just a flat piece of metal at consistent thickness, then you drill one hole for the crankarm axle and one for the sprocket bolt. it'd be nice and clean this way, and you'll ensure the two areas are spaced the same amount. *do note to use steel/7075 tho, i've used 6xxx series before, worked well for a while but the crankarm axle hole experienced some crushing.

Cheers man! Oh yeah, I might have had a spacer on axle between the arm and the sprocket. Weird that if I didn't notice it when mounting the sprocket though. I'll check when I get home.
Got Flybikes v1 cranks and a 25t Odyssey Vermont sprocket with adapter to fit the cranks (the adapter adds maybe 1mm of gap). But all this was working alright with my 36t wtp sprocket.
-
Put the adapter through the other side of the sprocket.
-
Put the adapter through the other side of the sprocket.
I shall try that. Took forever to get it out of the old sprocket and into the new one though.
-
You could eliminate the spacer for the sprocket bolt entirely if you got a a grub screw or a bolt long enough to bottom out inside the crank arm before it hit the sprocket

Charles over at B6 made me a Ti one of these for my Twombolts. I love it.
-
Put the adapter through the other side of the sprocket.
This worked. Cheers
-
Just got my Cult Sect V2 fork & the drop outs are TINY, ive emailed Cult but i thought id try here also.. Is anyone running Butcher pegs with sleeves on sect v2 forks?
Cheers.

In that new Fox edit Hawk is running butchers, so I'd assume that they work!
-
I have a feeling Mr.Hawk is running odyssey forks :/
-
If I wanna JB weld my powerbite pedal boss do I just smear some all over it or is there an actually art of doing it?
-
Jb weld the shit out of all the threads.
Crank that bitch tight ass fuck
allow more then enough time to bond
if a pedal is stuck remove then
-
The threads where the pedal goes in? Or actually take the pedal boss out and do those threads?
-
Or actually take the pedal boss out and do those threads?
This

Yeah, don't JB weld your pedal on.
-
Anyone know the biggest tire I can fit in the rear on a fit CR24?
-
When I tightened the bolts on my eject hub, it made the sound of loose spokes. I was able to tighten it them though. Axle fucked up?
-
Nope.
-
Nothing wrong? I pulled out the bolts to see if the thread got fucked, but they looked as new.
-
Maybe grease the threads a bit but I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Most wheels I've had have done it since new. 3 clicks and you're in.
-
So my hombe brake is like rubbing and not springing back. When I tighten it down it just stays where it is and if I try to move it it just stays where I moved it. I have chain stay mounts and it looks the arm is rubbing on the frame? The left arm works fine.
-
Shortened the chain quite a bit (smaller sprocket etc), but am now riding with the axle sticking out of the dropout 2-3mm. I was maybe 1mm away from riding it slammed.
Question: Riding it for a week or so, is there possibility of the chain stretching enough to remove the whole link (ie 1mm), or should I just get a half link and find myself somewhere in the middle? It's a Shimano chain, and it's been ridden a few years.
25t/9t on 1st Fit Hawk (13.75 slammed I think).
-
I would get a new chain if I was in your shoes.
-
I generally replace chains every 6 months. I've been bad about it lately, hoping I don't start snapping links.
-
Odyssey Bluebird
Cult 510
Eclat Diesel
Im sure theres probably more out there too, they come with a pre-installed half link. Ive had the Bluebird & the Cult, both excellent chains. Getting an Eclat for the new build too.
-
I've got the Eclat chain at the moment. It's definitely a chain. I'd probably get the Cult one if you can though, it's about £8 cheaper than the Eclat and £12 cheaper than the Odyssey. Still a chain too I imagine.
-
Does anyone have pictures of Eclat tibia crankarms with a Fly spinde? I know it can be done & im sure ive seen someone on here thats done it. I just want to see how everything mates up as im considering doing it myself.
-
Where are the T1 bars made?
-
The new ones 8", 8.25", 8.85", Ruben & Salt City are all made in Taiwan.
-
Damn, well I think I'm still going to be getting the Rubens sometime soon. My Cults have been through hell and I think it's time to retire them.
-
Will a 2009 Hamilton frame fit a 33T sprocket?
-
Anyone try Eclat Plaza pedals?
-
Will a 2009 Hamilton frame fit a 33T sprocket?
I'd imagine so. Mine is 08/09 (I think, something like that) and I fit a 36t on there with no issues.
-
Fly V1 cranks gets loose every time riding. How to fix?
Fit Hawk, Fly V1 cranks, Vermont sprocket with adapter.
-
Allen key
-
Allen key
And elbow grease.
But ferrillz. You can try loctite. If that keeps happening you can try some plumbers tape or something of the sort on the spindle.
-
loctite
-
Has anyone tried the Primo binary pegs? There pretty cheap and seem deece.
http://www.danscomp.com/518110.php
-
I don't like the idea of the knurls digging into the dropout on em.
-
Ahh I see what your saying. Maybe I'll just get some Cults again, they slid pretty well.
-
Anyone try Eclat Plaza pedals?
Yeah, a friend has them. Grippy and huge.
-
Stranger Coastersaurus....
I cant remember who it was, said there was going to be hub guards for both drive & non drive side that replaced the cones & lock nuts. Does anyone know anymore about this? More importantly than specs etc, when?
-

Saw some kid at the skatepark, doesn't really ride hard. his Primo pegs were dented flat totally D shaped
Solid Pegs are pretty nice too 4140 seem too wear ok

Damn, why are pegs so expensive now?
-
pegs are pegs. just get some steel ones off a complete, theyll be fine
-
Anyone try Eclat Plaza pedals?
I ride them. They're super nice, wide body, slide super fast (don't know if you're into that), and grip amazing.
-
Russell wants mega light pegs that will last him forever and don't cost that much.
I want a super hot girlfriend who is low-maintenance and a really nice person too.

We already went over this! I want j-pegs!

Primo pegs are good. I'm not a fan of rotating them because it looks shitty, but theyre holding just fine.
My jpegs were the worst pegs I ever threw away.

Hey Guise!
Quicky... Is there any difference (other than the length & socket drive) between the Flatware Thunderbolts & regular Thunderbolts? Now that Odyssey is going to offer "street" sized sprockets for socket drive im thinking of getting the Flatwares for Project "streetland" ;)
-
You get way too many bike things. Only viable option is to give me your SFA.
-
I believe the flatware cranks are thinner? or something
-
Hmmm that could be a problem then... dont want to dent the living beejesus out of them. Might have to email odyssey & Confirm this.
-
Does anyone have suggestions for grips that work well with super sweaty hands?
-
gloves
other than that really old, worn in and soft longnecks have served me well.
really had a problem with sweaty hands and other grips too!
-
I like my Rubens, but one solution could be to get gloves
-
one thing I was told about dealing with really sweaty hands, is to take bar soap wet the soap and cover your hands in it. Like really layer it on. Then rub it all over your grips, Then let the grips dry in the sun. The soap kinda acts like antiperspirant for your hands. this works well especially for Rubens.
-
Grip Gloves if they are still in business.

I ride in Texas and I would just end up covering the front end of my bike in soap suds...haha.
PS-- I have a pair of grip gloves in my office!! Up for grabs if anybody wants them. Somebody put them on my bike as a joke. A joke that failed at being funny.

Yea, those cranks are "recommended for flat use only." The 170mm RHD Thunderbolts are coming very soon.
-
I have sorta sweaty hands when I ride and I'm liking the united Williams grips
-
Can anyone give me the head tube length of a federal frame?
I hope its 110mm
-
Fit Mac Bars.... Im digging the upsweep & the straight gauge tubing, however not too keen on the width, normally i wouldnt give two shits & just cut them down but they have the wider radius'. So i need to know, those who have them can you cut them down to 27" with 150mm grips without them being on the bend? I want the grips right on the bends as is the way, just not actually on them.
-
Do you have the bars now? If so then push your grips down and see. If not then tell me to shut up.
-
Haha, guess i have to tell you to shut up then :)
-
Im riding Mac bars cut to 27.5" with ody cufflinks - had to cut them about 1/4" to keep them off the bends.
-
^ Cheers, I could probably live with 27.5"
-
Does anyone have a Duo Fat Perf seat? Whats the padding like? Is it soft & squishy or like alot of other mid/fat seats with rock hard padding?
Cheers
-
I saw the Perf seat at a shop. It seems pretty soft although looks very bulbous. Its kinda a strange looking seat

3 questions:
Is there a feasible way for me to shorten my 175mm Powerbites to 160mm?
Or is there a way I can make my 175mm Powerbites feel like 160mm?
Or should I just stop being a nonce and deal with it?
Edit: fuck it, 5 questions:
what's the best guard sprocket about these days? dual guard MDS? will it fit powerbite cranks? (I remember reading a file is needed, I own a file so that's fine)
also are cranks measured centre of bb spindle to centre of pedal spindle? my powerbites are so beat they don't seem to have any measurements stamped anywhere
-
Being that Powers are solid you could make a pedal boss further up the arm :o You'd need some weird size taps (one being a lefty) and to take some material off to get it all square. Probably have to move it more than 5-15mm too. Pretty ridiculous job
MDS is good, to fit it to Powers you file down the corner next to the sprocket bolt hole
___/
so it's squarer
___|
-
All depends on what size mds your going to run I had a 27 that needed cutting or run flipped pretty sure my 30 would clear
-
Yeah Hufnagel I figured it would be a daft job that's far beyond my capabilities of hitting things with hammers until they work but I asked anyway. I think I'll get used to it soon enough anyway, just been riding 160mm flatware cranks and it feels very strange now.
The sprocket will clear the frame for sure, Ive had a 36t tree on there before with no issues, filing down the wee edge should be no problem. Thanks pals
-
So guys, ive got the FBM coming & when it arrives its going to be built up with all new parts. Im gunna get Solid cranks but, my question for you is....
Due to the short chainstays i cant run an MDS so, im going to run a beefy chain & a thick sprocket. Im pretty sure the thickest sprocket is 8mm but for the life of my i cant remember what it is. What sprockets come in 8mm, i could live with a sprocket thats 8mm & tapers to 6mm in the middle but what options do i have sprocket wise?
Cheers.
-
OG Tree sprockets are 8mm.
-
Get a Solid sprocket.
Can't really, they're sold out.
-
I knew i had an OG, OG sprocket lying around somewhere. 25t Raw US made OG sprocket, I have it sat next to me right now, its abit dirty im gunna get some alloy wheel polish on it & clean it up abit tommorow.
-
I have the fit mac and want to slam my wheel. i have a 9t in the back, What size sprocket will i need with a half link chain?
Rear end length is 13.35 slammed btw.

I'm a fucking idiot.. thanks man!

Its all good man, happens to us all. Good luck!

It'll be longer for a stretched chain and/or worn sprocket/driver. It'll be shorter for chain misalignment. Bent frames mess it up too. And some frames' rear ends are measured to the centre of a slammed axle, to the front of a slammed axle, to the centre of an axle in the middle of the drops, or to the front of an axle in the middle of the drops. Not sure how Fit does it :o
-
Nevermind

How to tell the difference between V1 Funday and V2????

How to tell the difference between V1 Funday and V2????
V1 Funday did not have removable mounts. V2 has removable mounts and the cable channel under the top tube.

So, im 50/50 on handle bars right now. Im either gunna get custom Solid bars or Bonedeth Deadman 4piecers, Has anyone actually run the Bonedeths? I know some people will think theyre ugly but i like them so look doesnt bother me, Im guessing as theyre made by Bonedeth they will be ultra mega tough haha. Let me know.
-
I've run two pairs of the bd 4bars. And I have to say they are the best feeling bars I've ever run. If you can I'd prob get the v2's, I had a chrome pair first and I managed to bend one side (or at least they looked bent).
I don't know if you've looked at the t1 bars look decent aswell
-
Funnily enough i had been looking at the T-1 bars too. I think im pretty set on either the 8.5" B.D bars or slightly bigger custom Solids. Thanks for the info about the V.1s, i will look into the V.2s for sure.
-
Big Ben also had the bd's and had no dramas from memory. Custom standard strips are nice too I've got them at te moment
-
The Bonedeth bars seem to be gash. I suppose if you buy them then you're probably meant to be jumping of the world but less bending would be cool.

I broke Felt and Fly bars within 2 months of each other. Then went for the Bonedeth Bomber bars, so far they've been holding up on me.

I have heard that the Eclat Pulse hub guard fits the Animal Javelin front hub, can anyone confirm this? Is anyone actually running this set up?

Anyone know who stocks replacement Primo Mix axles in the UK?
-
with white components such as hubs, headset caps etc. how are they coloured? i presume they're not anodized? asking as i want to strip them.
-
Nitromors should do it man, they'll be powdercoated.
-
Anyone know who stocks replacement Primo Mix axles in the UK?
There was a thread I made about a guy on Ebay doing axles and stuff to spec. I personally tried to get one straight from the distro, but they wouldn't deal with me at all. Just gave me some links to Alansbmx, etc.
Best bet is to phone up some shops, see whos got one in stock. Then if you can't find any, return to the distro and tell them you need one and cant get a hold of one.
-
will i ever get my bike under 20lbs?
-
Ti bolts on everything, 3/8ths axles, Drilled out or aero shaped rims, Double butted spokes, Alloy nipples, Super light tubes, Skinny kevlar bead tyres, plastic pegs, pedals & bar ends, One of those seat/post combo deals & parts that are machined/have cut outs. I think that would drop some weight, whats your bike weigh right now?

Was able to get my campillo under 20lbs without any of this.

Hello chaps, last night I did a massive 6inch air, went otb and sent my bike straight to the deck where my brake lever decided to give up.
My question for you is: what cheap brake levers have those hinged clamps which mean you can take them off without taking your grips off? I would like to 'upgrade', but it's quite difficult to tell in a lot of the product photos online.
-
All of the Odyssey levers are hinged.
-
Pretty much all of them are hinged now. Look for one where the bolt is on top, or get a left-pull lever with the bottom-bolt; your thumb will thank you.
-
Odyssey levers are awesome, and hinged.
-
Get a dirt Harry, or a gold finger. Both hinged and cheap
-
Cheers boys, got a gold finger, liking it so far but not sure whether I'll be able to find it very quickly in an emergency - it's tiny!
-
Anybody have any experience with brakes on a stripped rim?
-
All the anodise has worn off mine. Still works decent.
-
I got new bearings for my front hub because I was paranoid after I fell off. New ones make the hub wobble. Put old ones back in, no wobble. I got ZZ bearings rather than RS because the internet said that would get me more fasts, is that the reason for the wobble? Or just crappy bearings?
-
I thought zz and rs were to do with the seal on the bearing, not the size. The seats of for the bearings might be off?
-
Yeah ZZ has a metal seal rather than a rubber one. I just don't understand how it had a ridiculous amount of play with the new bearings but none with the old ones.
-
What brakes work on a MAAS made SFA? My hombres rub and don't work right.
-
I'd recommend some Hombres.
-
Has anyone rebuilt Ruben pedals? There used to be kits sold by fly. Seems difficult to unseat the bearings (or races in my case).
-
Yeah ZZ has a metal seal rather than a rubber one. I just don't understand how it had a ridiculous amount of play with the new bearings but none with the old ones.
Did you make sure there aren't any shims pressed onto the older bearings? Are they dimensionally equal? Any play when the new bearings are out of the front hub?
-
No shims, new bearings seem fine out of the hub. Stupid play when in there though. Maybe just shitty bearings/fitting?
-

doing 180's, i turn out the opposite way i spin. am i retarded?
Youre doing it right.
-
Gooby pls....some kid called me an indian giver :-/
-
Just practice doing rollouts the other way on a bank or something.
Eventually it gets easier cause its more of a fluid motion to continue the rollout the way you spun.
-
since the BG mainpage is now The Union's mainpage i can't find the chart that lists rear end length for different gear ratios. i'm trying to figure out what a 10/29 would slam at though, so any help could be appreciated. i don't have a 29t sprocket yet, otherwise i'd measure that shit myself. i'm assuming i can just add a half link to my chain and have my axle stay in the same spot (slammed), but i wanted to be sure.

Wouldn't you also need to know the rear end length to calculate it? Assuming its a 13.75" rear end you should be right around 13.85" with out half link, and you should be slammed with a half link. These are just rough estimates but you get the idea.

i found my answer on gsport's site. (http://www.gsportbmx.com/2002/06/gearing/). thanks for the help gooby, this shit made little to no sense to me before tonight haha.
-
http://eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php
use this for all your gear needs... includes half links and all that jazz. also, set it to display as tabulated text for clarity.

Has anyone run a set of brakes on an Alienation Deviant rim.
I know the rims are terrible but it's what I have available to run with a front break setup. I don't want to crush the rim.

My profile crank arm sits kinda loose on the spindle. Left to right is tight, it just rocks back and forth in the circular direction a bit, like the splines on the spindle wore out. Is this the so-much-talked-about Profile Wobble? What's a generic fix?
-
Is this the so-much-talked-about Profile Wobble? What's a generic fix?
Yeap, that's exactly what it describes. I fixed my 41 Thermals using 271 Loctite. the 242 didn't seem too hold.
http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/10/15/t_lkr_red/overview/Loctite-Threadlocker-Red-271.htm
My V2 Fly cranks seemed like they were beyond Loctite I used JB Weld on the spindle crank interface. That was more of a permanent fix. Just holding me over until I get new cranks
-
Allright thanks. I was afraid this day would come. I see there is one 1mm ring inbetween the crankarm and the conical spacer so I'll try removing that first and see if it helps. The spindle is titanium so I wouldn't like messing around with that too much. Is it usually the splines on the crankarm or the splines on the spindle that wear out?

I need a metal guard for a wtp supreme front hub. What fits?

Steve-O bike check on Ride today: (http://bmx.transworld.net/1000163851/features/steve-o-croteaus-fiend-bike-check/?pid=58577#ngtop)
Why run so many tall headset spacers and then flip your stem? (http://bmx.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/444/files/steve-o-croteaus-fiend-embryo/IMG_5961.jpg)
-
Wasn't Steve-O a camera thief?
-
Hmm, possibly. It's pretty known that he has beaten on a female, not sure about stealing cameras.
-
I seem to remember hearing about him stealing a couple camcorders from other riders a few years back, then moving. Not sure on the accuracy of it or when it happened.
-
Trent, the guard for the eclat pulse front hub fits per WTP. I emailed them when I was trying to do the same thing. I ended up getting some guards from Ken(Zodiac) by the time I got the email from WTP.

what do you guys think is the new "take ivy 3"? In their time they stood as the best lookin frames. Is there any frame now that sets the level?

Anyone perhaps ever successfully fixed profile crankarm wobble with tinfoil?
-

TBH, i think you should just go with an Ivy 5. Especially in the new limited signal blue.

I don't really want to try a 16 stair rail and stick.

I don't really want to try a 16 stair rail and stick.
Are you using the sleeves, or just running the aluminum inner?
-
For those with Primo Strand V2s, The steerer tube is 175mm, which is too long for my liking. How much can you cut them down before cutting into the threads? is 160mm do-able? Cheers guys.

I've done an aluminum rail that long, without ever having a plastic bit attached to my bike. It was real slow but it happened.

I've seen a 8-flat-8 done one on them. It did have a quick layer of wax though.

On my strand v1's they had a section in the middle of the threads that had nothing on it so you could trim it to there if need be. They strands have a lot of thread.
-
^ That would be great! Well i'll find out soon enough, ordering them tommorow :)
-
Anyone perhaps ever successfully fixed profile crankarm wobble with tinfoil?
No, but I kind of did with a plastic grocery bag. Got all smashed into the splines and bolt threads and acted like loctite.

IF you can find Teflon plummer tape, I've used that in the past. It's not permanent fix but it helps

I was just going to suggest this and then I clicked next page and saw you beat me to it. I fixed hub wobble with it in a Hazard clone cassette. I had run it loose by accident which flared the bearing seat. The teflon tape made it stop wobbling for at least a year if not longer. I know the wheel was still going a year after I sold it too, don't know if it wobbles now though.
Should do the same thing on crank splines. And bolts that come loose - although don't use much there.
-
Profile hub problem.
I've replaced the original axle in my mini cassette for a brand new 3/8 female axle, put it all together as the instructions on the Profile website says.
But when I tighten it all up and put the wheel in my frame and tighten it up, the driver spins like a fixed gear. I'm confused and it's driving me insane. Help?
-
Is the washer between driver bearing and hub bearing big enough?
-
Hmm, that could be the problem. I'll take it apart and have another go at it.
-
Just realised, I'm missing the driver shims according to this.
http://profileeurope.co.uk/wp/?page_id=21
-
Profile that needs shimming. Wouldn't read about it
-
Also does anyone know the right length quick slic cable to suit a Sunday first wave with fly calipers with a dirt Harry leaver
-
Is there a suck thing as hydraulic disc brakes with hooded levers? Like on drop bars?
-
I've seen a 8-flat-8 done one on them. It did have a quick layer of wax though.
Word. Thanks dudes. I'll probably give it ago. Its mad steep that's why I asked first. Its already claimed a few people on skateboards and bikes.
-
It's seen quite often, but I wonder if it's safe to run a Challenger upside down?!
-
Probably the same as running any other top load stem upside down. Will be fine.
-
is integral made by primo? got this wheel stupid cheap.

Yeah I believe Integral is made by primo, kinda their complete brand
-
Does anyone know what size and thread pitch the integrated seatclamp bolt in fly frames are? I remember reading on here that the B6 brake lever bolts worked, but I can't find out what size those are. :(
-
Yeah it's the same as brake levers/lug bolts and most other seat clamps. M6.
-
Thanks man. I'll assume they're coarse? (M6 x 1)
-
I think they're fine thread but I'm not 100%
-
Hmmm. Alright, well thanks.
EDIT: Wikipedia tells me there is no fine standard for M6, but I don;t know how accurate that is...
-
M6x1.25 I think it is. I could be completely wrong though.
-
Check? Take frame to shop? Take bolt out of lever?
-
might be an M5 x .05?

Decent Street with the odd Park session tyres? No bigger than 2.25" on the front & no bigger than 2.10" on the back.. Narrowed it down toooooo.....
Animal GLH-R 2.25" Front - Animal TWW-R 2.0" Back
Fit FAF-K 2.3" Front (Doesnt inflate to 2.3" Supposedly) - Fit FAF-K 2.10" Rear
Demolition Momentum 2.20" Front - Demolition Momentum 2.0" Rear
Any other recomendations would be appreciated too :)
-
Those are all good.
Lots of people around here, myself included, have been running the Eclat CTRLs and everyone seems to like them.
-
2.25" FAF in the front, 2.10 GLH (Regular version, folding sucks).
-
I like the look of the Eclat tyres, not sure why i didnt think of them as im gunna be getting Eclat wheels whenever the bloody Blind hub is out!
-
Momentums are fucking awesome. Really grippy on both street and park.
-
I love my momentums. I used to run an eclat CMD (the knobby one) 2.1 front and CTRL (mid-tread one) 2.1 rear and those were great. Lasted me well over a year, but IMO the momentums are a little grippier on smooth concrete/asphalt.
-
Gonna be getting those ctrl tires as soon as I can.
-
I'm sure this is the wrong place to put this but can someone direct me to those posts made by the dude at Alienation? I've been looking and looking but I can't find them. Would they even still exist?

i'm getting an alliance psi frame in 20.75 for free, worth riding or re-sell it? its from 2005 or 06 (euro bb)

Ride it!! Or sell it to me cheap;)

Haha! I'm pretending it wasn't my birthday. I'm still 19, for the 5th time.
Anyone know if the odyssey levers are painted or anodised? I wanna raw it.
-
Depends on the lever. If it is a color, it is probably painted. But the blacks are anno.
-
It's black. Looks like it's going for a dunking :)
-
would aluminum be a suitable material for brake mount bolts?
-
Should be fine. All the bolts do is hold the springs in place and make sure the arms don't fall off.
If they fail, its not critical.
-
Fit Hawk frame? good? bad? broken ones?
-
Lots of broken V1's
-
Fit Hawk frame? good? bad? broken ones?
feels nice, dents really easy, big tubes, doesn't feel very sturdy though. doesn't clear big tires but fits quite large sprockets. my old one broke.
-
that sucks. my superstar is cracked and im a little bad on cash right now. I can get that Fit really cheap, like 70 euros, its tempting.
-
Anyone else had a frame with an integrated headset that required tapping the bearings (a couple taps with a rubber mallet) into the head tube? Every other frame I've owned I was able to push the bearings in by grabbing on the opposite end of the head tube and using my thumbs to get the bearing to seat.
-
^I've had that before. There's probably paint or something in there. Wouldn't worry about it.
My bike has succumbed to the British Winter, has anyone tried this shit:

or should I just paint it red? I don't mind a bit of humidity brown cool rust but this is orange shit rain rust and we can't be having that.

I'm guessing it's phosphoric acid based. That stuff has to soak in to work and requires multiple coats. It'd be hard to use on a BMX frame cause it'd just drip off. It says non-drip so it might work, but I have a feeling it still will. If it actually stays on the tube let me know because I'd be interested in picking up some. I used similar stuff on the floor of my car and had to let it soak for hours, wire wheel it, and repeat a couple times.
If you soak it in clean motor oil and let it bake in the sun (or a warm lamp since you're in England) a little it'll turn the rust brown and slow it down. That's what I did to my S&M and I love how it turned out. Or use a brass wire wheel to polish the bare steel, then oil it.

What do you guys use to lube your chain and how well does it work?
I've been using the White Lightning waxy type stuff but it doesn't last very long until my chain starts squeaking again.
-
Tf2 oil.
-
I use 3-in-1 electric motor oil. (the blue one)
It works nice, and it gets kind of sticky after a while and turns into a gum sort of substance that coats the teeth on my sprocket and driver. I believe this is because it's vegetable based, but I'm not sure. I probably re-apply it every few months, or whenever I ride in the rain.

Teflon is best for chains and brake cables.
I've been using this on freecoasters for a few years, works great:

Still have the same tube I bought over 3 years ago. I've also been using it on cranks, headset bearings, bearing seats, hub bearings, etc.

Cheers.

Might as well ask this here too, what paint strippers have worked best for you guys?
-
don´t know how it is at you in the us, but in germany you can only buy strippers that you probably might be drink as a private person.
if you want to have a good and aggressive stripper that also strips original paint you have to go to a painter among your acquaintances that sells it to you illegal...

If that's out, try this thing called heirloom. It's also at CT n it's like 11.49 for a litre container. It's good for like 2/3 complete raw jobs.

Smells like a 27.2, slight hint of 30.1 though so I'm not sure.

Some old cheapy thing. Is red though which is all that matters. Attached a pic from the listing.

probably 26 or 27.something
Take it to a bikeshop, bikeshop employees usually don't smoke so their sense of smell is better

take your bike to the bike shop and have them show you what size seat post you need?

will the profile 3/8th volcano front hub axle nuts (http://www.profileracing.com/estore/product.php?productId=353) work on an Odyssey Vandero 2 front hub?
No. Profile uses 16tpi for whatever reason, whereas Odyssey and everyone else use 24tpi.
-
lame. does anybody know where I can get green 24tpi front hub bolts?
-
Do the tree bolts come in green? if not I don't think there are, unfortunately.
-
nope no green, god dammit
-
You might be able to use the profile volcano washers if you can find some green ones, and use 3/8" x 24tpi studs instead of the profile ones. I'm not completely sure they'll fit, but it might be worth a try if you get desperate, haha.

Put my BMX seat post in and it was a bit too small so I bought a 25.8mm post, that was too big so I just forced it in there. All is well now.

Might be a bitch to get back out

I'll worry about that later.

Anyone ever rawed/polished a rim? I want to do at least my back one, is it hard? I assume it'll be the same as anything, I'll just need a bigger tub? I have Fly rims too so it should be double fun.
-
I was considering trying this but I decided I wasn't up for rebuilding my wheels. Let us know how it goes though, I might try it eventually too. I would assume just the usual oven cleaner or whatever it is that you prefer to use...
-
Is it painted or anodized? I'm about to raw some painted rims but thats just going to be a case of Nitro Mors.
Related question: What should I use to protect the metal, if anything?

Nitromors shouldn't do anything to aluminum really, I'd say just clean the rims off real good when you're done to make sure there's no residue or anything.

hardware store and a green sharpie

I'm more worried about oxidation. Pretty sure aluminium oxidises still?
-
Well yeah but not in the same way as steel. It'll take a good while to start showing signs of oxidization in the first place, but then once the entire surface is oxidized to a certain depth (extremely small number, I'm not sure what it is) it will stop and won't go any deeper. I don't think something like Nitromors would speed that process up but I guess it could happen...
I don't know enough to give you a definite answer, but I would be tempted to say you'll be fine.
-

Have been thinking of doing this for a while now, as well.
Best idea I've come up with was the use a garbage can lid as the "tub".
Interested to see what other people say. Mines anodized.
-
Mine is anodised too. It has a bit of paint on so I'll see if I can get rid of that and raw it next week some time. Will post pics and hopefully not end up with caustic soda filled rivers in the drilled bits.
-
Does anyone know the width of the Elementary stem? The front bit where the bars slide in?
-
You're not allowed one.
-
I've rawed rims in the past. Just treat the same as other Ali parts, did have wire wheel them abit
-
Did you use brakes on the rawed rim?
-
Not a 100% sure. I think I did

Where can one buy replacement parts for the animal javelin cassette hub? Don't need a new driver but I would love to know when the time comes.
-
I'd email Animal, they look like they would use odysey style drivers though
-
The axles seem to be readily available but not much else. Judging by the fact that it uses 1 spring I'd say it's probably an Oddy/Joytech driver.
-
Does anyone know the width of the Elementary stem? The front bit where the bars slide in?
according to my ghetto measuring tape, my V3 is around 49-50mm width at the bar clamping area of the "frame". note that the full width of the "frame" is about 50-51mm. there is a slight taper towards the handlebar clamping area.
the wedge that butts up against the bars are slightly shorter (or "narrower"), at around 47-48mm.
my assumption is that you're measuring because of custom narrow flatland style bars - with very careful filing you may be able to get up to an extra 1mm clearance on each side, although this will still likely affect the stem significantly
-
The frame is already pretty minimal
-
Where can one buy replacement parts for the animal javelin cassette hub? Don't need a new driver but I would love to know when the time comes.
They are made by Chosen so they are compatible with at least Proper and Colony, maybe the Cinema VX or even the Tree cassette (different axle though). Loads of clones about, you can identify them by the driver's shape and rubber seal.

Nevermind.

I have a buddy who's been riding a set for a few years now with no problems, but if you shred hard enough to bend oddy forks I'd say you should replace them with the new oddy forks.

Does anyone know if the internals on the new Federal V3 coaster are compatible with the solid 14mm axle that came with the ACB style KHE Reverse? Are there any modifications necessary to make it fit?
My hub shit the bed on friday, and I'm not too keen on those studded tranny axles everyone is doing on their coasters now.
-

Does that mean you could gut a Javelin cassette & gut a Tree cassette & switch the internals? 17mm Female axle in the Javelin hub?
-
Does that mean you could gut a Javelin cassette & gut a Tree cassette & switch the internals? 17mm Female axle in the Javelin hub?
Not directly. The tree hub shell uses bigger 6903 (17x30x7)bearings while the Javelin uses 6902 (15x28x7).
You can use 17287 (17x28x7) bearings in the Javelin but from memory the bearing seats are wider on the Tree axle.
Incidentally I machined a 17mm axle for my Madera hub and got some bushings for the driver so I could run a true 14mm female axle in it.

Reduced pasta was shit, sent them an e-mail:
To whomever it may concern,
It is with great regret that I write to you today. Normally Co-op is a sure bet on packaged foods, alas today I was disappointed. You see I stayed at a friends house last night and between us we enjoyed a few alcoholic beverages, as you would expect. Now, come this morning he is still in bed. Not being one to rifle through his cupboards I took myself over to the Co-op over the road (ideal placement) and bought myself a breakfast triple sandwich, some crisps and the aforementioned "honey & mustard chicken pasta". Now, the pasta was reduced which really was the only reason I bought it in all honesty but still I was not best pleased with what I consumed. With a title as such I was expecting at least some honey and chicken flavour. Unfortunately no, all I was met with was mustard. Mustard every single bite of the pasta thing. Not great first thing on a Saturday. This e-mail is here to suggest that you re-evaluate the amount of mustard you put in these things for any lesser man than myself may struggle to finish one, should they make the purchase. Since I am Billy ten men I obviously finished every last bite, other than the bits I dropped on the floor. My friend's dog took care of those, though he looked equally as unimpressed as I was. I sincerely hope that you will consider this e-mail urgent and address the issue of your too mustardy pasta for I feel if it was made a better product then it would not have to be reduced in the first place. More money for you, more tasty for me. Greater good for everyone,
Thank you for reading,

I'm not even going to bother using the search function to find out if this is already answered.
Anyone know if the Federal v.3 coaster has a shemale axle or if it's a flush-cut 14mm with 3/8's bolts?
-
99.9% sure it has 14mm axle that extends into the drop out & is threaded for 3/8ths Bolts so if you wanted to run pegs you'd need 3/8ths/10mm ones.

Chrome Slam Bars, they're a bitch to cut down.

make sure you're using saw blades meant for metal (i.e. fine tooth)

How would I be able to tell if my Tree sprocket is US made? It's a lite Bolt drive I got a little over 2 years ago.

If it is 2 years old, I would assume it is US made.

Will Profiles GDH spindle fit the 19mm Fit indent cranks?
-
It should, because all the 48 spline spindles are the same I guess. But I'm not 100% sure.
-
How many people are running 27/9 gearing? Im abit fed up of "standard" gearing, even though i plan to run a freecoaster i want harder gearing. I want to go fast at things & backwards without back pedalling lol. I know some of the Trails guys are running ALOT harder gearing than what i plan on, so is it noticeable? Cheers guys!
-
^ for the brief little bit that I ran a 9T driver I ran 28T in the front. I'm running 30-10 and 31-10 on my bikes now. Once your rolling it's unnoticeable other than the less spinning out. It's great for longer distance street riding. downside getting started in close up spots. I wouldn't go back too standard gearing now. i don't have any experience with harder gearing on a coaster.
-
I much prefer 3:1 gearing now I tried it, feels better than 'normal' gearing.
-
I rode 27-9 for a while on my beacon and it felt fine. I liked it, I usually run a 28-9. It's nice for getting going a bit faster without it being crazy like 30-9. My buddy riding the Ezra coaster rides a 28-9 as well
-
Quality, Im dead certain i want to run the 27/9. I know there's trade offs but the extra speed is gunna be great!
-
33-9 feels awesome!
-
another vote for 3.0 gear ratio.

too late now probs but you can use use a metal file/rasp or a grinder to remove some of the chrome before you try and cut it
-
Has anyone had problems fitting pedals to Profile crank arms?
I bought new pedals and cranks, but when I try and screw the pedal into the arm it wont catch.
It's definitely a crank problem as the pedals screw straight into the other two sets of cranks I have. And yes, It is the right pedal.
-
I've been running 30-10 for a while and love it. With a coaster on one bike and a cassette on the other. More speed, normal gearing just feels too easy to me now. Doesn't bother me with short runups either.
-
I'll be running a 13" CS its super poppy, so im pretty sure the gearing wont really effect the short run up stuff. Just give me a little extra speed cruising spot hunting & racing my friends lol.
-
CS length doesn't affect acceleration, choice of gearing will though
-
I know the CS length wont effect acceleration, What what i meant was with the short CS it will be easier to get the pop in a shorter run up (to say a rail) even with the harder gearing.

Is the US version of The Albion #11 out yet?

How would I be able to tell if my Tree sprocket is US made? It's a lite Bolt drive I got a little over 2 years ago.
I'm pretty sure the US made Tree Lite sprockets had the name engraved in it as opposed to the laser etching on the current ones.
-

what was said above is true, but you can also email me a picture to info@treebicycleco.com and i can see if sam will have more insight into where/when it was made. we used quite a few usa manufacturers before taiwan did them.

Are JCPC pedal bodies really side specific? I need new bodies for my grinding side both left and right. Do I really have to spend 2x£9.99 or can I just buy one body, use one side on the right and one on the left?
is it a case of it not fitting or will it just look/feel a bit different? Given it's the side i grind on i don't really care if it feels odd or anything because my feet won't be touching it
This is probably very poorly worded.
-
Are JCPC pedal bodies really side specific?
they are left/right specific and wont fit into each other.
the original body replacement packaging comes with a side for each, many bikeshops that stocks them split the sides themselves and charge you for one side i think (effectively doubling the price).
the way Empire sells them is USD 7 per order:
http://www.empirebmx.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9669
you get two 'halves' of the same side
i'd imagine it being the same in england, spend 20 quid now, you'll get a total of four halves.
-

This is bullshit. It's like when shops sell the bar ends separately from the grips that they are supposed to come with.

why are fly ruben grips sometimes sold as singles?

A good material for a seat cover? My denim cloth is worn out and I was thinking something more durable or just go with denim again?

If you can get your hands on some good quality leather it'll last a good long while. It can be hard to actually cover though, depending on the type/thickness.

does the shadow ravenger stem use regular or smallhead bolts?

That's what I've always thought, although I've also been told "ee-klat" is the proper way to say it, so I really don't know.
The actual French word is certainly pronounced as you said, ay-clah.

I've always said "ee-klat". I've never been corrected so I assume thats how its pronounced or else people are just too nice to correct me haha

I've always said "ee-klat".
This. You defo sound less of an idiot saying it how it's written than trying to pronounce some French word.

anyone else feel that 225 glh-r's feel really shitty and slow? it's like i'm driving a truck not a bmx. i really doubt it's a headset issue

I was running a 2.10" GLH-R up front for god knows how long never had any issues? Ive got E-Comet 2.25" F&R now & those things roll smooooth!
-
i have run a 2.10 glh on the back and a 225 glh on the front with no issues too. maybe it's a glh-r thing? or something else

They seem to run slower than other tires, that's true. I run the same setup, but normal GLHs.
-
Eclat (http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=eclat&submit=Submit)

I run 2.25 Glh's back and front, they don't seem any more sluggish than the Duo Stunners, actually they feel faster than the Duo's.
-
GLH and GLH-R have different duro's IIRC
-
GLH and GLH-R have different duro's IIRC
Pretty sure this is true. I've had pairs of both GLHs and GLH-Rs in 2.1 and the GLH-Rs wore out much faster. I didn't notice a huge difference in speed though...

Those brown seats sold like crazy! We'll be getting more in stock within a months time when our spring shipment shows up. We're also currently working on getting a new UK distributor set up, but I don't have any real details aside from that. Good luck finding one. If you don't just send us an email and we'll track one down for you.

Cheers guys :) I've ordered from Fluid, hopefully they actually have em in stock!

There is a gum color and there is also a brown color. The brown is like doo doo brown. Not really gum. Could be what you are looking for.
Sam loves that natural shit. So I am willing to bet his seats are as close to doo doo brown as you can get.

Found out that the reason my Ody v3 driver is skipping is because one of the pawls gets stuck when it's pushed down. Do I need a new C-clip, pawl or both?

Take a flathead screwdriver and open up the end of the pawl a little with it. I recall having to do this a few times with mine.

ill try that, thanks!

I need some thoughts on what color brake pad to run with black rims. I have been using the red Odyssey slim by fours with a chrome rim for years and I loved the ability to feather and stop abruptly. I recently put a black rim on with some clear slim by fours and after one session I am not feeling them. It seems like they have zero stopping power until they lock up completely.
Anyone running the red/salmon pads with black rims? Is your braking Ok?
-
i think the salmon is a softer compound than the clears, in which case they should solve your issue.
-
I think that's wrong. The clear pads seem too soft, whereas the red/salmon are supposed to be a medium density. I am just curious if the red/salmon will work on colored rims.
-
Yes they'll work
-
Shut up.

Cheap 36h front hub. Where can I get one?

Is there anyone who makes a u-brake lever with reach adjust? I'm too used to mtbs and hate how far away bmx levers are. I'm far too used to having one finger covering the brake at all times.
-
A lot of Tektro levers have the little screw for it. Paul levers do too if you feel like spending £40. Everything is loads easier if you don't cover the lever though, advice coming from someone who does hold the lever 90% of the time.

-
Anyone know a release date for the new G-Sport Simian hub??
No.
:(
G.
-
I'm really interested in the hub, too, seems like my BSD hub won't take that much of abuse anymore...
-
Well that sucks! Really want to give the Simian a go instead of a Marmy. I guess ill try & get everything else first then & hopefully by the time i have the Simian will be out, or at least on its way!
Edit: I dont really know why i thought of this... But Dave from the Merged said we'd be stoked on the hub guard. I was thinking there might be a plastic guard that slots over the little lip bit kinda like a gland. Then a little metal guard that replaces the collar & holds the plastic gland type guard on.
-
To clarify: the front is going well and hopefully will be out relatively soon.
The rear is taking a little longer and probably wont be out until the late summer at the earliest.
:)

A rear Simian?! Ok i am DEFINITELY waiting for my G-Sport Wheelset now!

What's this Simian you speak of?

Either of you find grips that are a close match in color? I'm looking for some also and all I can find is Gum color.

^ Chase Hawks come in brown (I think i might have said this before :/) a few of the newer Odsy grips are coming in brown like the Dugans.
-
Respraying cranks, will I get away with just sanding the paint down a bit til its thin and rough then go over with black then lacquer, or do I need to get em raw, primer then the colour and clearcoat?
I'm still yet to get any matching grips, the odyssey ones I have now are too comfy to change just yet.
-
I wouldn't bother rawing it, normally resprayed cranks end up with the paint rubbed off on the outside
-

Thanks I didn't see any on Empire, I'll just run my black Griswalds until I find some.

How many hubshell bearings does the Primo mix have?
I've heard anywhere from 2 to 4. I can't find a straight answer and vitalbmx is illiterate.
-
There should be just 2. Some of Primo's older front hubs had 4 bearings, maybe that's what's confusing them?
-
I could have sworn the mix had 2 on the non-drive side and 1 on the drive side. Then again, the Cult match hub is identical and dans says it has 2 hubshell bearings. The Primo Remix has 4 tiny bearings. Vitalbmx is spewing all sorts of shit that can't be trusted. If someone could confirm its 2, that would be great. I really dont want to take my hub apart right now.

When cooking pasta is it better to put it into cold water and bring to the boil or put the pasta directly into a pot of boiling water?
-
Lol, I always bring the water to a rolling boil before adding in the pasta.
-
Definitely boil the water first. Use plenty of water, pinch of salt. No lid. Stir extra at the beginning not to have any pieces stuck to the bottom / sides of the pan, then stir like every minute or so. Check package for cooking time. If it says 9 to 11 minutes. Start trying and taking bites from 7 minutes on. When it is just only slightly too al dente for your taste, turn off the fire and pour the remaining water out. By the time this has happened it should be almost perfect. Oh, and don't add oil to "prevent sticking", stupidest gimmick ever.
Always throw the pasta in the pan with the ragù (sauce). Stir for a bit on low fire. Now the pasta will reach perfect "dente-ness". Never throw the ragù on top of the pasta. Buon appetito!

what is the best way to properly tighten caliper style brakes? (the ones that have one longer bolt that goes through the frame)
i just bought a ss/fg bike and it is giving me hell to get the calipers centered so one pad doesn't always rub, and i cannot for the life of me get the pads straight and tight with the braking surface of the rim.
-
Pull brake lever, tiighten bolt. Release, and brake should be centred.

It depends on the brake. In the "bad old days" some calipers had a habit of creeping round when you tightened them and it was nearly impossible to keep them straight. Weinman brakes used to need a special little socket ended wrench thing (which I still have) to hold the bolt while you tightened the back. Some modern ones have a hex key socket ont he front to hold them still and some need a thing like a cone wrench to hold the spring holder... post a picture of the brake if you still cant get it..
:)
G.
-
i think i got it, the caliper has a bolt that has cone wrench flat on it and i tightened it, it is rubbing a little now but that is due to the slightly wobbly wheel.
-
caliper
rubbing
wobbly wheel
*shudders
joking aside, is it working OK? anything to get a bike rolling is good, however it doesn't hurt to look at how to improve it. see if you can borrow a spoke wrench and straighten your wheel a bit.

Is there any sprocket with guard and 33t this days? Which one is the best shot?

Pfft, your pasta sucks. Boil the kettle, pour it over the pasta, go sit down, forget it, remember, have soggy pasta.
-
fuck caliper brakes. holy fuck I hate those things. You can bend springs if you need more tension, fuck w/ the bolt to try to center them, etc.
Sauce goes ON TOP of the pasta. Maybe even off to the side a bit. I think the 'oil on pasta' deal is for resturants where they may cook a bunch of pasta before hand? then they dip it in hot water to heat it up if someone wants some pasta? I don't know why you would do that at home though. Pasta goes from boiling water, drained, plate, to belly.
-

any restaurants that do this to their pasta is no more than a fast food joint.
having said that tho, soggy cold leftover pasta was half of my diet in my early twenties and i loved every bit of it.

Wrong.

Do Phil Wood make a track rear hub with a fixed cog on one side and a freewheel on the other? I can't see anything on their site.
When putting barend brakelevers on bullhorn bars does the cable go inside the bar and would I need to drill a hole for it to go to the callipers?
-
^Pretty sure it depends on the lever. Some levers the cable will come out along the underside of the bar and goes under the tape, some (I guess higher end levers) will run the cable through the bars. If yours goes through the bars, you will of course need a hole for the cable to exit.
-
Almost definitely no. If you need a hole, it will alread have a hole.

phil wood definitely makes flip/flop fixed/free hubs. and fyi you can thre

Sure you can. You can either cut, drill and tap it out yourself, Have some one else do it for you, or buy one of the aftermarket axles from companies using KHE style internals.

What will stop my eclat tibia cranks wobbling?
-
What will stop my eclat tibia cranks wobbling?
T/Wom/thunderbolts.
Sorry, I had to. Locktite or plumbers tape often work as a band aid fix, but if it's actually worn splines causing the problem there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. Is it the drive or non drive side? Edit: nevermind, tibias are actually welded 2 piece aren't they?
-
Is there a hubguard for a v2 hazard hub that wont spread frame kinda like the knight guard for the primo.
-
BSD for the odyssey
-
Non-drive: BSD for Odyssey
Drive-side: Tree
-
What will stop my eclat tibia cranks wobbling?
new axle. the fly axle is compatible
-
Sorted em now it was just me being lazy, was running them loose coz of not having a bb cone spacer haha
-
Is there actually a drive side guard (ideally steel, aluminium will suffice - fuck that plastic shit) for a 10t g-sport ratchet or do I really have to fork out 60 notes for a 9t driver and deal with the change in GI just so i can prevent snapping my chain?
i've got a primo one in the post but i've now been told the bastard doesn't work with a 10t driver which sucks and i know the bsd one is tight on a 9 so no chance on a 10.
-
The Tree one LOOKS pretty big but i don't have any personal experience with it. You'd have to bore out the center too but it might work...
-
Depends what chain you run with the primo I've heard it clears a ten. But I couldn't clear a nine with my collapse chain
-
Running an odyssey bluebird so it's not a hench chain. guard should arrive today/tomorrow hopefully so i'll have to wait and see.
-
so apparently a gust of wind broke my v1 khe reverse driver bearing last night while i was sitting on the couch. i heard a few loud PINNNG sounds a couple hours after putting the wheel on. the wheel has about 2 hours riding time total, and i was mindful enough to buy a spare driver when i bought the hub since i was aware of the problems people were having with it. i locate the spare driver after a lengthy search, and assemble it only to realize the clutch only threads onto it about 1/8" before jamming. the old driver threads into the clutch with ease, and i can't determine why. any help?
-
Just got a ratchet hub and put on a bds guard. The guard is the ratchet specific one and yet the plastic sleeve rubs my spokes. Just wondering if its happened to anyone else
-
Happened to mine when it was laced 4 cross, I just filed a bit of the plastic guard away.
-
Re my driveside hubguard woes. plastic DSG does rub with 10t ratchet/bluebird chain but it works. can hear the chain rubbing but it's nothing too bad, and the plastic is wearing away sharpish so i would imagine the rumble will stop soon. as for the strength of plastic guard, so far so good. being on my favoured grind side it takes less hits than my oppy side but it's taken a few sketchy peggers and it hasn't melted in yet. time will tell.
-
Coming back to ride after years... My bike is actually good and i did some ugprades already (odyssey plastic pedals, Odyssey R32...) but my bars are too low for these days (Animal Piff). What big bar should i take now? I only ride street and sometimes park.
Colony Bull Bars are a great choice?
Thanks
-
Anything with nice geo really. I'm a fan of the bonedeth bars, but have ordered a set of fit bennyls
-
If I go from a 20.6"tt/75*ht to a 20.8"tt/74*ht will my bars stay in roughly the same position?
-
They will move 0.2in forward... I assume you're wondering about different HT angles?
-
If you are riding Piffs and want to go bigger I wouldn't make a huge leap. Going from Piffs to Perfect 10's might be a bit of a shock
I'd go for something 8", 26.5"-friendly and => 3° upsweep and see how that goes for a fair while
-
They will move 0.2in forward... I assume you're wondering about different HT angles?
The way I see it is that the longer top tube will obviously move the bars forward while the mellow head tube angle will move them slightly backwards putting them close to their original position. It makes sense in my head but I don't know if it'll work out in real life.
-
Your logic sounds right, but the first post says 75 degrees for both haha.
-
Your logic sounds right, but the first post says 75 degrees for both haha.
You're right, I fixed it.
-
Well handlebar rise will affect the difference too, but with 9" of rise (including dust cap, stem rise, etc) frame B (20.8/74) will only move your hand position forward 1mm or so over frame A (20.6/75). With more rise the difference becomes even smaller.
There are other variables in there too - standover and BB height will change things but only by a tiny amount, it's probably not worth even considering...
-
How bad an idea is white bar tape on a road bike that gets used on sometimes muddy back roads every day in the uk which means rain most of the time?
-
Most white bar tape never stays white for long. However, I got some Fizik stuff that is white after a few rides.
-
Working in a bike shop for the past few months has made me hate white things even more than I already did. Bartape and seats are top of the worst bits to buy list. If you must have white then get a plasticy one rather than a cork one, wipes clean easier.
-
Black it is then. I may even be a tramp and try to re use my old bar tape as I'm only fitting a new lever, the tape doesn't seem too worn or anything.
-
It's pretty normal to do that haha. Unwrap it enough to fit the lever then redo it, saves you £15.
-
So i had to change my bottom bracket. Bought a Fly and installed it on my bike with my Primo Powerbites. But it feels tight to spin, is it normal? Already checked the spacer and its ok. Greased everything, remounted...
-
Tight to spin with the chain off too?
-
Yes, with the chain off and without bolts on crank arm
-
Those bloody Spanish.
-
*non post-weld machined comment*
-
Yeah...
I will try to ride anyway, hope it dont break :P
-
I am going to be painting my frame soon. Currently my frame is raw and has surface rust, no clear coat. Just wondering the best way to remove this and prep it for paint. I was thinking I'd use steel wool and WD40, but I feel that may effect the way the paint adheres to the frame.
-
WD40 should be fine, but I'd wash the frame off with paint thinner when you're done. Let that dry, then paint it.
-
Id leave the WD-40 out of it. get some sandpaper or used a rustpaint based primer. Adding wd is just not worth the chance of orange peel by missing some in prep and have it affecting the paint.
-

Yeah I was thinking a fine sandpaper.
-
thought you were thinking of wd40 and steel wool?
-
Best way to remove bottom bracket bearings? I want to be 100% sure I don't damage the frame. The bearings don't matter.
-
Ratchet extender thing through the bb and give em a clobbering
-
I've got an animal jumpoff remix with a stuck, broken pinch bolt. The (hollow) bolt snapped in half after the friend I got it from over tightened the rear of the stem. both pinch bolts broke, but one before the other. To make up for the missing bolt, which he was able to remove, he overtightened the lower one, and, yeah. Anyway, i removed the back/unheaded half with a pair of pliers. However, I've tried removing the head of the bolt with an allen wrench, and the bolt spins, but doesn't move. How can I get it out?
-
Is changing a crankset from unsealed to sealed just a matter of swapping bearings?
-

Sorry cant really follow your description. If you have the threaded half out, cant you just put a 5mm allen key or something similar in from the under side and knock the head end out?
:)

-

Not usually. The unsealed will have threaded hardware on the axle so you will need a different axle too and probably some spacers. Usually makes more sense to just buy better cranks with a sealed BB...

They should be lightly oiled in the factory with a heavy weight oil. Essentially the protective oil that the bearings come in. This should be better than grease for steel on aluminium because there is no water in the oil that could facilitate electro galvanic corrosion... I somewhat assumed that the OP related to frame bearings; BB and headset...
:)

I thought it was a couch thing, not that bpn guy... Figures. I've always greased them anyway, at least now I don't have to feel guilty about it ::)

grease means they come out easier if you need to remove them at somepoint in the future

Why are there all of these "wish list" threads all of the sudden???? I would like an answer to this.

Quick question: What bars are these?
http://blog.defgrip.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Defgrip_Self_Cruising02.jpg
My best guess is the t1 salt lake bars, but I wasn't quite sure.
Thanks in advance!

Look like Bone Deth Deadman bars.
-
Stanton Meth Bars. (Or Bonedeth, hard to tell for sure at that angle)

So I have the opportunity to buy a Model C Ex (the white one) for £125 next weekend, should I do it? Bearing in mind I recently sold my 20" trail scout as I couldn't get used to the sketchy feel coming from 26"?
Edit - never mind, car brake pads now need replacing and thus taking up precious money. Cunt.

Find the money, that is a deal and you will love it... doing the pads yourself is easy so if you were going to give it to a garage to do you can save some cash there.

FUCK BRAKE PADS! Buy the Model C NOW. That's a killer deal and you'll love it. From a fellow MTB guy, you absolutely have to get that bike.

Is there a resource online for finding which sprocket/driver/chain combinations work for slamming certain chainstay lengths?

Anyone have a st martin footjam frame? If so will 2.1 tires fit ok?

Current best brake pads for a black rim? I asked before and was told clear ones but I had some Odyssey clear ones before and they weren't amazing.
Also whats the best straddle, is it worth making one with a spoke etc? The one I have now is a bit shit, hard to get it all tight and nice feeling. I would like a quic slic but my brake won't fit it as it bolts one side rather than having a bit to sit a ball end in.
-
I've had good luck so far with ghost pads, but some people don't like them... Salmon Kool stops come next probably
-
Salmon Kool Stops without a doubt.

Get a QS and a Springfield and you will get new pads with it... will probably cost you about the same as fancy pads and a fancy straddle and you will have the benefit of a new cable...
:)

It might depend on the finish of the rim. I have a hard anodized Hazard light and I tried clear pads as well as several red/salmon pads before ultimately finding that black slim by fours were the best choice.

haha I did both, put the car stuff on my credit card to worry about paying off in the future. I'll go for the springfield then I guess! Killseth I think they're pretty cheap Alex rims so painted rather than anodised I guess.

Definitely feels better than a 20" for me. I think I can hop higher and it carries speed better. I still prefer my 26" for trails though and I'm yet to try this at a skatepark but I reckon I'll like it.

I think you may be riding MTB jumps on it too... on BMX dirt jumps, a 24" BMX is night and day better than a 26" DJ bike IMO.
-
Yeah I think the guys that build at western park are mostly mtb'ers so makes sense I guess. Hopefully gonna get to the skatepark on it tomorrow!

Anyone ever rebuilt a Nankai technolight with a Profile shell? I got one today and it needs a bit of a service. Is it difficult?
-
its pretty straight forward as long as your familiar with rebuilding hubs, just make sure to keep track of all the ball bearings
-
Sweet. I think ill be alright ive got one of those magnetic dishes ill use. What grease is best?
-
I've been using phil wood or park tools grease on all my bike stuff for ages now. i don't really know what the "right" grease to use it but id imagine practically anything would work, my old LBS swore by white lithium automotive grease
-
Cool ive got phil wood stuff here

looking at upgrading the wheels on my current steed, but i cannot decide if i should buy a complete set of wheels or have a set custom built. and if i go the custom route what would be the most ideal rims and hubs to put in the build?
currently the bike is running on some Alex Supra2's, stock 48h haro hubs with sealed 14mm axles.
they are bombproof, but at the same time combined they weigh almost as much as my second bike.
Thanks ahead of time,
Boneskid1
This is the bike, http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/haro/37204 I am not on my pc right now so I cannot link my pics.

unless your real picky about your setup id just buy pre built wheels. not much difference in cost and its less hassle.
also check the classifieds on here, I've seen some good deals on single wheels lately

For sure. These are a good deal.
Unless you know the wheel builder and trust them, just get pre-built wheels.
-
I was going to have them built through Dan's. That g-sport set is looking good. Might consider them
-
Dans wheel building sucks, but that's just what I heard. Stick to empire or Albes!
-
I can vouch or empires wheel building. Quality build

yeah i got my geisha built thru empire yearrrrrssss ago (5-6 maybe?) and just last week it finally gave up the ghost on an over rotated 3

will these fit the ratchet 3/8ths axle and the marmoset?

You need a 3/8s 24tpi bolt. None of those will fit. M6 refers to a metric 6mm bolt.
-
most hardware stores have 3/8ths 24tpi bolts

Anyone hook up odyssey Springfield brakes for frontbrake use? I saw the new fairdale bikes have them but didn't really get to check it out. So over having to adjust shit.

Adjusting shit is awesome. The Springfield brakes don't feel great.

^^^ Are you kidding?
Maybe you have a problem with your bosses or cable, they should feel awesome (unless you have a weird preference)

I have done it. Takes a bit of fiddling but not a huge amount. Cut slot deeper for cable to fit through smoothly.

Think theres a pretty high risk of getting stung with customs charges nowadays.
-

Empire are rock fucking solid, you need have no worries at all on that.
Whether you get stung for customs is down to luck and value. If you are ordering several hundred quids worth then it may well get charged and wont be within your "allowance". Smaller cheaper items are both less likely to get charged and more likely to slip through.
Obviously UK distributors and shops are loosing out on business though and distributors are unlikely to support warranty, so factor that in to the price as well as possible duties.
If you have a relative or friend in the US (even if they are just visiting for a few weeks) then get it shipped to them and they can ship it on to you as a "gift" (or bring it back on the plane)...
In the old days, UK BMXers would put together a load of orders and then someone would go out and ride for a few weeks (often not taking a bike but building one there and bringing it back) and essentially get a free holiday. There is obviously the need to go through the "nothing to declare" lane when you get back, but if the bike is already built and looks used then you are likely to be fine..
:)

I think they're awesome for people who have no idea what they're doing. I like my spring tension wayyyy lower though. I know you can stretch/change the spring but that's way more hassle than just not turning something too much.

Most "Bicycle Grease" is just rebranded automotive/marine grease at a higher price point for a smaller package.

I like low spring tension too. It took me approx 0.4seconds to pull the arms apart enough to stretch out the spring a little and get it how I like... definitely less time consuming than trying to balance the arms.

Do you really need the slack pin on a Federal freecoaster? I'm thinking of just ditching it and cutting the axle down

You dont need it im at full slack as it worked its way out, if you dont want it send it me haha.

Hey guys... I want to find a barrel adjuster/cable lug for a front shell brake. Something similar to the one that comes with evo 2's. Can anyone point me in the right direction.I think I need it also since I have the fly CNC lever

Anyone know what the cheapest replacement cassette driver I could get for my Model C is? Was gonna buy tee's 33t tree sprocket but I think it'll make my gearing stupidly hard to ride with the current driver considering it's 27t sprocket at the minute. Or, how would a Model C with 33t up front be? I want to make it a bit harder and faster but a 6t jump might be a bit much.
-
Why not just try a 30t? Cheap ones can be found all over.
-
Yeah I'm thinking a 30t would be right. Raw tree sprockets look nice though haha

Are you sure it is 27/10 now? They usually come stock with 25/10 (and I have 22/10 on mine)
25/10 is like 27/9 on a 20"
27/10 is like 29/9 on a 20"
What would you use with the 33? Even 33/11 would be 32.5/9 on a 20"

This doesn't work.
You need to buy a spoke that is long enough that you can cut off ALL the thread and then re-thread the remainder. So in this case some 190mm+ (assuming they have a standard 9-10mm of thread).

Guys, I really CBA to cut and thread a damn ti spoke. Hence the question asking who sells the size I need!!!!!!!!
And the spokes need to be rainbow like this gay dog.

They are for my Oil Slick hubs. Probably going to lace them to an anno Purple Ody rim. Shit looks pretty tiiieeeeeet. You can fuck right the fuck off if you disagree.
Ti spokes are what they are. I laced up the A+ wheel set for a dude at work with some ti spokes and they turned out pretty awesome. He constantly talked about how awesome they felt for like the first 3 months he had them.

I potentially found some at Dan's. Not really the rainbow I was looking for but it works. They call it "Purple Haze." Still on the hunt.

I have an outer bearing seat stick in the body of my Rubens. How do I extract this fucker?
-
It is obviously pretty hard to grip and I assume it doesnt have anything you can get to behind? You can try to find a bolt that just fits in and angle it sideways (or weld something to it)' then stick it in the oven at a lowish heat 150C maybe. The aluminium body should expand significantly compared to the steel race and with luck you will be able to get it out.
:)
G.
-
Thanks dude! The bearing seat and the outer race are pretty seem less you know... I was hoping there was a wee device I could put in the inner diameter of that race that would expand against the inner circumference then compress it outwards, using wedges?
Do you think I could achieve near the same at 100 c? I don't want to clean all the grease and grip tape off these to stick in my oven.

Brakes with the lowest stack height? Go!

Probably Springfields. They have a thin washer and a button head bolt that are the only things that sit above the brake mount post. You could probably even get rid of the washer and then that would be pretty much as low as you can with a U type brake.
-
They don't clear my wishbone.
-
Oh man, didn't think of that. How close is it?
You could always take another type of brake like Flys and modify the arms to take a Sprinfield type spring and then use just a button head bolt without the spring/cap to hold the arms on.
-
Not close, the arms didn't clear by a significant amount.
I'm not looking to do a lot of jerry-rigging, I was just curious which brakes on the market are the lowest. Or are they all about the same at this point?
-
They're all pretty close at this point. What are you running right now? Might be able to use the springs and top caps off another style of brake to lower things down.
-
First-generation Flys.
-
Definitely a long shot but does anyone know what spindle length I would need for a Campagnolo C-record double chainring crankset? Pretty sure its 111 or something close to it
-
its going to depend some what on your frame & what the bb width is, but you're probably right in thinking its 111, either that; 102 or 115.
theres shittons of info on the web about old road bikes, of you look up the og specs of the frame you're putting them on you can probably find what the oe spindle length is

Converse All Stars have the lowest stack height. But Van's Old School Slip ons have a much better bite with the gum waffle sole.
You're welcome.

Antigram hubs to Aerospace rims 3X, what size spokes do I need?
-
jealous tom, jealous.
-
They're not for me, they don't come in polished. It's 180mm rear and 182mm front, if anyone wants to know. The Pijin spoke calculator got updated!
-
Oh hellll no if you think my son is going to be a BMXer. He is going to be a skateboarder. A way better retirement fund than letting him grow up to be a BMXer/Economist like all of us.
-

180mmmmmmmmmmmm my friend. Or you could do 420mm with a 69 cross.
-

A wise and noble decision. Suffering the bewilderment of almost being a skateboarder to girls is the worst.
-
Yeah sure because all BMXers smoke weed and drink beer, we're such a bad influence for the younger riders.
-
My pedal insert came loose. How do I tighten these?
-
tighten the threaded washer with a pin wrench
-
A pin wrench you say! Thanks man.
-
Intead of all this fancy shit, why couldn't you just put a nut in the back of the crank and tighten the pedal into that?
-
I need to run a 135mm hub but the frame has 130mm spacing. Its an aluminium Specialized Tricross. Will I be ok if I stretch it that extra 5mm?
-
Im going to run it SS so there will be no shifting mech to fuck up if that helps
-
Aluminium frames are generally stiffer. I don't know if I would want to risk it because you will never stretch it equally each side so the wheel will always want to run slightly off. What wheel is it?
-
Chrisking laced to an Alex EN24
-
Would a chrisking road axle fit a mtb hub?
-
get in contact with CK and see if you can convert it to 130. i wouldnt stretch an alloy frame, but thats just me
-
Spreading an aluminum frame is never a good idea. As previously mentioned, Aluminum is stiffer and will most likely crack before it stretches.
-
You could use narrower cone nuts if you can find any that fit.
-
king hubs don't use threaded cones
-
Oh i missed the part where he said it was a Chris King.
-
Does riding a road bike work out your lower back muscles a lot? I've had a slipped disc for over 2 years now and ever since I have started riding a road bike, my back hurts a lot less. If I ride the road bike all week and the bmx bike during the weekends, I have no back pain whatsoever.
-
yea when you ride the drops it does stretch out your back muscles a bit, and theres also the benefit of better core strength
-
So who the fuck makes 8" rise bars in chrome and a decent width these days? I can't find any anywhere without paying through the nose. I may have to settle for raw.
-
S&M Slams.
-
id imagine slams are pretty pricey across the pond
-
Yeah I think they're about £60 + an extra tenner if you want chrome.
-
Here you go...

-
Nice one, cheers :) I'll get em ordered!
-
get in contact with CK and see if you can convert it to 130. i wouldnt stretch an alloy frame, but thats just me
Sweet I think ill do that. Is swapping an axle hard?
-
haven't worked on any king hubs myself so i can't say, i can't imagine its very difficult tho - as long as you don't need special tools
-
Any one know if the Chromoly Shadow Raptor front hub guards will work on a profile? I love my Steel S&M Cymbal , so might try too mod the hub cones too run the front S&M guard. But just seeing if the Shadow was a direct fit.
Thanks
-
I think the Shadow front hub has a 15mm axle and Profile is 17mm, but don't quote me on that.
-

Thanks man , yeah Profile is 17mm
-
Have any of you tried the Cult Butter bars? I'm after a set of two piece with plenty of upsweep and a bit more rise.
Any opinions of them?
-
Anyone tried plastidipping on frames/forks/bars?
-
I haven't tried it, but id think that one of the problems youd run into would be the finish being too thick in the dropouts of the frame/forks
-
My wheels are white, and I don't want them to be. Will I get away with spraying them black without un-lacing the wheel? I can't be bothered to spend money/use effort. Spokes are black. Pictures of this working would be cool.
Unrelated kinda, but found a thread on vital where they are telling each other to sand the chrome off rims...
-
i think you should be fine, I've sprayed over a chrome rim on a wheel with black spokes and i thought it looked okay
-
Just don't mix finishes. Like if your spokes are matte black and you paint the rim gloss, or the other way round. It'll look real bad lol
-
does anyone have a link for a chainstay length/gear ratio chart? trying to figure out an ideal ratio for a 16.25" chain stay

Seems to work

Looking at getting a new frame. Need some advice. Looking for a short arse end, which bone cs, sort of a mix between a howler and a Tierra.
Narrowed down to:
Doom wizard
Funday
Or the colt45
Any first hand info on these frames would be rad. Or know of anyone riding these

Doom Wizard!

So I just got my taska ufree from flatland fuel, wheel looks amazing. i held it in my hands and when i spun it forward it felt really gritty and rough...but backwards was really smooth. I looked at an article about maintaining it, and found no matter how much I turned the driver anti-clockwise, it would not come off. Is this something anyone has dealed with? Or should I just email FF and see what they think? I should also mention this will be my first freecoaster....(i've been learning with a cassette the whole time!)

Hey paranoid I have the revenger prototype based on the taska hub and its the same grittyness and I have to tap the axle all the way off to get the driver out
-
Whats the difference between a challenger stem that says 'S&M RACING' and the one that says 'CHALLENGER'? Just an earlier version?
-
The racing one is thinner than the original Challenger. Uses a 1/4" allen key. The new Challenger is slim like the racing one but takes a 6mm.
-
Anyone know if the body's on the premium slim metal pedals are interchangeable with the plastics?and vice versa
-
Yes, I think so.

Yes, I think so.
good to hear!

If I'm trying to learn handplants over spines and I'm right-foot forward and spin to the left, which hand should I be using?

I guess it's preference, but I'd use my right hand to go straight over it.
-
What size bolt is the blue six brake lever bolt? What pitch? Thanks

If one was to find a 14mm homer front hub is there any easy way of converting it to 10mm? Like swap a marmoset axle and bearings over?
-
Nope would have to be a monkey axle i believe, the marmoset bearings were much smaller than homers, still massive though.
-
Damn. Any good 14mm forks with brake mounts then
-
If you fancy going custom i guess s&m would do it but you live in 'straya if i remember? Ill check some sites here for a monkey axle if you want?
Edit: http://flatlandfuel.com/odyssey7kagsportmonkeyfrontwheel.aspx
Best i could do at work sorry :/ i can drop a few phone calls tomorrow i think there is a monkey hub knocking around these parts somewhere.

Yeah I live in the land down under so custom s&m shit will be expensive as fuck. Been thinking if I can't make a 10mm axle work I'll just run a wheel for brakes and a wheel for brakeless.
I think spev was doing custom bmx shit so if I get these wheel I could get an axle made up
-
Email G for sure. Maybe you could put a different bearing in there along with a marmoset axle
-

Ah cheers hadn't thought of emailing him
-
Dont bother emailing G. You already had the correct advice. Marmoset axle isnt going to fit. That hub has been discontinued about 8 years now at a guess. Any solution is likely to need to be a custom option or trawled up off ebay... Sorry.
:)

Will those new odyssey r series forks work with a chrisking headset?
-
I don't think so, they have a built-in race.
-
So I gotta get some older dirt forks or something?
-
yep
-
If you wanted to drop the king headset (doubt it) there is the Verde neo headset with press in cups but seated for integrated bearings, I've got one on the way for my barcode.
-
sweet. let me know how it works out for you!
-
Will do, it should be with me Tuesday which gives me time to finish the restoration, refaced the BB and headset cup seats got everything nice and round again and filled in the dents, going to paint it British racing green. Super excited.
-
You can use a King headset with an integrated race. Apparently it is the wrong angle but my friend does it with no trouble and has done since I've known him.
-
Solid headset should work I think?
-
I'm almost positive you have to use the press on race that comes with the solid headset coz needle bearings
-
While it doesn't "officially" work, a King headset can usually be used with an integrated fork race.
-
I'm almost positive you have to use the press on race that comes with the solid headset coz needle bearings
The top part of the solid headset includes a tiny washer that goes between the headset bearing and the locking mechanism. It is basically a washer that slants 45 degrees towards the inside. if you have an extra one, you could put it on top of an integrated bearing race on a modern fork to replace the bottom race of a solid headset.

I'm in talks with some one about a new frame and I was wondering if any one knew the dimensions of a 30t mds with extra guard. I'm wanting a nice straight chain line. I emailed odyssey and haven't heard back from them yet.

only frame i have had that clears decently sized tires and a flipped 30t mds is a ian/2nd wave. 3rd wave probably clears em too, but not the broadcaster. soundwave might be your best bet if you want some decent tire clearance too.

I'm talking to spooky Dave at the moment. We are trying to see if he thinks he can clear it with a single or double bend back end. He doesn't have the tooling for a wishbone at the moment. He was also the first person to get back to me out of the frame builders that I know off

So I've noticed this is happening on both of my road bike tyres, some kind of thread keeps coming away round the entire tyre. They're Conti GP4000s. Is it a problem meaning they need replacing to avoid some kind of blow out? If so I'll be pissed off, cant have done more than 1000 miles on these!
-
I've had sidewall problems with conti tires before, grand prix something-or-anothers, haterskins, ultra sports. all sidewall blowouts or weird deformed casings after a few hundred miles, never noticed threads like that coming off though. but i have had it happen on other tires, no failures in those cases though
-
I just smoked a joint for the first time in months so bear with me if these doesn't make any sense.
I remember reading somewhere that the pressure equivalent of typical tarmac road surface on a hot day is about 95psi. If that is true, wouldn't it mean that running 100+psi in your tires actually increases rolling resistance from the road deforming more than the tires?
-
I've read several articles saying that 23mm tires are in fact slower than 25mm tires because the 25mm tire absorbs the shocks of the road better. Same applies to psi.
-
I've been running 90 psi in 25c tires for a while now and much prefer it to harder pressures, especially due to the current state of the roads.
Also, my Schwalbe Duranos are doing exactly the same thing Tom

Personally I wouldn't be too worried about that. The main structural casing threads run sort of helically around the tyre, that looks more like a thread from the sort of "tape" they put over the bead which isnt really structural. Probably a good idea to pump the tyre up 30% above your normal running pressure as a test, but if it survives that OK you should be fine.
Ride it at your own risk though.
:)

I just had a Conti Gator Hardshell fail in that exact place, I'll take a pic tonight.
Couldn't work it out, was a tiny nick in the tube and I couldn't see any foreign objects so popped a new tube in and it did the same 100m down the road. The tube must have bulged out slightly from the hole where the sidewall split and got pinched.
First ever puncture from these tyres in 18 months and around 3000 miles in so not too bad. might try patching up the wall as the tread is still fine, not worn much at all.
-
Hmm I think I'll start wearing a helmet on the road bike now then haha, dangerous enough as it is without the added risk of my tyre popping. I need new wheels soon anyway so I'll probably just swap the tyres at the same time.

2 quick questions cause im building up my morsecode.
front brakes yay or nay?
is 36-10 gearing too wild?

I was never a fan of my conti gator skins, rode like shit and then fell apart.
Hugh - Maybe but probs not really.
Ride it for a bit, won't kill you

Yeah fuck it 36-10 is it then!

Probably a stupid question but... you are sure that the brake isnt rubbing the tyre? Sometimes the brake can flex so much under heavy load that the pad moves up into the tyre but you cant see it in the stand...
:)
G.
-
Not sure, I'll check when I go for a ride tomorrow. Cheers!
-
Sorry guys, ruining your mtb conversation here,
Bonedeth Bomber Bars. Anybody ridden them? I'm looking at the 8.5's in particular.
How'd they feel?
-
Have t ridden the bomber but the deadman bars are the best feeling bar I have run
-
2 quick questions cause im building up my morsecode.
front brakes yay or nay?
is 36-10 gearing too wild?
If my calculations are correct, 36-10 would be 72. I was running 28-9 which is 62.2 and the "standard" 44-16 is 55. That being said, I would bump up to an eleven tooth driver or a 30t sprocket.
As far as front brakes, I would do it. I had planned to use the new Fast Pitch fork w/990 mounts on my new Barcode based on an dumb idea in my head to be different. I thought of using Pitchforks, but ended up getting Demolition Elite forks without brake mounts as I remembered I hate setting up a front 990.

Does the hub guard on a ratchet replace the collar? Like I bought a hub with a guard and nothing else. I dont need a guard. Do I need to get a collar now?
Sorry if this isnt clear.
-
yes the guard replaces the collar, so if you're not using the guard you're going to need a collar
-
Not based in the uk are you hugh?
-
Im close. Ireland.
-
Might be picking up a ratchet guard tomorrow, if I do ill send my collar out to you FOC.

Ill send you a guard if you send me the collar. Save yourself buying one.

That would be sound I really appreciate it.

Cool ill PM you now.

Anyone know chainstores in the uk that sell plastidip?

Not really a chain store as such but I think Cromwell tools have it and they have branches all over..

If it moves grease it, if it is a static thread (like pedals, wheel or stem bolts etc) then coppaslip or some other anti seize is better but grease or oil is better than nothing.
Loctite has no place on most bikes. If you need it on spokes or anything like that then you are doing it wrong. IMHO.
:)
G.

Loctite and bikes does not mix ha,although my friend flipped some rhd wobolts over ran them lhd and locitited the pedals in.

Yeah flipped cranks is the only exception.

Ha I genuinely thought locktite was needed for something. Good thing is asked here then.
-

Super stupid question now but what about where the stem clamps the steerer tube and where it clamps the bars?
-
i always grease the steerer, makes getting the stem on and off easier. never really thought to do the bar clamp tho, i usually leave that clean and dry
-
Ok cool. Final question, should I grease the seat post? It's an aluminium Thompson
-
yesss definitely grease your seat post. you don't know frustration until you have to unseize a seized seat post.
-
right ill grease it then. Thanks Admiral. Sorry about all the dumb questions but im building up a new bike and want to get everything right. Cheers
-
There are no dumb questions man. Better to ask then to assume and not grease your tubes and tires.
-
Good point. I greased my grips too cause they were tricky to get on. I'm gonna grease my brake pads next ;)
Seriously though, what brake pads are best to use with painted rims? I don't want to wear the paint off.
-
I've always used clear coat to put grips on. It dries so hard that your grip will need to be cut off when you do change them. Never heard of using grease for that. Are they slippery at all?

Depends what you want to do with them

You going to replace them? Same thing is going to happen.
Just take the pile into your local bearing stockists and have them measure it all up. The inner race is just defined by its dimensions, hopefully it will be off the shelf.
:)

Yeah I had thought of replacing them G thought it might be cheaper than buying a whole new driver.
Also thought it would be quicker to get this mess running again rather than waiting for the gcoaster or the odyssey one

I cant fault your logic on either of those. Bearings should be much cheaper than a whole driver (though I have no idea how much a new driver costs) assuming you can get everything out; and definitely quicker. Hopefully the Odyssey one Aaron is on will be out later this year but it is likely to be just in time for Xmas rather than summer.. and obviously that isnt a firm estimate just a wild guess..

I'm running a cult butter. I think it's ok. Not as quick grinding as I though it would be (on skate park ledges that are know for being slow). It seems to be lasting ok but I haven't tested it on any haggard ledges yet.
Think the cults are abit longer than the gsports too. I'd run a pleg2 in the back

Does anyone know what the maximum tire clearance is on Odyssey F-25's? I have a set of Rampera tires that I love, but the 2.35" hardly fits in my Freestyle Classic forks as-is due to it being so much larger when inflated.
-
I don't know exactly, but the R versions fit demo momentums with room to spare, and those fuckers are like 2.45" inflated on some rims. I would imagine all the new Ody forks share the same legs...
-
I mean i hawk tyres go up to 2.4 so im assuming 2.4.haha

just finished polishing my stem ,do I spray some clear coat on it or leave it
-
Clear coat it no harm done then.
-
Don't bother. It's aluminium, it'll be fine.

On the topic of rawing parts...
How would I go about rawing the springfield brakes?
I assume the spring will need to come out, is that possible.
What else do I need to do before dipping these brakes in a load of chemicals? Or even if I should?
-
So i have a tyre and the wire beading has ripped away from the tyre anyway to fix this?

strip em down to just the arms & spray/soak in oven or drain cleaner. clean em real good with white spirits afterwards so they don't oxidize so easily from the left over chemicals.

Spring unhooks easily.
Avoid getting stuff on the pivot area, it will get in the crack between brass bush and arm and spoil the fit.
The arms are die-cast like a pedal body so you may not be able to achieve a good finish without a lot of polishing.

Cheers G,
I'm finally over ruining my shoes but I hate setting up and fiddling with brakes so they seem like the perfect option.
I'm just waiting on getting a new frame from Zoidy and some time to ride the bike to try them out.

Can anyone tell me what exactly I have to do to swap an odyssey v3 cassette from a 10t driver to 13t cog?
EDIT : Nevermind its a completly new driver

No way thats an 09 fit, im on my phone but looks like a euro bb in there aswell,

looks a lot like an s2

they don't. i had bare spare nuts/bolts from when i got the whole pedals as i only run one side with pins for grindage. they're a common size and i imagine most hardware stores would have some

Would there be any reason why using this type of water-repelling coating on a frame would be a bad idea?
http://gizmodo.com/neverwet-review-the-magical-water-repelling-spray-is-812797429
Seems like a nice way to combat rust/gunk.
-
From that review:
While it's only been a few days, it seems incredibly unlikely that the coating would last through any continued wear and tear.
Also
Apparently there's a reason everything they spray down in the promotional video is white. The box claims that the coating dries to a "milky white haze," but what you really end up with is more along the lines of "someone vomited small amounts of white paint onto my belongings and left it in the sun to dry." Generally speaking. And as we already mentioned, that pre-digested milky mélange shakes off with alarming ease—from the places you actually want it to stick to, that is.
It probably wouldn't be the best on a frame or any bike part. Maybe with some more development it would be.
-
There's a number of hydrophobic coatings now days. Nissan even has one coming out.
-
What grade steel is the gsport ratchet driver made from?
-
I'm thinking about getting a new back rim and I'm wondering if I should get it in chrome for maximum stopping power. I haven't run a chrome rim in many years but back then the general consensus was that brakes worked better on chrome rims. Is that still a thing or will black rims perform just as good?
-
I switched from a chrome rim to a hard-anodized black Hazard light about a year ago and I saw zero drop in braking. Plus, the coating is seriously durable and has yet to wear away like many other colored rims I see. Odyssey got it right.

Do the graphite Ruben pedals use the same hardware (eg spindles and bearings) as the alloy ones?

Do odyssey/Sunday sprockets come with an adaptor for 22mm spindles?

I don't think so.

Mine did not.
-

No, the graphite pedals are loose ball bearing while the alloy Rubens are sealed bearing. They are totally different.
-
Ahh got it. Thanks
-
My MDS from a few years ago came with both adapters, maybe mailorder chucked one in or odyssey stopped sending both, not sure.
-
The Burlington I got came with a 19mm one only

seems like the newer bamboo (2?) need a 23mm cone wrench

What's lighter, a Profile mini with chromo 3/8" bolts or an Odyssey Antigram with the alu axle and the 3/8" bolts?

I can't decide between a black or raw sprocket. My bike is all black with silver chain and black and grey seat. Lame question I know.

Is park tool grease ok for hubs?

If not what one would be best for a coaster?

should be fine, I've used it before with no problems. grease is grease for the most part

Sweet thanks

What's lighter, a Profile mini with chromo 3/8" bolts or an Odyssey Antigram with the alu axle and the 3/8" bolts?
Not sure, it isn't easy to find the Profile weights with a specific option (last time I looked). Pretty sure the Antigram will be lighter though... it is seriously light with that set-up (12.5oz).
:)

I use automotive wheel bearing grease on my bike parts, never had a problem using it.Don't get suckered into paying for "special" Park tools bike grease.

I picked up a tube when I was building my bike so I've got it sitting here anyway. It was cheap enough though
-
I don't go through a ton of grease, so buying a tub of auto grease doesn't make much sense for me. I use the same green tube of Phil's that I've had for years.

Anyone know if the odyssey a ross tyres are any good? Never seem any run them to be honest

One of the groms I rode with had a set front and rear. And they seemed fine. I'd run one in the rear

2010 I think

Anyone else feel like pumping your tires up to 90psi + feels like running a longer chainstay compared to 60psi?
-
Yes... it takes a bit to get used to it, but when you do, higher psi feels better IMO. I mainly run high psi because KHE coasters roll SO slow, super annoying.
-
high psi is nice at smooth parks or on nice streets. i really dislike anything over 80 atmo, but i ride haggard street spots and shitty outdoor parks.. 70-75 is my sweet spot - just enough to usually not pinch flat casing and it takes some of the brunt of larger impacts.
not sure what you mean by it feeling like having long stays tho.
-
I mean during hops or manuals it feels like the wheel is further back and you have to pull up a bit harder. For spins and whatever else feels the same.

I was thinking a profile ripsaw. But that profile one peggiesmalls posted is sweet. I need profile cranks for ultimate spline drive goodness. Anyone have a pair they want to swap for fly v3s?

The bolt on my fly v3 cranks keep working its way loose. What can I do?

Loctite
-
The bolt on my fly v3 cranks keep working its way loose. What can I do?
Sprocket bolt or the main end bolt?
If sprocket bolt it may mean that you have a wonky sprocket.
If end bolt it may mean the BB spacer tube is too short or there is movement/wear in the splines.
:)
G.
-
Main end spacer. It's a fly bb. Everything is set up as it should be. And they have very little use. I'll check again today
-
What's the difference between the old (cajalla or what ever) and new (rampera) Ruben tyres other than the colour options and sizes?
-
The ramperas have a little deeper thread than the callejeras but not as deep as the campilleras (dirt version)
-
Not a fan of the current 2.35 Flys. Bring back the folding 2.25 option.
-
I remember the non folding fly rubens used to be 19euro's now every tire is at least 25euro, expensive rubber;)
-
Pretty bad considering its a Disposable ' part

How easy it to switch the ratchet from rhd to lhd is anything fidly?

It's piss easy. But get the guide from gsport and follow it. Hardest bit is the clip but if you have finger nails it comes off easy as pie

anyone out there uses s&m race xlt fork for street and trails or think they're recommended as well? I weigh 155lbs and don't huck-to-flat, only smoother trannies. I'm looking for a pair of forks that don't require a compression bolt, only need to use with a star fangled nut. cheers.

Yes perfectly fine, done even think about putting pegs on i. They may be thin but remember there s&m quality
-
.... I'm looking for a pair of forks that don't require a compression bolt, only need to use with a star fangled nut. cheers.
That's a very bizarre stipulation, is there a reason for it? Star nuts tend to be pretty crap.
Pretty sure the S&M forks all use a built in compression bolt too.
:)
G.

thanks guys, forgot to mention that I ride pegless.
haha, I ride a frame with a shorter headtube and need to cut the column short and thought normal forks are threaded at where I want to cut.

thanks guys, forgot to mention that I ride pegless.
haha, I ride a frame with a shorter headtube and need to cut the column short and thought normal forks are threaded at where I want to cut.
How short is the headtube?
The Odyssey (and Sunday) forks have the threaded section recessed and the compression bolt has a cut line so you can cut up to 20mm off without a problem (which is a lot). Not sure about other brands.
Even if you end up cutting into the threads on an Odyssey fork you could still retro fit a star nut system.
Hope this helps
:)

How long is the rear end on a Sunday Wave? I need a longer frame and could buy one of these for about $90.

From memory the first wave has a 13.75 cs

Got knocked off my road bike today. Fairly slow so nothing too bad but what should I check on my bike to make sure its still safe to ride? It's a CAAD8, think the forks are alloy steerer with carbon legs. Thankfully it looks like the only damage is the wheels slightly out of true, the guys car came off a lot worse haha. Road cleats can make quite the dent and scratch when you're trying to keep yourself upright on a car bumper.
-
good to hear to came out unscathed!
id take the fork out of the frame and have a good look around the crown/steerertube and make sure it isn't stressed looking or cracked. check the blades for any damage, as long as theres nothing that penetrates through the paint or through a few layers of carbon you should be good. check your bars & stem for cracks or damage as well
-
Friend gave a half link chain today(first one ive used) seems alright. Whats everyone's problem with them?
-
Friend gave a half link chain today(first one ive used) seems alright. Whats everyone's problem with them?
They are shite. You have a full chain of bent links that are trying to straighten themselves out everytime you crank. And we all know a bent peice of metal fatigues over a straight peice.
Also they suck dick
-
Can I run a Solid headset on a regular 1 1/8" threadless road frame?

yeah you'll be good, unless you got a weird fork

i have two sets of gold female bolts for shadow front hubs.
These;
I want to run them (pegless of course) on my female Kink Incite rearhub. It has a steel ht axle at 15mm i believe.
The original bolts have 30mm of thread.
The bolts i want to run have 20mm thread.
Will the hub be fine if i run these shorter but nicer bolts? I'm more concerned about the drive side than the non drive side, because well... the driver does nothing for the axle's integrity halfway down. But the original ones don't go that deep into the axle either.
The shorter bolt is taking about 13mm of thread. till about right under the driver's teeth.
"Let me know what you think"
No, really!
-
Profile Whippit, sexiest big sprocket ever.
i use a blackjack as an ashtray
36t though, better imo
-
Who makes the longest plastic pegs?

butchers i believe, 4.5"

Can you run spacers between the sprocket and crank arm on spline drive sprockets/cranks?
-
I don't see why not. As long as the crank bolt is tight.
-
^ correct, as it isnt bolted to the arm you have the best of both worlds. Perfect chainline and arm clearance.
-
Can you run spacers between the sprocket and crank arm on spline drive sprockets/cranks?
yup, I've seen someone do it
-
As long as you evenly space the gap that will form between the sprocket and the crank bolt hole, you will be fine. If you don't, you'll bend your sprocket by tightening your sprocket bolt.
I do want to say, those kind of questions are why i don't understand splined vs floating axle (powerbite) style systems.
With spline, everything has to be right to make and keep shit working.
Everything comes down to millimetres. There even are half millimetre spacers in case your shit doesn't align after 2 hours, cause you need to assemble and disassemble before you even know how many spacers you'll need later.
With powerbite style axles, you can have the arm halfway on there and it might not even do real damage.
I ride Kink splined cranks now, and even though i love them, i still think splines are silly. <3 floating axles
-

He's running splined so there isn't a sprocket bolt needed

Which is about 8 billion times better than trying to bodge spacers between the sprocket and the arm.
Plus, it doesnt seem like any major companies make a 'between the sprocket and crankarm' spacer that is readily available. However, it seems that could be solved by cranks using a set screw style sprocket bolt.

Anyone from here going ramp1 skatepark in Warrington this saturday?

I think I got some seized Twombolts, already hammered the shit out of them with no luck. I will try some penetrating oil and more hammering tomorrow. Help me BG.

Weird not as if its 48spline hahah.

Have the bolt a little loose and jump on the pedals a few times. If they're real stubborn maybe go do some small bunnyhops, both left foot and right foot forward. If and when they budge you may need to loosen the bolt a tiny bit more and repeat.

The major problem is that I only have the cranks mounted on frame, nothing else, so no bunny hop technique here. I will give a shot putting something like a block off wood under the bb and jump on them.
-
If you really wanna hammer them then do it downwards, not outwards.

How many spokes are in this rear wheel? I need some unbiased answers.

Didn't Carlos have a 48h Ratchet?

I have one too. Just not a white one. The 48h only came in black.

Someone please tell me they know where to find that Cory Nastazio interview after one of his runs, X-Games 2005 i believe, where he just says "Mike Jones" to the bitch interviewing him.

Pretty sure it's the khe with the cult driver

nevermind soul sisters

Yep, there was only ever a single batch of them, all black, all 9t, old shell shape, old circlip, old collars, 14mm helicoil axle instead of 3/8" or non-helicoil
-
I just got a new back wheel and chain. My sprocket is a bit worn and I was thinking about flipping it in order to prevent it causing premature wear to my chain and driver. It's always been run in the same direction so I figure this will work. Will it or am I crazy?
-
Same but I'm going to get a new sprocket as I may aswell.
So from 30-10, should I go 28 or 25/9?
Thinking 28 Sunday sabre tooth.
-
28 or 27/9 if you like how 30/10 feels.
-
36-10. Do it.
-
weird, i went into evans to order the 28t in today and turns out the dude behind the counter was a bmxer who'd just bought a sabre tooth, hasn't used it and it's still brand new. evans are out of stock so he offered me his for £20.
he texted later to say it's only a 25t but i've said i'll have it
i think this teeny gearing might be an arse on the life of the drive chain but i'm putting on a new keychain (and a new rear hub) so it should be aiii, amiright?
anyway, 25t, so 25/9, fate has forced my hand
-
Anyone know where to buy a KHE style coaster clutch? With other companies using the design I feel like these should be for sale somewhere? but can't find them. I've managed to chip some splines off of mine, though it seems to be working ok for now.
-
try contacting flatland fuel.
otherwise you'll probably have to buy the whole interal kit

Because no one is that bothered about an exact gear ratio and 10 or 9 tooth offers a lot of advantages.

Didnt odyssey make 12t one piece for their first cassettes?
I had a friend that welded a 12 t cog on a cassette driver in the day, thus making it one piece. is there technically and advantages to one piece anyway? ease of operation and lightness perhaps. Just get a standard cassette driver if you can find one.

^wish i could answer your question. i know i have looked at a couple pairs in my days.
G, if you read this, and anybody else reading this;
Back when female was 'new' the common statement was that a 10mm female axle was 'about' as strong as a 14mm hollow axle.
Note that right now i usually the rear female inner axle is 15mm.
Sadly my female Kink hub wasn't worth shit, even though a second hand Primo Mix lasted me for years, and my Vandero also never had any problems in 3 to 4 years.
Now i'm resorting to get an Antigram- mainly because of the 17mm inner/14mm female bolts option.
Even though i don't know if it was me, or that the Kink hub was just a shitty batch, i wonder if people DO actually consider the 14mm-17mm inner axle STRONGER than 14mm male axles.
-

It depends how big the hole down the middle of the hollow axle is.
A 3/8" bolted 14mm axle will be about the same strength as a 14mm axle with a 3/8" hole down the middle... but very few are that big. More like 5 or 6mm. A 14mm axle with a 6mm hole down the middle will be about 40% stronger than the 3/8" bolted version so.... There are lots of details to take into consideration though. So a typical "14mm" axle, is actually usually using 15mm bore bearings. So a well designed 15mm axle with unthreaded hardware and 3/8" female bolts can easily be a lot stronger than a typical solid 14mm axle that IS threaded for cones etc.
Once you get up to 17mm and no threads you are obviously getting many times stronger than a typical solid 14mm axle. When you go to the bigger 14mm bolts you save a lot of weight and it is still very strong, but obviously not as strong as a 3/8" bolted 17mm axle (however the bolts themselves are stronger)...
I hope this helps.
:)
G.
-
Couldn't ask for a better answer. 8)
Bottom line to me, is that the hardware that last failed me on my current hub(the axle), is stronger than the 15mm i have, and preferrably stronger than what we already had 10 years ago.
No contest, so Antigram it is.
Can't wait man. Thanks for your time and, as always, your vast knowledge G!

Whats a good torque wrench for working on bicycles?
Park are always a good shout.
-
fyi the park tools torque wrench is just a rebadged and blue painted off brand one you can get on ebay for like 1/2 the price. here in the US the craftsman wrench is the same as the park and cheaper as well but idk if you've got craftsman over the pond
-
Depends what torque you want to hit. If you want to be able to hit low values like 4Nm for stuff like carbon steerers it is best to have a low range one, (I actually just have allen keys with washers welded on the end, and pull using a digital scale, which is much cheaper and very accurate).
:)

Care to explain how you do that measuring using a digital scale. Sounds genius, but I can't quite figure out what you are doing...

1. Get cheap allen key.
2. Weld on a small extension and a washer a bit like one of those D-keys but with the washer sideways.
3. Arrange overall length so that from axis of rotation to the "eye" of the washer is 100mm.
4. Hook digital spring balance through "eye" and pull perpendicular to arm of allen key.
Resulting figure on the scale in Kgs is pretty damn close to torque in Nm.
If the scale has a "max" then all the better.
I will try to get a photo next time I am in the workshop.
:)

Nice one cheers. I think I get it now.
So... how does the length of the lever affect the readings and why have you gone for exactly 100mm?
EDIT; hang on, is that because 1nm = 10kg / cm, and having a 100mm (10cm lever) would divide the total by 10, meaning that a 1kg reading would actually be 10kg of torque / 1nm?
I think that is right...

Anybody have a lower integrated headset race that they don't need? I'll pay for shipping and throw a couple bucks.

What frames do these removable mounts fit? Came with some used brakes that I purchased, and I have no use for them.

short pull. the paul canti or stubby lever would do the trick

22.2mm is uncommon, but there a few companies that make 22mm splined sprockets for example Tree Lite Sprocket comes in 22mm.

think there will someone will ever get around to making a 22mm ti spindle?
would be pretty kick ass with those 22mm profiles

Will a Primopro cassette driver fit in a remix hub?
-
I don't even remember what the PP driver looks like, but I highly doubt it would even fit a Mix, let alone a Remix
-
Should Chrisking hubs ever be silent? The one on my DH bike has a 9 speed cassette and is completely silent. I thought maybe it just needs to be broken in but I've put well over 2000 miles on it yet nothings changed. And it bought it second hand.

so i take it the profile column crank arms arent super beefed up arms? theyre just regular profile crank arms on a larger spindle, yes?
-Columns Arm weight (for the set): 20.14 ounces/608 grams
-19mm bossless arm 175mm: 560g/19.75oz
if so, that is awesome and i think ill buy a pair. i want spline drive cranks in 22mm but i dont think i need anything super beefy, seems like this should fit the bill
and i take it that i have to buy a crank puller for the profiles, that specifically fits whatever spindle i get? ive never used 48spline
sucks that ill be retiring my weed sprocket :/
i should be able to replace my brake lever bolt, and brake bolts with aluminum bolts and be fine, what do you think
how about the two bolts on my seatpost? think i could get away with alumninum bolts on there?

I remember G saying that American made spline cranks only fit American made spline sprockets so keep that in mind.

i swapped my trusty attila stem for a brand new sunday freeze stem and now it slips on every single hop
i've re-done it every time it slipped
do i file the bars, inside the stem or both? does that work really?
and for a bonus question, there's no logo etched on the cut outs at the sides so is this a new version or is there a difference?
also, how much gap is the least you can leave inside a fork steerer tube before the threaded bit?
-
The new one has no logos on the side. It also has a square font on the faceplate. The older one had the rounded classic Sunday font. As far as I know theres no major difference.
-
The fuck do I get my driver locknut off? Sitting here with a pair of vice grips on the axle, sprayed a little wd40 on it, and tried to do sudden snaps with my wrench. The vice grips slip on the axle before that nut budges.
Trying to put a cult female axle in my mix.
-
couldnt you just knock everything out that way or is the bearing tucked behind the ratcheting ring?
-
You shouldn't be using your vice grips at all. You can bolt the hub on the outside of a dropout and use an adjustable to get the locknut off. Mix axles have a broach too..
-
My axle isn't broached and the non drive side bent and that's why I figured it stripped. Since it's stripped I can't do the suggested. I would've already done that anyways if I could've.
-
What were the seatposts that had 'SEATPOST' written on them?
-
or then had something odd written on them. I cant remember.
-

thread 2 nuts onto your axle, and then using 2 spanners (put the vice grips away) tighten them together really tightly. then you should be able to put a spanner on one of them (theyve got to be on real tight so they dont budge-the outer one should work best), and it should keep the axle tight so that you can crank the locknut loose.
also grease the threads on the axle just next to the locknut so that once it moves, its going to unscrew a bit smoother
-
Oh I put the lock nut in a vice and got a pipe wrench. I got it all with damaging the parts I needed. Just need a new cow washer as mine looks shitty from having a hub guard on it.
The cult axle for their mix version hub is the same as the remix female apparently.

About how tight is 4 nm?
I just got a Thomson stem for my big bike and I don't want to tighten it down caveman style like we do with bmx stems and end up breaking it.
-
About how tight is 4 nm?

Not tight at all. If you have an L-key Allen wrench, use it opposite of normal- stick the long side into the bolt and use the short side to turn with your hand.
-
Thanks, I'll do that. It's crazy that that's enough to hold the bars in place.
-
4Nm isnt much but its more than you could realistically do with a reversed allen key by hand.
4Nm is 4N at 1m leverage.
Measure allen key in mm (length), see how many times this goes into 1000, multiply 4N by this number. Divide by 10 to get a load in Kgf, then use a spring balance on the end of the allen key to pull with that force...
So if your allen key is 100mm long then you want 40N at the end of it, which is like 4kgs.

Sounds like it. Trim the cable down and use a knarp. https://www.danscomp.com/products-PARTS/512027/Odyssey_Knarps.html

Also, what is the bolt for that has locktite on it, it has a cable sized hole in the side, that comes with Springfields? I appreciate the answers, i'm trying to setup brakes after not having them for 10 years.

that might be the knarp. cut the cable to the right size, insert the cable in the hole, and tighten the bolt down.
-
Sounds like jeff is talking about length of straddle cable. Cutting the brake cable shorter won't help the straddle issue. Unless you shorten both ends and use knarps
-
I fixed the straddle cable issue, now i'm having a problem with the brake arms. One of them won't return when i let go of the lever. It moves easily on the post, and if i hold the other arm, then it returns easily. I'm about to throw these Springfields in the trash.
-
Post a pic of your setup. Springfields are good brakes but if your straddle cable is super crazy short they may have issues.
You ridding a CCR or the new Fit frame?

I read that part.
So your cable hanger is on the other side of the seat tube, near your tire? making the straddle cable really short.
Can you adjust the cable hanger so it pulls against the straddle cable more to the left/right (opposite to the arm that doesn't return)?

im lacing a profile ss to a hoffman rim and it says i need 185.7 mm and 186.2 mm would i be right in thinking that 186mm would be fine and not have the tops of the spoke come trough the rim?

Yeah I wouldn't worry about 0.2mm.

I just unlaced a rim then laced it back up. The outbound spokes on the drive side are ~7mm above the inbound which are snug. What the hell did I do wrong.

I've been riding a New Wave since 2008, still going strong. I ride a bit of flat on it too

3/8ths axle w.o 14mm adaptors in the rear.
that would lower my bb by fractions of an inch and be slightly better in a bowl and on trails, yes?
-
I don't think so. The centre of your axle would be at the same height regardless of axle diameter.
I think.
-
It's going to be 0.32cm lower right? How are you going to compensate for that space above the axle though?
-
The difference would be negligible, and at the risk of rooting your axle/drops
-
Would lower the BB about 1.5mm... almost certainly not noticeable except when you are working on your wheel when it will make it a nightmare...

You have to build it like a mirror, is how i would describe it. Eclat and BSD rims are like that as well. Basically, instead of starting to the left of the valve and going right, you start at the right and work to the left.

You just have to put the race from the integrated headset onto your forks and find a 20mm mid bb for your cranks. Eastern does 20mm mid bbs but can't find them on a store yet.

yeah thanks, but that only answered half my question =P
but it reminded me, that the tree one might work (still available in some stores)
the cult kinda scares me off with the square whole in the top? guess it has a hex fitting inside somewhere.
to my surprise i found an old wtp top-bolt in my old-parts-bin that fits.
still confused, if i still need the forks steer-tube "protection" insert with the race forks, or if it was for use with the elementary stem only - anybody remembers?
guess it was something about the forks steer-tube thickness that made the insert cap above the stem necessary.

What are the pros and cons of trimming dropouts on a frame?
-
What are the pros and cons of trimming dropouts on a frame?
No real cons unless you have warranty left on the frame, less chance of pinching on grinds, neater and out of the way for pegs, drop in weight (not too significant unless its an old sta500 or something) less leverage for twisting backend if you land on the drop out/
-
The range ofc is lower
But if you don't care about that then you're golden. You actually only need about 3/8" (or 1/8" if you are happy to commit to half links) as the next position after the 4th (1t = ~1/8") would be 1/2" from front of dropout slot and therefore you could just remove a link
1 tooth difference = ~1/8" difference in wheel position in dropout slot
1 half link = 2 teeth = 2/8" = 1/4"
1 full link = 4 teeth = 2 half links = 4/8" = 2/4" = 1/2"
Maybe go for 1/2" though to allow for chain 'stretch' and/or not having to slam on certain tooth quantities
-

i would also recommend a linear cable, much better. I don't know if i'm the only one, but those ghost pads didn't work very well for me. I'd get clear slim by four odyyssey pads instead. When you get your cable, marinate the inside of it with lube too.

am i right in thinking that a normal solderless nipple would work to run dual cable? dont fancy paying almost a tenna for the odyssey ones.

pitchfork xlt topcap thread size?
i picked up a solid thunderbird from the back of the bike coop
it had a challenger stem and pitchfork xlt's on it.
im assuming these are some like 10y.o xlt's
any idea what the topcap thread size is?
do you think it is the same threadsize as modern pitchfork xlt topcaps?

Yes.

anyone got one of those tiny Rocker bmx? my brother bought one for a laugh, a lot of the parts are interchangable with an actual bmx e.g. stem bars cranks seatpost etc, but the wheels are heavy as fuck... due to their peculiar shape and size i suppose
anyone got suggestions for lightning up the wheels? the rear is currently a 10mm male axle freecoaster, where the hubshell also acts as the spokes and rim a-la mag wheels
and a brief look suggests it uses a spacing wider than the bmx 110mm
