It's only for subscibed threads and only if you set it to do so in the options.

For one thing, it eliminates some of the thought that you are anonymous on the internet. The internet has caller I.D. and its not easily blocked.
Because people feel anonymous they feel they can say or do anything they want without repercussions. By doing this it cuts down on people acting stupid.
Also, eliminating free email services also keeps people who are banned, from just going and re-registering again every 5 seconds until I can really pin them down.
Bg is not the only website I have seen do this, in fact more and more are doing it daily.
