That's just the way Quentin runs them. I'm not that much of an AR guy so I'm not sure of the disadvantages, especially since its big and will allow the use of gloves easily. I personally like the way it looks.

Are there any disadvantages? I can see so if it were small and you couldn't go bigger, but not the other way around.

I personally don't see any disadvantages from it.  Although one could say if you dropped the gun and it landed on the trigger guard it might crack or break some of the lower, rather on a standard lower just crack the guard piece.  But that probably wont happen.

This is cool:

The only real downsides are that you're limiting some grip options, especially those with integrated guards (magpul), the breakage factor and inability to replace just the guard, and for me the aesthetics. I like the flat guards... I've ran plenty of M16's while wearing thick winter gloves and I never felt a need for an enlarged trigger guard. Same with the other soldiers I've talked to.
